Staying in employment struggles

Staying in employment struggles

Hello fellow forum members,

I am pretty new to this forum posting thing but I am ready to start posting.

I suffer with BPD and Anxiety and I have been struggling to stay in employment. I’m great at signing myself up to things but fully committing myself to it has always been a challenge. When I start a job I work hard and I enjoy it but it takes the smallest thing and that’s when i give up and quit. The smallest thing such as a disagreement feels like a massive deal and I take it to heart. I want to work and i want to have a future for myself but it feels out of reach. I’m not sure if I over react to situations because of my childhood trauma or if it is BPD or anxiety related but it is really starting to affect me emotionally.

any advice or techniques to rectify it would be most appreciated

Re: Staying in employment struggles

@FloraRoseworking with a mental illness can certainly have its challenges and I've found that freelancing, contracting and running my own business have provided opportunities to work closer to my own terms, so to speak. I have tried to create situations and environments I am comfortable to work in.

Being open & honest about my mental illness has made things easier too. That was hard and took some good therapy and family support to get to a point where I could talk openly about living with CPTSD.

If you can afford a psychologist then that can often be useful. I work on Internal Family Systems (IFS) with my therapist and this model suits me. To learn more about IFS there are lots of videos on YouTube and a great book "No Bad Parts" by Richard Schwartz.

Keep reaching out in these forums because there are a lot of helpful people here.

Good luck with it all.

Hi @FloraRose welcome to forums. great to have you with us here. I agree with @Boppa on wondering if you have supports to help you manage?

I have struggled with maintaining consistency with my casual employment. I have been using positive self talk, grounding techniques and using analogies to help me through.

We also have information on Mental illness & the workplace (sane.org) here.
