Welcome and getting started

New & Depression

New & Depression

Hello

First time here. Diagnosed with depression at 19 yrs (now 44 yrs). I’ve managed quite well with medication and counselling up until I lost my Dad 10 months ago and my son was diagnosed with Autism 5 months ago. My Dad would have turned 80 yesterday. I miss my Dad terribly.

I feel such a strong sense of hopelessness and I don’t want to parent my two kids anymore. My 7yo son has anxiety, autism and suspected ADHD. I suspect our 6yo daughter has anxiety as well.

I’m on meds but still feel so sad and it’s like I have nothing to look forward to.

I just can’t shake 🫨 this depression and it feels terrible. Hoping to get into a psychiatrist soon for a medication review.

Thanks for reading

Re: New & Depression

Hi @Tamarua and a warm welcome to the forum. My deepest condolences on the loss of your dad. Losing my dad was one of the hardest emotional times of my life and it took many months for me to grieve his loss. Please be gentle on yourself as there’s no time frame for grief and yes it can make life’s everyday projects such a struggle and even more so when you suffer from depression. I’m sure you love your kids but am finding it all too hard at the moment. You’ll be okay. You’ll get through this. Seeing your psychiatrist for a med evaluation sounds like a good plan and also reassures yourself that you want things to improve and in time they will. Please be gentle on yourself during this difficult time. Smile, breathe and simply go slowly. 🙏🌹

Hey @Tamarua ,

I'm so sorry to hear that things have gone downhill after the passing of your dad.

It sounds so hard being a parent while you are battling depression. Do you have supports in place who can give you some respite?

Even though it's been 10 months, grief can linger. Do you still speak to a counsellor? I'm wondering if you used Griefline before? Here is the link if you are interested. Griefline 1300 845 745  https://griefline.org.au/

Parentline might also be helpful: 13 22 89 https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents/issues/how-parentline-can-help-you
