Why I Will Vote Yes - Referendum: The Voice

Why I Will Vote Yes - Referendum: The Voice

Hi SANE Community

As you might already know, SANE as an organisation is supporting a YES vote tomorrow at the Referendum and is encouraging everyone to vote Yes on October 14 in support of the Voice to Parliament.

As a community of people with lived experiences of mental health issues, we know just how important it is to have a voice on the issues that affect us, and that's what tomorrow's referendum is all about.

A great place to start to understand what is actually being asked of you tomorrow is reading the actual referendum question, you can do that on the official Government website here: Referendum question and constitutional amendment | The Voice

If you are unsure about it, I interviewed Yes campaigner Jade recently - check out this video to learn more about the Voice, where it came from and what it means.

For me, it is very simple. We have been asked whether we agree that there should be a body, called the Voice that can make representations on the things that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is so simple, so straightforward, so aligned to my own understanding of the power of lived experience informing better solutions that Yes is such an easy answer. I hope you will join me.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcFIfMvs6YA

Why would it lead to assimilation policies?

Wait hold on I think my idea of an assimilation policy is not yours, I thought an assimilation policy was like a genocide but I think I’m wrong, maybe you need to explain what you mean

@ArraDreaming personally I don’t think there’s any risk of the Voice leading to assimilation policies - it’s the opposite of that. It’s the creation of a body called The Voice that may make representations to the parliament on issues affecting Indigenous people and the meaning of “may make” is important in the actual wording. It means it gets to choose what it makes representations on. Government can ask The Voice for advice and the Voice can make representations. There will of course be more to do on reconciliation but it’s an important step in the right direction.

I am going to have to sign off now - lots of cupcakes to make for a school P&C stall tomorrow so I think our Mod @tyme will close this thread off for the evening, thanks all for the discussions.
