I have extended family who have travelled there, but we haven't been.

It reminds me of Santorini .... cave houses ....

If you scroll back to pages 78 - 86 on this thread you will find images from Santorini, and descriptions of life there, from modern times to the islamd's ancient history.

@Former-Member Funny you should say that about the pizzas. I think that is what the connection was for me when I saw Faith's Furnaces. I had the best Turkish pizza out of the ones they reminded me of. A lift we got in Turkey took us a long way out of his way to buy us what he considered the best Turkish pizza. And omg it was.

Myself and the guy I was with could only look at each other and say "OMG". It was just a tiny village. One little shop with a heap of men playing backgammon out the front of it but wow!

I have no idea how they made it taste like they did. I'd say the furnace had a huge part in it. it was so simple, it looked so plain, but whatever the spices they used on it - and the texture.. it was just out of this world. 👍🏼

In Greece they use Barley flour in the base, if its traditional ....its whole meal but looks and taste like an amazing white flour dough ....

Also their olive oil used in cooking has a different, a-may-zing flavour .... and their oregano is more a wild marjoram than what we have here .....

Sadly where I was nobody could speak English and I could only speak about 6 words of Turkish so I couldn't find out what was in mine @Faith-and-Hope. 😞 But I sure do remember it! 🙂 I would imagine it would be akin to what you are saying.

All I know is, yes it was AMAZING... literally made the two of us speechless and that in itself was almost miraculous because some would say it couldn't be done. Never had a pizza that's come close to doing that before.. 😛

I think I'm going to have to go to the shop and buy ingredients for pizza. 😀

I haven't made them for ages. Used to buy wholemeal pita bread and add bbq sauce and toppings.
