What happens (as a male) after you leave a DV situation?

What happens (as a male) after you leave a DV situation?

There seems to be a gap in support networks for what happens after men leave a DV situation, mainly around where you can go. There aren't any shelter type accommodation services for men, at least where I live. The majority of my income goes to the mortgage, so until the house is sold, or whatever happens, I will not have money for rent. Staying with friends and family is not an option for me (don't really have any).

Right now I am looking at living in the car (after winter ends), but I am worried about how that will impact my work (no sleep, no showers, no iron, etc).

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? What did you do?

There are many holes in our social services, it seems, @Jlol, and we don't realize until we are in need. Try googling support services in areas around you, local councils might be able to help... I hope someone will point you in the right direction.

@Jlol Try contacting 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). They are the best organisation to help in these situations. They can not only provide help with talking through what is happening for you but also have a breadth of other places you can go for help.

As @Historylover has said - there is such a massive gap in services for people just like you - and still so much stigma around DV for men ...but you deserve just as much help and support as anyone else and I hope you find it.

@Jlol Am so sorry about your situation 😞

In my area in Melbourne there's a housing advocacy organisation. I'm not recommending it as we're not allowed to suggest specific service names, but can you google "housing advocacy" and your local area?

Good luck finding support and housing...sending wishes that you won't be homeless, @Jlol ... 🤞

@Jlol, how did you go with your enquiries re accommodation? There is also Red Cross, Salvation Army and perhaps Centrelink could also advise.

Hi @Historylover,

No luck with accommodation. Currently looking at the car as the most realistic option.

That's tough, @Jlol. I hope a better option turns up for you.
