Life's dice are clearly loaded

Life's dice are clearly loaded

I almost don't even know what to say. As you know, I have struggled with wanting to 'go' for several years, but with only one life to live, I tried to fill it with the things I wanted to achieve. Yesterday, I learned something which is probably imminent, and it will make my life a draining sink. I have no way to fix this situation and things were already serious. I don't want to talk about it in the hope that not doing so will delay it, but in the meantime, it's making me feel that I'm not even allowed a little peace.

I can't take people or the miserable life allowed me anymore. If I make changes, I will regret them, so I plod on watching everyone watching me, waiting...

'Life' is a misleading word.

Still safe.

Thats is great news @Historylover

My suggestions would ... be super slow if you are doing it hands together, but faster more flowing separate .... so do a couple runs separate with each hand and then about 4 times slower together.

Dont make it the only thing... learn tunes with RH and some chords with LH. Separate and together and enjoy it. When it drives you nuts try another tune. Keep mind alive with it rather than take on too technical tasks.

Mmmm, @Appleblossom, I have been going super slow as I don't want to rush into habitual errors, but it all gets so repetitive. Anyway, considering that it is mostly new to me, I think two-handed C scale on my first day was acceptable. I've moved on to D scale too, for variety. I wonder how long until it becomes error free after repeated runs. I've been thinking that I will give up before I achieve any level of acceptable (to me) progress. It's difficult to maintain my spirits when dealing with so much else, but I'll see where it takes me.

How do I learn the technique for correct finger use beyond scales?

Super @Historylover Hands together C first day is great. Give yourself a break HL. Its not just an intellectual skill, it is physical. Yes scales are famous for being tedious.

Best approach is a little bit each day ... run through scales a couple times each practise ... should only be warm up ... then get to real music.

Fingering is often written in music.

Can be worth it to buy a basic adult method book ... I have heaps so not going to tell you what to get... see what appeals. They good ones will have a key ... to all the scales at the back. A page of 12 major and 12 minor. each one increases in sharps or flats. Leave it as a reference when you need but go straight on to playing tunes... then you have to read ... the intervals and rhythms. Scales are def not everything, and if it kills your interest, leave it a while and go back later. Sounds like you can prob memorise C G D A major ... within the month,

and then add in A minor so you get the feel for the minors.. They are beautiful.

There are hundreds of pieces you can play with a few scales.

More important than speed and 2 hands atm is getting the chords ... which are 1st 3 rd 5 th notes in scale.

So include broken chord and then a blocked chord SEPARATELY as you learn each scale ...I have taught to Amus ... and walla ... you are on your way.

If you want a challenge ... Give yourself a year to learn all 24... but it is really more important to do real music... honestly ... even for high standards.@

In that link they say there are 15 scales ... but in acoustical space there are only 12. I would never introduce it as 15 ... cos it introduces unnecessary complication of Enharmonics ... which are just 3 scales that can written using flats or sharps ... Just have FUN @Historylover

It would be fine if you had not learned all the scales for a couple of years... for kids we stretch it out to 7-8 years. Adults have better intellectual capacity to grasp complexity .. but need to be patient re acquiring dexterity.

So much to learn, @Appleblossom. I'm having fun learning the scales at the moment, and although it is tedious, it is loosening up movements that my fingers are not used to. I learn one, do the next, go back and do both, learn another... It's working for me so far. I move between computer and keyboard and have bought a book to paste in items of interest, but I guess a proper book would be best. It is tedious, but I tried a tune and found that I am not able to do both treble and bass—that will take quite a while and I'd rather wait until I am not such a newbie. Day 3 and it's still fun. Terminology is another aspect to learn. 😟 Still trying to stop some fingers from excusing themselves from their turn.

Too early yet for tunes, @Appleblossom. I'm just plodding along trying not to incorporate (too many) bad habits that will be hard to break later.

I have real problems with fingers. @Appleblossom. Some days they just do their own thing. One day I can use (not play) chopsticks, the next day I can't. Perhaps the exercise will do them good. I think the whole learning exercise will also force me to use my memory which is one of my lifelong bugbears. It's got to be good for me. I'll get a proper book next week. In the meantime, I am getting a better feel for which book/s will suit me.

Hope you're having a pleasant weekend.
