Welcome and getting started

BPD and unemployment

BPD and unemployment

Hello 👋

I am glad I found this space, I like talking with people and hearing your experiences.

I have BPD, I get very low and have manic and dissociative episodes that quickly turn to panic attacks and then plateau back to high functioning depression.

I was let go from my previous work for unjust cause and without work I find it very difficult to do, well anything.

How do you all feel with or without work? I have a lot of hobbies but work gives me a sense of purpose (stupid capitalism, lol)

hi @Nidbina

like you i have BPD and suffer those highs and lows you described quite often.

can i ask why you were let go from work? if it was unjust and unfair dissmissal then there are steps you can take for that.

Would you consider finding another job or even volunteer work?

Do you have supports in place to help you manage your mental health so that you can be as stable as possible to be able to work?

Re: BPD and unemployment

Hi @outlander 👋

Thanks for your response.

I was on probation, and there were two men in the C suite who didn't like me but the people I worked with every day (almost 100) were very shocked to see me go very suddenly

I was told I was combative and intimating, but also too emotional and overly sensitive which I took on my chin and asked for more information and feedback to improve to which they said, they just didn't like me.

It was a company strategy to remove my position as it has not been advertised or filled since.

I'm a highly empathetic and analytical worker and have very strong support networks in place with my doctor, psych and partner. I've been admitted before, though I don't remember, unfortunately these things just happen but nothing has ever happened while I've been at work because I am very aware of my early warning signs.

On probation however, you cannot submit for unfair dismissal. It's just a series of unfortunate events. I just have to keep my chin up until I find the next thing

Re: BPD and unemployment

It's nice to find another like minded BPD person 😃💪

For over a decade I was a working musician but was also diagnosed with tendonitis and because I have endometriosis, hospitality is also difficult

I was a TAFE educator but did that through the pandemic so that kind of killed it for me

I then found production using Agile and Lean principles and am really passionate about it. So I'm looking for project coordinator and production roles. But it's hard with such a bit education and arts background

Hbu?

Re: BPD and unemployment

Hey @Nidbina ,

I've had BPD for over 20 years now. One thing I am grateful for is that I was never out of work. Why? because, like you said, it gave me some sort of structure, routine and predictability in life.

I am glad to hear you have some interests you can engage in. I'm sorry to hear you have been let go from your previous job.

At the same time, are you interested in looking for another job?

I also agree with you that a lot of people with BPD are very empathetic and feel strongly.

It's so great to connect with you. Hope you hear from you soon.

Re: BPD and unemployment

Hey @outlander and @tyme

Great to being having a group discussion 😃

I worked in the games industry space and now looking to work in a more meaningful field.

I did volunteer work with the International Women's Development Agency when I was younger, and passionate about creating safer and more inclusive work spaces

Agile and Scrum is a framework for production practise that is incredibly fascinating. If you are looking to facilitate and coordinate groups I highly recommend looking into the AGILE PRINCIPAL, it's all about people, processes then tools as the order for accountable and collaborative workflows. I think that's what makes sense to a lot of us who are constantly reflecting on our thinking styles and the way we interact with the world. We are very analytical of ourselves, so how we can help others engage makes sense to us. 😃
