My recovery journey

My recovery journey

Hello everyone 👋 I hope it's okay if I post my thoughts and musings here as a kind of diary. But anybody is more than welcome to comment here if they want!

I was in hospital last year with psychosis and I have a background of depression and anxiety. So, I am trying to recover from my hospitalization while dealing with these conditions, and with the ups and downs of life as well of course.

My first 'update' is that I had a job interview today. It was for a job that I applied for before my mental health 'team' (so to say) advised me to slow down on the job search and focus on my well-being and personal recovery for a few months. I decided to go through with the interview anyway for some experience and also because part of me still really wants the job. I find it hard to accept that I shouldn't be looking for a job. A lot of negative thoughts crop up about it - how will this gap look to future employers? What if this job was the perfect job for me and I'll never find another one? How will people judge me for being unemployed? Will money from centrelink be enough?

As for the interview, it went better than expected! So, it was a success in terms of a behaviour experiment (has anybody tried those for their anxiety?). However, they asked me to give two referees. I know this is standard for applying for jobs but I can only think of one person who would be suitable. I feel like such a loser for not having more experience and so anxious because I don't want to contact people who barely remember me and might reject the request. Even the thought of asking the one person who knows me well enough makes me anxious. It's so hard not to beat myself up for struggling with this stuff, but I'm trying to be kind to myself.

Thanks @Appleblossom I cannot support your comment but in spirit I do haha. I have been up to a lot! I moved towns, got a new job, got a boyfriend and made new friends. I've been trying to get started on my hobbies as well.

@june23 that is so many good things, a real turn around.

@Appleblossom

I support students with their academic skills. It’s a remote job, which suits me. I find a lot of fulfilment out of using my skills to help others. I enjoy it a lot.

Hobbies I want to explore are learning to craft and reading and writing.

😁

Re: My recovery journey

It sounds like a great job @june23 I like the energy of young people.

I am pretty bookish but not so crafty. I used to sew, but mostly it comes out in my garden these days.

Any particular crafts?

Re: My recovery journey

I would love to learn to sew @Appleblossom but I have been procrastinating a lot. It is hard to find the time. I also want to do some basic scrap-booking and also working with felt. I think that would be fun 😄 I wish I was a gardener! It looks calming

We all did 2 years of sewing at school then I moved over to maths and science. My mother also had me sewing clothes to sell when I was young. @june23 These days clothes are much cheaper, but I made a tailored, lined suit and bridesmaid dresses for my girls and lots of lined curtains, etc etc. my eye are not good enough to thread needles, but I did a batch of mending recently,

I only got into gardening from 40 plus… lil ole laydee interest…lol… also to keep active.

it’s good to have a few interests.

Re: My recovery journey

Oh wow @Appleblossom that’s interesting. I want to make clothes eventually.

Gardening is a fantastic interest. What kind of gardening do you do?

Re: My recovery journey

Practical, drought tolerant, some vegetables. I had fruit trees but my place is really small. @june23 I also did guerilla gardening, greening up areas in my community, including my physio, some open spaces and my court and verges. I have back and neck condition. It was a good way to keep moving and functional and take in vitamin d and sunshine. I was upset by too much use of roundup when simple plants and mulch was easy, cheap and better for the environment.
