Something’s not right

Fear of being judged.

Fear of being judged.

I had a weird start to the morning.

I had cash and I went to buy some coffee. The barista said “umm, it’s $5.50, but I don’t have any silver coins. Can you pay by card?” I said “hang on, I’ll go to the Woolworths across the road and ask for coins.” I got there and they said “this is a Woolworths Metro, we don’t hold cash. You can pay with cash but it goes in and out through a machine.” I went back to the barista and they said “we’ll make it $5, it’s fine.”

I mean who doesn’t have silver coins, but I like that it was resolved LOL?

I can’t wait until I get paid.

Until I get paid, my Mum has been giving me some money every week, for coffee and food at work. I live with my family, so groceries and stuff are taken care of, with money that comes from my Dad and brother as well.

I ran out of money on Wednesday. I didn’t eat lunch or have coffee on Thursday. I asked my brother if he had any money, and he passed the word on to my Mum.

My Mum said “how many times have I told you? If something happens, don’t hide it. No-one’s going to judge you. Say ‘Mum, I ran out of money’, so what?”

When I had a breakdown last month, the same thing happened. I got drunk.

Instead of saying that I was drunk, I ran from home, because I was embarrassed.

I was drinking because I lost my job. I didn’t tell them that I lost my job, because I was embarrassed at that too, even though it wasn’t my fault.

When I was a kid, I went to the Easter Show. If you can picture it, I was standing next to the line for the bumper cars, which were obviously under cover. It started raining. Instead of asking someone to move over so I could get under cover, I stood there until my family looked back to see where I was and saw me, SOAKING wet. They tell that story all the time, like “why wouldn’t you say ‘excuse me, can you make some room.’”

I have had severe left side chest pain and not said anything. It took that for me to CONSIDER going to the hospital. I […] hate cannulas. Almost every time you go to Emergency, they have to put one in case you die and they don’t have time to find a vein. Not to mention, most of the time it’s not a heart attack. Like you could be in the worst pain of your life and the doctor will say “the X-rays look normal, it’s just bruising.”

This sort of thing is funny, but it’s not funny. How do you become more comfortable with being 100% honest about what’s going on?

Re: Fear of being judged.

Hi @florencefifty

Thank you for your post and now l know what a cannula is thanks to you and Google.

Good story.

Your question seems to be

How do you become more comfortable with being 100% honest about what’s going on?

This is my opinion only.

100% Honest.

Not many people really want to hear 100% of anothers issues.

A lot of us have ways to deal with Cold Callers. At one stage when l could be bothered, a saled call would come in with "how are you today?" So l said, bit of a headache, sore feet, hands are a bit strange, arms are fine..... Caller tried to stop me. I said "you asked me how I am" They did not want me to be honest.

In Australia we often say "G'day. How are you?" We do not want them to answer us.

And another example of 100% honesty. If someone you know spends an hour getting ready to go somewhere, comes out all smily and says "how do l look?"

What scale up to 100% would you be honest. Tough call.

So l say 100% is a high ambition. Keep some privacy to yourself.

I agree @Former-Member

We need to maintain our privacy most of the time in society - the conversation often runs

G'Day - How are you?

Okay - and you?

Okay.

And that's the social norm most of the time - but I have a story - of course - when do I not have a story?

I had a professor when I was at university - he was a dapper and polite little German - we all liked him.

He told us when he first came to Australia he was puzzled why people lied so much - when asked how they were they would say "Okay" when they were obviously not - and yep - that's what we say a lot of the time -

He went back to Germany for a holiday and when he returned he was so glad people didn't respond honestly to "G''day" - at home if he asked he would get a litany of misery - and he let us know - I won't repeat it.the

So yes - we are not meant to go on with our woes socially - unless it's important - if we have chest pain or feel our labour has begun -

This is the way it is - personally - I hate being told to "Have a good day" - why - because I feel as it it's an order and I might be feeling really crappy - Sometimes I say I have other plans - anyway -

Now I say : :"All the best" - and this seems to be catching on.

Your write well @Former-Member333 - you are a good supporter

@florencefifty

I hear you - but don't worry about being judged - in my opinion - people are not judging each other - they are too busy with their own thoughts.

But silly to stand in the rain when there is cover - people will move aside to let someone else in - I guess you were a kid then and now you know better.

Don't worry what people think - it's not your problem - you will be okay - you are young yet I think - I can assure you as you get older - you will worry less about such things

I do wish you the best

Hi @Owlunar

I agree we need to keep our privacy.

Some people are nasty with a little bit of information.

I am not sure why some people feel compelled to tell others everything.

Risky move. Random others do not really care and we end up vulnerable.

I like your input @Owlunar in the forums

Re: Fear of being judged.

Hi @florencefifty and @Former-Member , @Owlunar

I truly get what you said about that Easter, I'm wired the same (bummer, isn't it?).

@Owlunar.... that almost sounds like a "get over it" type of comment, but as I said, I am wired a bit like Florence.

Maybe one day I will be old enough that I become less sensitive, but it's taking heaps of counselling and learning about "me" to do that.

True, "how are you?" in Aus is just a casual greeting, not a question. The few times people have said "are you okay?" I'm guessing in reference to the RUOK thing, I feel uncomfortable, like the person is partly feeling obligated because of the ads, and partly because it's my business and I might not like to share.

There are plenty of reasons explained in this thread of the wisdom in being cautious with whom one shares. lol. At least on here it is safe.

Anyway, @florencefifty , as Dr Seuss wrote : "Be who you are and say what you mean. Because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind!"

In a nutshell, build your self-confidence and self-esteem. You are okay as you are . Okay?
hugs

Hi @florencefifty and @Former-Member , @Owlunar

Hi Owlunar, my take on people compelled to say everything.

I think it is when a person is really at a low ebb, the bubble can burst with a kind word. That is one reason. I've witnessed that first hand.

There are also people who, for whatever reason, need to 'talk' and they appear to lack the ability to know when it is appropriate/safe/warranted for example.
Yes, I have also witnessed this first hand.

Sometimes, it might be sheer loneliness and the desperation of needing someone to listen.
I'm thinking I have also witnessed / witnessing this.

Re: Fear of being judged.

Hi @florencefifty

First of all, thank you for sharing all his here despite your fear of judgement. It's not easy - how awesome is it to have this anonymous space sometimes 🙂

Secondly, I relate to this to some extent. The bits I picked up are the fear of judgement triggers up especially around anything to do with "asking for help" - is this somewhat true? And could there be some hesitation around why would people help me even if I shared? Or an assumption that ppl will not help me even if they know... Or ppl don't care. Something like that?

Because awareness is th first step as it allows us to catch that pattern when it repeats.. then we can challenge those thoughts and go hang on, is it really true? I've some ppl who care so it's not everyone..

But it feels vulnerable asking for help as maybe it reflects poorly on me etc... Again, challenging that thought going, does it really though? Would I judge a mate asking for help if they were in my situation etc...

A big hug and tons of compassion for the part of you that's learning to ask and receive help. A lot of us are in thr same boat - take care..
