Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety

Hi Everyone, I’m just looking for advice on how to deal with social anxiety and in particular blushing, I feel like when I have to do public speaking or meet someone outside of the regular surrounding ie work colleague in supermarket I suffer from intense blushing, or if I meet someone who I believe is more well liked/popular. It can really get me down but I can’t seem to control it

Re: Social Anxiety

Oh I suffer with this too @Heretosayhi and it’s absolutely horrible. In any kind of social setting with more than one person I blush so badly. I am very aware of it also.

Hi @Heretosayhi ,

Welcome to the forums and thank you for sharing what has been happening for you.

It sounds so hard and stressful to recognise the blushing, particularly in social situations.

In terms of general anxiety, have you worked with anyone who may give you some strategies? One I can think of off the top of my head that works to well for me is deep breathing. I take deep breaths prior stepping into the situation.

It may seem like everyone can see me doing it, but really, it's barely noticeable.

So, have you tried anything that has worked in the past?

Re: Social Anxiety

I have had this problem. Most people are really nice about it though. Lots of people understand anxiety. More then you would think. Even those that have never experienced it.

I think it's a good way to judge if a person is a good one for you to be interacting with. Those that pay no attention to it and act normal, are likely someone who will understand you and be good to be around in the future. Especially if they go out of their way to make you feel less self conscious by taking over the conversation or bringing away the attention from you.

There is no way I know of to stop blushing, but you can step out of the situation for a break if you need to. I used to go to the bathroom. Washing my hands or face with some cold water can help. The break can calm down the intense moment. I would also go for a walk outside if possible. The open space would help calm me at times.
