I don't know what to do...

I don't know what to do...

There's someone in my life, that's family which has hurt me for too long. She's my older sister. This is going to be a bit long, but I guess I'm just really upset now and I need some input on the whole thing. It's as if I've taken a step back from this situation, and attempting to evaluate it for what it is at the moment. I'm trying to find meaning, and learn from it. At this point in time, ultimately I want to come to the decision. Should I keep this person in my life? Or cut them out completely... for they may be detrimental to my own growth as a person.

She's just a nasty person. She treats me badly. Calls me many things, has petty jabs at me whenever she can. Whether it has to do with my appearance, my intelligence, my lack of friends, my never having a relationship. The situation is that I live with her, and her daughter with my parents and uncle. I'm a University student, at that age of fragility I suppose where you're attempting to find your identity. She, is about a decade or so older than me. She had a break-down earlier this year after splitting from a ten year relationship, and went on a spree of having intercourse with random guys she'd meet on the internet. She fell hard for one of them, and was on the verge of suicide. I had to act as her confidante for an entire year, attempting to coax her out of doing so. She was on the floor, a writhing mess. She wanted to end herself, but I comforted her out of it. From then on, I continued listening to her complaining about life. How she hated people out of just the way they looked, as if they were lesser beings due to being 'ugly'. How her friends were all 'fake and stupid bitches'. I just had to sit there and nod my head. When it came to conversation with her it was always one-sided. Whenever I seeked comfort or someone to confide in when things got tough, she'd ignore me completely. Not on purpose- no. It was if she lacked the very facility to comfort anyone sincerely. She wouldn't say anything, she'd just look away as if I didn't say a word. The lights were on her, always. She'd immidately turn the conversation back onto herself, and I'd have to forget about my pains and struggles. She was more important. She'd do me favors, I'd appreciate it. Such as spotting me lunch and such. Looking back however, I felt as if I was her pet. If I didn't obey any of her rules, she'd be quick to shout 'After all I've done for you'. Every move I made was used against me.

Out of being her confidante for an entire year, I saw her from a different perspective. Who she truly was. I went from admiring her, to loathing her. It dawned on me, after her brief explosion towards me, some nights ago that: "This woman hates me, and she will never see me differently."

I don't know why though. I never did anything... she just hates me. She just hates me.

She called me a number of things, which perplexed me. Saying I was immature, spoilt, ingrateful, and that I thought I ran the household. I don't, not one bit. It just confuses me. Where an earth would something like this come from? I like to pretend it doesn't hurt me, like it doesn't effect me. Like I have strength in me. But that's not true. It does hurt me. It does. I cry in the bathroom because I can't let her see this, because if she sees this... she feels empowered. She'll prance around the house, her croaky voice booming all through-out... happy with much gaiety and lightness in her voice. It's a victory in her eyes. Me, I've always been seen as a useless idiot. She always calls me: weak, gutless, useless, stupid regardless of my achievements. I observed in public she became someone else entirely different. She'd wear these 'masks' out in public, becoming the sweetest and most saccharine person you'd ever meet. On the phone, she was someone else. Then when she'd come back to the household, she'd turn into a venemous viper. Spitting venom about everyone and anyone she'd observe on social media or the T.V. Rarely she'd talk about their abilities, always she'd nit pick their looks. She always had this complex in her, whenever someone went wrong, it was everyone elses' fault. She was the victim. Never can she take responsibility. Her daughter, for one. She never raised, and still doesn't pay her so much attention. It makes me sad. Even when she does pay her attention, it feels unatural and mechanical the way she does it. As if it's rehearsed from what the 'ideal mother is'. It's brief too. When she's done doing those fake queues to quash her guilt, she goes back to herself.

She was insecure about her looks, how she's 'old', how she can't have anymore kids, how she's not in a relationship. Yet, it's funny. She projects all of the very same bullshit onto me. She says I'm a spinster, I'm ugly, I'm fat, I'm probably a lesbian, and that I'll never find anyone. I've noticed also, she has this need to prove me wrong on everything and anything. It doesn't matter what it is.

Her last explosion, I suppose came from jealousy. The middle sister. Her and I have been hanging out with one another frequently. I never pushed her to invite me anywhere, but she did so willingly whilst the older sister wasn't. I was told I was more mellow company in comparison. This made her distant towards me, the older sister, and she began treating me differently. She started doing odd things, like smothering the middle sister and raising her voice loudly in the room so that all attention was on her, it as if she was saying 'Oh my god, look at me, I'm so interesting!' After that explosion, on her part, she knew she did wrong in the eyes of everyone of the household. She is now currently trying to act overtly kinder than usual to everyone. I accepted her apology, but whilst doing so I whinced at her. She noticed. For I suppose, for once I saw through her. I spent a whole year, listening to her prattle on about her issues. She was vulnerable towards me. I know her secrets, yet I don't exploit them as she does with mine. Genuinely, I wanted her to be okay. I wanted to help her. But I can't anymore. I just can't.

It's not really the words that hurt me. It's how she says them. She insults with such fire, such hate, and such venom in her voice. As if she contempts your very existence. As if she is disgusted of you. I don't wish to destroy her, or 'cause her any harm. I know she will do that herself. She will destroy herself. I know she will. Her life seems to have this vicious cycle. When that happens though, I don't want to be there. For she is attempting to destroy me.

I just, I don't know. What can I make of this situation. Why does she hate me so much? This isn't a new thing. She's hated me ever since I was six years old. I have a terrible memory of her then I don't want to bring up- I just want to know. What would you do if you were in this situation? I am at a turning point in my life where I've said I won't be like everyone else, shrugging off her behavior. I want to grow as a person. I want to be the best version of myself possible. I just don't think I can be, if I keep forgiving her.

@Former-Member

You are absolutely right. My parents won't let me leave, however... and I've got so much stuff- I know I'm making excuses. I know. I can't just up and leave my parents. They know what she's like, but they put up with her behavior just like I do. They need help paying the rent for the house, seeing as they're pensioners so I can't just up and leave like that. Not yet, anyway. It would sever our relationship, in two ways. I promised them I'd help them out until we both agreed I was ready, and two, my sister would use that as proof that I'm not good, yadda-yadda-yadda... and poison my parents against me.

There will be a time when I'm ready to move out, it may be sooner seeing as everyone here, including yourself has given me this possibility to think about. The possibility of moving out for me, with all your assurances has somewhat made think it is the best choice. I know there will be bad days, and there will be days I will be vulnerable. I think however, it won't do me much harm. I can't win her over, I know that. She already hated me from when I was born, I can tell as that much. It doesn't hurt me anymore, I'm in the process of accepting it. If I can see through her, and put up with her... moving out into the real world, and the struggles it presents, whatever they may be won't seem so bad. It will prepare me.

For me, what helps me escape is art. If I can draw for hours and hours, just absorbed in the very act of it. It takes me away to another place. Another place that she doesn't seem to understand, and for that reason she has no comment on.

Right now, she's keeping her distance after my standing up to her. But I know, that won't be long.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Thanks @utopia

She will keep up with her behavior, I know she will. She's a Narcissist. Whether or not she respects me after me standing up to her, I don't really care. I'm not letting her back into my heart anymore. She may be in my life at the moment, but back into my heart and thoughts? No. When I move out, I don't want anything to do with her anymore. I will cut ties with her completely.

Thanks, Utopia. I will try sticking to my guns. I won't change, for her. I have decided, her being the narcissist she is. It is best I ignore her. They feed on any feedback, negative or positive. I noticed me and my sister acted as her supplies. I was the empathetic one, whilst my other sister was the back-up. Even my other sister has voiced her annoyance over her dependancy on her. Almost cloying. For years I had always seen her as 'strong', and someone I admired. Now I see her, for what she truly is. A poisonous narcissist. Should I try and understand her better? Should I ask why she's like this? Nah. Some people are just assholes, and she's one of them.

All of the methods you guys have suggested on here, such as ignoring her, or walking out of the room. I have adopted. Knowing her weaknesses, she hates being alone. She hates it. Even if you're someone she hates dearly (me), your presence energizes her either way. If I can cut the supply off by getting the courage to walk out of the room, then I've really learnt something.

OK it's good that your parents realise the problem is your sister's, doing as my case has always been with my mother to blame me to escape reality. Its good you have your art to escape to as I have learnt that we need to be able to "switch off" in these circumstances for our mental health. There will be bad days, and these are tough as I said you only need one bad moment to change things for a lifetime and the repercussions can last a lifetime.

Hi @Wolfies I am so proud of you. Go you. I learned some really juicy info on narcissists. They will move on very quickly from people who engage in J A D E . She will become desperate with you when she realises she wont get a rise with you and find some other soul to get her energy from. They really are self destructive, but also there are enough unknowing people who are not aware of narcisism, so narcs will always find someone to feed from their energy.

At the moment you are standing your boundary which is terrific. She also may not let up on you because any interaction, chaos drama is all good for her, though it does not look like it, on the surface, she will be satisfied and it may tire you out. It did me.

I once saw an expression on my sisters face, when she was in some really dire, stressful anguish. I was talking with her, expressing my stress and concern and she was actually gleeful and smiling in a really bad situation. I new then this was not healthy

J- Dont justify

A- Dont argue

D- Dont defend

E- Dont explain

When we get into all this, it is just fodder for Narcisissts, and you will be exhausted.

One thing you could do is let her know you are onto her, and you are out of the fog.

She will give you peace.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Well done, @Wolfies, for standing up to your sister! Good for you!

I agree with @Dark_Olena, that once your sister sees that she can't get to you anymore, then she will quickly find someone else to prey upon.

And no, I don't think you should 'try and understand her better'. I think you have a very good understanding of her already. She needs professional help... not relatives who are willing to enable her.

She had got away with her immaturity and abuse for far too long, in my opinion.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Thank-you, @Dark_Olena

I noticed she did that. Moved on quickly. She seems to be investing her time into my other sister and the people around my house as much as she can. Now that I'm not there to reassure her, or compliment her stupid selfies... she's spinning. I've been reading up on a lot of information about Narcissists, and it's pretty damn mind-boggling that she fits the descriptions like a glove. I suppose she hates me, and always will... but you know? It's not my fault, or my problem. I'd say her hatred now stems, for good from me seeing through her BS and knowing what she truly is. After my standing up to her, it feels as if she's clinging to her fake mask more than ever. I peeled away that layer after standing up to her, and now I know... she's out looking for revenge, or the moment she will be on top again. Where she will have the power, and I will be vulnerable again. Now knowing the rules of her game, I know what to do.

What made me well aware of her narcissism is her constant gas-lighting of myself and others. She did that constantly to me and I never even knew it. It's scary to find out those you grow up with, and those you love(d) are monsters.

These days, it's quite easy adopting the tactic of pretending she's not there. This enrages her immensely. I know it does. She'd raise her voice higher, and talk about certain things/ brag about them in an attempt to make me jealous. I don't have it though, I just pretend she's a ghost in the house as funny as that sounds. One that can manipulate surroundings, but one you'd generally ignore/ can't see. For my sister, she too enjoys the fall and pain of others. I suppose I can't feel anything else for her, except pity. She truly is suffering, and is attempting to fill an empty void deep within her in petty ways.

I'd say she already knows I'm onto her. For the longest time, she's always assumed I was onto her. That's why she's hated me from the very beginning. Now she knows. I'll employ J-A-D-E with glee, thank-you Olena.

🙂

Re: I don't know what to do...

Thanks for the advice, @Sahara

I have tried for years to know why she's the way she is. For years, I always assumed it was me that was the problem. That it was my fault.

Hahaha, nah. Not anymore. She won't get help, I don't think... being the narcissist she is, she'll, never admit to having a problem. She'll never admit to being 'broken', or 'flawed'. But she is, we all are. Including myself. I'm starting not to mind it. It's not bad at all.

She has gotten away with it for a long time, and I'm pretty damn sure she'll never be able to learn the error of her ways. She's had moments where people have pointed out her general shittiness, and she's waved it off. The whole world is the problem, not her... No one ever understood her. She was always so 'special'. She's in a prison.
