I don't know what to do...

I don't know what to do...

There's someone in my life, that's family which has hurt me for too long. She's my older sister. This is going to be a bit long, but I guess I'm just really upset now and I need some input on the whole thing. It's as if I've taken a step back from this situation, and attempting to evaluate it for what it is at the moment. I'm trying to find meaning, and learn from it. At this point in time, ultimately I want to come to the decision. Should I keep this person in my life? Or cut them out completely... for they may be detrimental to my own growth as a person.

She's just a nasty person. She treats me badly. Calls me many things, has petty jabs at me whenever she can. Whether it has to do with my appearance, my intelligence, my lack of friends, my never having a relationship. The situation is that I live with her, and her daughter with my parents and uncle. I'm a University student, at that age of fragility I suppose where you're attempting to find your identity. She, is about a decade or so older than me. She had a break-down earlier this year after splitting from a ten year relationship, and went on a spree of having intercourse with random guys she'd meet on the internet. She fell hard for one of them, and was on the verge of suicide. I had to act as her confidante for an entire year, attempting to coax her out of doing so. She was on the floor, a writhing mess. She wanted to end herself, but I comforted her out of it. From then on, I continued listening to her complaining about life. How she hated people out of just the way they looked, as if they were lesser beings due to being 'ugly'. How her friends were all 'fake and stupid bitches'. I just had to sit there and nod my head. When it came to conversation with her it was always one-sided. Whenever I seeked comfort or someone to confide in when things got tough, she'd ignore me completely. Not on purpose- no. It was if she lacked the very facility to comfort anyone sincerely. She wouldn't say anything, she'd just look away as if I didn't say a word. The lights were on her, always. She'd immidately turn the conversation back onto herself, and I'd have to forget about my pains and struggles. She was more important. She'd do me favors, I'd appreciate it. Such as spotting me lunch and such. Looking back however, I felt as if I was her pet. If I didn't obey any of her rules, she'd be quick to shout 'After all I've done for you'. Every move I made was used against me.

Out of being her confidante for an entire year, I saw her from a different perspective. Who she truly was. I went from admiring her, to loathing her. It dawned on me, after her brief explosion towards me, some nights ago that: "This woman hates me, and she will never see me differently."

I don't know why though. I never did anything... she just hates me. She just hates me.

She called me a number of things, which perplexed me. Saying I was immature, spoilt, ingrateful, and that I thought I ran the household. I don't, not one bit. It just confuses me. Where an earth would something like this come from? I like to pretend it doesn't hurt me, like it doesn't effect me. Like I have strength in me. But that's not true. It does hurt me. It does. I cry in the bathroom because I can't let her see this, because if she sees this... she feels empowered. She'll prance around the house, her croaky voice booming all through-out... happy with much gaiety and lightness in her voice. It's a victory in her eyes. Me, I've always been seen as a useless idiot. She always calls me: weak, gutless, useless, stupid regardless of my achievements. I observed in public she became someone else entirely different. She'd wear these 'masks' out in public, becoming the sweetest and most saccharine person you'd ever meet. On the phone, she was someone else. Then when she'd come back to the household, she'd turn into a venemous viper. Spitting venom about everyone and anyone she'd observe on social media or the T.V. Rarely she'd talk about their abilities, always she'd nit pick their looks. She always had this complex in her, whenever someone went wrong, it was everyone elses' fault. She was the victim. Never can she take responsibility. Her daughter, for one. She never raised, and still doesn't pay her so much attention. It makes me sad. Even when she does pay her attention, it feels unatural and mechanical the way she does it. As if it's rehearsed from what the 'ideal mother is'. It's brief too. When she's done doing those fake queues to quash her guilt, she goes back to herself.

She was insecure about her looks, how she's 'old', how she can't have anymore kids, how she's not in a relationship. Yet, it's funny. She projects all of the very same bullshit onto me. She says I'm a spinster, I'm ugly, I'm fat, I'm probably a lesbian, and that I'll never find anyone. I've noticed also, she has this need to prove me wrong on everything and anything. It doesn't matter what it is.

Her last explosion, I suppose came from jealousy. The middle sister. Her and I have been hanging out with one another frequently. I never pushed her to invite me anywhere, but she did so willingly whilst the older sister wasn't. I was told I was more mellow company in comparison. This made her distant towards me, the older sister, and she began treating me differently. She started doing odd things, like smothering the middle sister and raising her voice loudly in the room so that all attention was on her, it as if she was saying 'Oh my god, look at me, I'm so interesting!' After that explosion, on her part, she knew she did wrong in the eyes of everyone of the household. She is now currently trying to act overtly kinder than usual to everyone. I accepted her apology, but whilst doing so I whinced at her. She noticed. For I suppose, for once I saw through her. I spent a whole year, listening to her prattle on about her issues. She was vulnerable towards me. I know her secrets, yet I don't exploit them as she does with mine. Genuinely, I wanted her to be okay. I wanted to help her. But I can't anymore. I just can't.

It's not really the words that hurt me. It's how she says them. She insults with such fire, such hate, and such venom in her voice. As if she contempts your very existence. As if she is disgusted of you. I don't wish to destroy her, or 'cause her any harm. I know she will do that herself. She will destroy herself. I know she will. Her life seems to have this vicious cycle. When that happens though, I don't want to be there. For she is attempting to destroy me.

I just, I don't know. What can I make of this situation. Why does she hate me so much? This isn't a new thing. She's hated me ever since I was six years old. I have a terrible memory of her then I don't want to bring up- I just want to know. What would you do if you were in this situation? I am at a turning point in my life where I've said I won't be like everyone else, shrugging off her behavior. I want to grow as a person. I want to be the best version of myself possible. I just don't think I can be, if I keep forgiving her.

@Dark_Olena

Thank-you so much for posting on my discussion.

My mother seems to be the perfect teacher for that. Thriving on drama. You're not wrong. Both of them enjoy nothing more but to sit down and gossip about this person or that person. Generally, I don't really care enough to dissect and pick a part other people's lives... so there's a separation between us for that reason. More or less, their kvetching is a form of bonding.

She does do that; makes me feel responsible for her (she blames everyone around her for everything wrong in her life). I'm sorry to hear you've gone through something similar also... My support and heart goes out to your situation also, and again, thank-you for posting your support.

Hi @Wolfies,

I'v just resonded in your other discussion thread here on Sane, too.

I have to ask you why you think you would have to sever your relationship with your parents in order to move out of home? Moving out of home at 22 years of age is a normal thing to do... why wouldn't your parents support you? Especially since they must be aware of the conflict between you and your sister? Wouldn't they want you both to be happy?

@Wolfies, your sister has some serious psychological issues and she refuses to get professional help. It's so sad, but ultimately it's not your responsibility to try and help your sister.... it's her own responsibility. You can probably help her more by putting a bit of distance between you. Let her come to you if she needs your support, but tell her flat out that you are not going to tolerate her abuse.

Can you get accommodation at your Uni? Tell them you are fleeing an abusive relationship (which is so true!) and you need their help. I think they will be able to find something for you. Universities pour a lot of money into student services... they are there to help; you only have to ask. They should provide free counselling, too.

Honestly, I think you have gone over and above the call of duty in tolerating your sister for this long! You must now take care of yourself and your mental health.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Hi. Sounds like she hates herself not you. She is projecting her feelings about herself on to everyone else. Like someone else said putting up boundaries for yourself is the way to go. I kind of feel sorry for her. You sound like a strong articulate well adjusted person who has been through a lot and come out stronger. Well done to you. Teach people how to treat you is the one thing dr phill has said that stuck with me. Sorry for pop psychology. Be strong be yourself it's good enough. Xx

Re: I don't know what to do...

Sounds like you need to remove yourself from the situation whether you are in the position to or not as it's definitely not healthy and as someone who was "damaged"from family crap you need to realise that you could do more harm to yourself by staying and it could come at a cost eg:you can only take so much before you crack. Is it worth taking the risk by staying?I also once did anything to please people but it came at a high price. You need to look after you.

You're absolutely right. Was moving away the best decision for yourself? I have thought about it, and a lot of people here have suggested it. For some reason, I'm too afraid too and I'm having doubts on whether or not I should. Finances, and fears of being attacked if I live on my own crop up one too many times.

Right now, I do pretty much anything to please people. I want to stop that.

Re: I don't know what to do...

I stayed Wolfie, and it contributed greatly to my mental health problems later on due to realising I was unappreciated and made sacrifices in life that I regretted deeply due to the psychological hold we let family have. You are suffering a form of abuse. Its easy I understand for me to give advice, its you who has to live with it and know what you can do,but I wish I knew what I know now...that your mental health is more important than finances or pleasing someone who at the end of the day isn't worth the effort through their actions.I made other people's problems mine including sisters.I have not spoken to my two sisters for many years, one since 2001,the other 1995 around because she would use the crap out of me and I raised her kids with my mother due to her problems. Not the only issue,as well as a mother who has never let me have a life due to their own self centered problems. Removing yourself from the situation would let you focus on you,as sometimes we need to step back and see the whole picture. When I stopped talking to my sister's,it gave me this opportunity to see what was wrong.I tried with one sister this year to make amends, but it didn't last long because the problems were still there, and I won't put myself through that.If you leave you were concerned for your safety, but if you stay ask yourself "Do I feel safe?". Avoiding her can be a full time job and cause anxiety for you.The other sister always put me down she was the first born, favourite(,which was stated by relatives as well),perfect in looks .I was overweight, and had speech problems etc.I will never forgive her for the things she did to me,and I was made out to be the jeolous one.In reflection,I think she had issues eg: putting me down to make herself feel good, beleving she was superior to me. We let family define who we are, which can be debilitating.I had to distance myself only after irreparable damage had been done.If you do stay, you need to put self care tactics in place for yourself, whether it's taking yourself away for weekends or movies, anything to give you a chance to have control over your life.

This is an update on the situation for everyone here.

I'm afraid however, I'm going to have to put up with her for the next two or so years until I'm stable enough to escape. Tonight, she was awful rude to me for no reason. She wanted me to download a movie for her, and I misheard her and she was awful rude to me. So I said "Fine, I'm not putting it on, unless you ask nicely." To which she said "No chance." This eventually errupted into a full-scale argument, this time I refused to back down from her and I let it all out. The truth about her, and what I thought about her. I didn't take the punches, and I wasn't aggressive. I stated it as if it was a matter of fact. She said I was going to wander off and cry about it, and guess what... I didn't. Right now, I don't feel like it. I'm still shaking though. I've never done anything like this... It's just wow. I never knew I could.

I've come to a point where what she says or thinks of me is like pillows now. She's a piece of shit, pardon my language and why should I let her opinions, thoughts or feelings validate my existence? I said to her "I don't give a shit about what you think, or say about me anymore... Seeing as you can't talk because your life is fucked up as it is."

I hurt her deeply, me saying that. Finding her insecurities, and throwing them right back at her like a bevvy of rockets. She says I'm a loon, and that I'm crazy. I am, so what? At least I'm coming to terms with accepting those deepest parts of me. The parts others would use against you. I am coming to accept them. I am fucked up, and I'm okay with that. I would rather be myself than ever be her in a million years.

At the age of 22, I needed to do that. I need to stand up to her, I needed to cut her out of my life mentally. I can't at least, physically. Not yet. Staying around her will make me stronger. Sure, I saw this in a negative light at first, but it can be a learning experience if I let it be. I'm sure my defiance will strain my relationship with my other sister. If it does, who cares? I said it. Who cares. I have spent too long being taken advantage of, being trampled on, and being saw as the dishcloth of the family. They have opinions? So do I! You kick me, I'll kick you back twice as hard. I've tried being nice and what has that gained me? Nothing. My peace has come at the cost of my freedom. If I need to resolve that confict within myself, I can't run away... not yet.

It'll be a hard road, but god dammit... if I want to grow as a person I have to stand up to that demon. That personficiation of my insecurity and negativity instilled in me from a young age. What she says doesn't matter, because the truth is, it's my life.

Re: I don't know what to do...

@Wolfies. I think you did what your body and brain has been telling you to do for a long time.
You called her out on her behavior and her attitude to you.
I've done this myself with. I did it with my dad when I was younger than you. Yes it left me shaking. But then I never regretted what I said to him that day. He knew where I stood. We still had a relationship - up until he passed away. And in a way - I'd like to think he was proud of me for standing up to him - & becoming an adult.
Your sister may keep up with her behavior. She has done it for so long & she (normally) gets her way. But no longer from you.
Stick to your guns. Be nice and yourself when she is. Pull back and don't tolerate her behavior when she isn't.
Well done. Sending you a big hug. You were brave. You did it.

Re: I don't know what to do...

Hi @Wolfies,

That is such a great effort in starting to put in place some boundaries with your sister. You should be really proud of yourself for taking some of the control away from your sister as I am sure that was really hard to do and I can only imagine how exhausted you felt afterwards. Over time this will become easier but just take your time and look after yourself when you have these altercations, that is really important.

Don't let her make you feel bad for sticking up for yourself, you deserve to be treated nicely 🙂

Re: I don't know what to do...

You are only 22,sounds like you have a good insight into the situation. As I stated but it only needs one moment for you to crack under keeping this up.It does depends on factors eg:if your parents don't favour one sibling over the other etc,how well the situation can continue.I live in a similar situation, which causes a lot of hopelessness.Just keep it in perspective, and do things with friends etc where the home situation isn't your world so the walls don't feel like they are closing in.
