Christmas

Christmas

With only 8 weeks till Christmas I am starting to stress. How on earth do I get enough money to buy gifts. It is the busiest time at work and then all the tourists come down for the christmas period. They are rude, want to be served straight away and have no respect. Even on the roads it is terrible.

But christmas - OMG i can't believe there is only 8 weeks. I really don't know how we are going to do it this year.

With no extended family or parents to celebrate and mother in law in aged care - it will be very quiet. What gets me all the time is customers ask me 'what are you doing for christmas' and I just say 'oh no nothing much". this is the first time in 5 yrs that hubby won't be working. he works in a hospital kitchen so if christmas falls on a weekday he has to work.

Panic has hit me. How do others on here cope with the lead up to Christmas? And also on Christmas Day, would does everyone do?

Stressing already, not much pays before Christmas.

Hi @BlueBay 💕

I know what you mean regarding Christmas. 😯😮
I find it the most stressful time of the year.
I end up on an emotional rollercoaster usually, for many reasons.

I try to make it nice for my daughter. There's just the 3 of us. I'm going to try and think of something different to do, so it's not a terrible time for us. 😊🎊🎉

I think most people get stressed about it, unfortunately.

I know what you mean about not having family to spend it with.

Can you think of a way to make it better this year perhaps? Something different.

Hugs to you. 😙💜

Re: Christmas

Hi @BlueBay. Have a think about what you would appreciate for a gift that wouldn't break the budget. Your MIL is in care, therefore something small like an ornament she could admire, or maybe a photo of the family. I have been getting a bit of that lately from our clients. I usually tell them it's just going to be a quiet time to relax and unwind from a busy eventful year. Depending on the weather and where you live, perhaps a barby, or maybe go out for the main meal (be it lunch or dinner). Curl up with hubby and listen to some relaxing music, or a nice movie. Is it just you two, do you have children? I think, just chill out, relax and unwind. Enjoy the peace of quiet Christmas. If you enjoy a drink, have a bottle of wine or bubbly, toast each others happiness.

Hi @Former-Member@pip

I do have 3 adult children (24,23,20) and we will spend christmas day together. If it is a hot day, I think we will have a cold lunch buffet type thing and then go to the beach. It will be easy and simple. But the day still triggers memories and grief over not having my own parents with me. It is their decision to not talk to me so I will have a good day with my own children and husband.

I was thinking that this year we may give money to our kids as they are older now and prefer to buy their own stuff. But I still like to buy something small for them to open up on Christmas Day. My daughter (24) loves christmas, she will decorate the xmas tree, the house and put the lights up. She loves the day. Last year she even make xmas cookies!!! I have to enjoy the day for them as well, I don't want them to see me moping around and being upset - they are my family now.

We will most likely go to visit MIL the day before, give her a frame with photos of her grandchildren and flowers and chocolate. She won't know any different. It will be sad for my husband not to have his mum home with us but I think he will be okay. Don't think he will want to bring her home for the day as she is high care.

Finances - i think i better start shopping now, that way it won't seem so much the week before. OK, this week I will buy 2 small presents and put them away.

Re: Christmas

Hi @BlueBay. I can relate to Christmas without your m/d. Mine are now deceased, but when we were at home, Christmas day inevitably finished up with fights and arguments. If you had Christmases that were in the same vein, spending them now quietly relaxing is a far better alternative. It is sad for your hubby adjusting to his mum's declining mental health/physical health, but knowing she is being looked after should help him relax. Try to accept your parents decision and know that is was their decision, not yours. Parents can cause problems with growing children as often they tend to forget the kids are adults and still try to lead them. You never stop being a parent and when the kids tell you they are adults and can make their own decisions, it hurts. However, your kids, even though they're older are still your baby's, but guiding them rather than chastising them works better. My daughter and I are still estranged (her choice). It hurts, but I'm hopeful she will mellow and want to reconcile. I'm open to her. I don't know your details regarding your parents, but maybe take a moment alone to wish them (silently), Merry Christmas and love you.

Re: Christmas

Hi @pip

Thank you 🙂

Why am i so emotional this morning, can't stop crying 😞

When i look back to past christmases with my parents and siblings it was always a rush to eat so my parents (or my mum) wanted to go home. Stupid excuses, 'oh have to feed the dog'; or 'the roads will be busy'. We could never just sit and relax. And arguments yes so many of them alwasy with her and an inlaw. I would sit there and say never again. I can never relax.

It is nice in a way without them but it damn hurts so much without my dad. Not sure if you've read my story in previous posts, long story short - i remembered i was sexually abused as a child 6 yrs ago, told my parents they abandoned and stopped talking to me. My mum is so toxic, manipulative and controlling. Sent letters explainig my depressoin she returned it. sent my dad a birthday card and present she returned it.

I have no contact at all with my dad. I so miss him and now he is at the beginning of dementia.

I hope that your daughter and you can reconcile one day. I have a daughter and our relationship is really good, i hope it stays that way; but you just never know what could happen.

I was always really really close to my mum, would call her every single day. And now there is nothing. I sometimes think 'gee i must ring mum to tell her this or that' and then i stop and think no i can't. it really hurts.

Sorry i've gone off track.

Re: Christmas

Hello @BlueBay

What you have planned sounds good and simple and real. Its funny how we sometimes long for things of the past but often they werent that good anyway. Christmas is what it means to the individuals involved. I am glad your girl likes to decorate the tree. Dont stress too much about the money. Dont spend money you dont have. As the kids are big they will understand. Make the little plans.

I often started buying presents in July as I had to make it by October for the sending gifts by sea to the overseas family in America.

My Christmases with family have been disturbed one or another most of my life. I put a lot of effort into it in my own way .. trying to find the most diplomatic solution .. so I did not stand on tradition ..First year with my husband was about driving across town to drop baby off with biological grandparents & the "mother", then I was trying to please my mother or my husband or my kids or trying to avoid an argument. One year we went to Wilson's Prom early and I decorated a tree and put presents under it in the campsite. One year I went to my daughter's for a tiny Christmas of her, my son & I. Some years, I am alone. Not sure about this year as my son is with his father at the moment. One year I prepared a Dutch meal for my mother but offended a girlfriend who expected an English dinner ... Now it is also the anniversary of my mother's death. It was mostly all about her anyway, even when she was alive.

Music and religion was a major aspect of christmas for me growing up so I have kept those. themes going and plan to sing midnight mass. Sometimes I have done the Vinnies soupvan.

At first it was hard doing christmas alone or just with my son, but I am getting used to it. Last year I came on the forum and said hi to few people. I hope to do the same this year. I even feel relieved that I dont need "buy" into all the hype. Its cheaper on my purse and my energy. If my son is home we just have another quiet reflective day doing music and our stuff, like most other days, with slightly better food.

I found it hard socially with a lot of people carrying on about all the preparation .. but now I see that as posturing and boasting if they cant actually relate about anything else. A couple of years a friend tried to get me invited places but that was embarrassing and more about him.

Christmas is based on the story of a babe in a stable. I have lived in a renovated stable when I was 17 (in Middle Park) and it was beautiful, slate floors and spiral wooden staircase. My uncle did it.. Humble & simple is fine.

Dont worry too much @BlueBay find your calm centre.

Anyway thats from me Apple who had an almighty panic attack last week ... who knows what the day will bring. God Bless.

Re: Christmas

@Appleblossom you are truly a beautiful inspirational person 🙂

I love the way you support me and give me advice. Thank you so much.

You know I used to go to church every Christmas with my parents and even when i had little kids. But now I have not gone for quite a few years and I think if i went now I would burst into tears. You see I used to always pray to God, every single night. But when my childhood abuse came out I was angry at God. I blamed Him for not protecting me, for not loving me. But after a few years to now, I have come to realise that God has a purpose for everyone in life. And I think for me it is to become a stronger better person on my own, to not seek reasurrance or advice from my mum, to trust and believe in myself. This i am still learning.

My daughter loves the Christmas songs, so we usually put on the CD and listen to that for a while.

What I find hard is all the questions - what are you doing for Christmas. And then seeing some of my close friends have all their family together - it sort of makes me a bit jealous. But i shouldn't be because i have my own family (children).

I really hope you have a nice day today @Appleblossom.

Love chatting with you.xxxooo

Re: Christmas

You have beautiful children @BlueBay Enjoy them.

it is awkward socially, but then

i began to perceive the realities of the other people's days ..

it was in a snooty city choir ... with lawyers, doctors etc .. and they all have their pain, scandals or NQR areas.

so

i am now trying to learn the art of deflecting competitiveness and being congruent with me.

Glad you are finding meaning in the horrible situation with you mum's behaviour.

Re: Christmas

@BlueBay

Its funny you mention Christmas cause just yesterday on a post I mentioned that I noticed everyone is starting to get more stressed and ill and I said "maybe becuaes xmas is around the corner "!

Christmas is a horrible time of year for me, I used to spend it with my "family"which always resulted in backstabbing, bitching and arguements - not fun! I think also the only person who ever showed me love was my grandmother and she passed away on boxing day manny years ago from lung cancer so that makes me think of her. BUT

Before I stopped having any contact with my toxic family I cut xmas out and found my stess levels and anxiety went down tremendously. I figured why should I spend a day travelling around, in arguments, stressed and basically just have a horrible day and then me and my partner would go home and argue. My family never cared about my feelings so I figured yeah this will piss them off but hey they have done so much to me with little thought, its about time I think of myself and whats healthy for me. So I stopped going over on xmas, I would see her just before or just after and in time they accepted it I think. Now I dont have anything to do with my family at all and much better!

Also @BlueBay you mentioned how sad you felt about your relationship with your parents, well as they you can choose your friends but not your family. When my father died I was 25 and had so much mixed emotions as the last time I had anything to do with him about 2 years previously he had physcially abused me. I realised later that I was mourning the father I never had rather than the father I did have. Now, well if I saw my father alive somewhere I would do what I have wanted to do all my life - go up to him and punch him square in the face! boy that would feel good! I never realised just how dsyfunctional my family was until I started to get therapy so I never had that anger release because I was also told by my family as a child when I was upset "but he is your father!" that apparently made everything exuseable.

You have your own children now so make a special christmas for you and them and dont worry about anyone else or the pressures of xmas and gifts - thats not what it is meant to be about. Now me and my partner just treat xmas like another day and do whatever except the afct that I dont venture out ANYWHERE between xmas and new year - I wait till the madness settles.

Hope you feel better - give your beautiful kelpie a hug!
