Unmotivated 19Y male TW: Suicide

Unmotivated 19Y male TW: Suicide

TW: Suicide

I'm mum to a 19Y male who made a serious attempt on his life just over two and a half years ago. It has been a long and traumatic time for us all since. He is in therapy. Please how do I motivate him to get out and live life. He sits infront of a screen all day waiting for the day to be over. He has Asperges but is academically sound. Hopefully working real soon part time. He wants to date but puts no effort into going out or reaching out to anyone. I'm exhausted from it all. How can I convince him to talk to his friends before he has none left. He joined a group that won't start up again until next year. I need him to want to live.

I feel similarly in my family. @Senorita

Have you tried courses, workshops or memberships or trips interstate?

Re: Unmotivated 19Y male

Hi @Senorita,

Welcome to the Forums. My name is FloatingFeather and I am one of the peer support workers at SANE.

I am really sorry to read how difficult things have been for your son, your family and yourself over the last few years. Watching someone you love struggle and that feeling of helpless is something I am familiar with. My heart goes out to you all.

At the end of the day (as you said) as much as we want to wish it for our children your son needs to want to live.

My son (also 19 at the time) was struggling with a sense of being lost and had serious depression. I felt some of his problem was related to the fact that he didn't have a purpose in his life at the time. I knew he loved animals so I encouraged him to find a job in that area. Fortunately he did find a job at a pet store which he loves til this day. Many benefits came from this job for my son including it gave him a routine, a purpose in life, something to look forward to and most importantly (in my opinion) social interaction with people of a similar age group.

It wasn't the miracle cure and he still has rough days but it definitely helped build his confidence and helped ease his mind around depression.

Do you also have some support / someone you can talk to? This is not an easy place for you to be in either. If you don't have support I would really encourage you to talk to your GP, a trusted family member or friend etc as this would be taking it's toll on you (and others in your family) as well. This is a link to some information around being a carer that may be of some help family and carers.

I wish you, your son and your family all the best.

Warm wishes,

FloatingFeather

PS. a couple of tips for the Forums - if you want to directly chat with someone on the Forums use the @ symbol and then start typing their name directly after it. A dropdown box should appear, and you then select their name. This ensures that they are notified of any posts you mention them in. Another tip is that the most recent posts are the latest page numbers.

@Senorita Hi

what things does he enjoy?

A good starting point is focusing on the things he likes what ever that is.

Sounds like a very heartbreaking situation. As his mother it must hurt you deeply.

Yes. I need to know what to say to get him to move and do things cause he shuts down all my suggestions

Re: Unmotivated 19Y male

He won't do anything I suggest so I have to talk to his therapist to get him to suggest things, I just feel we are no longer getting anywhere ge is so stubborn, does not like people or social settings.

Hi @Senorita, just a little trick for the forums. When you click "reply", the person you're replying to also needs to be tagged in your message.

You do this by clicking "@" and then typing their name (and selecting them).

For example, @Senorita 😊

@Senorita, I thought I'd tag a few of the other carers here who might be able to offer some thoughts. @Determined @tired_sisyphus @ClareBear @Shaz51 @Emmylou @Bunniekins @Krishna ❤️

Hi. I have the same issue. My son is 18 and we were apart for four years due to work and then pandemic. We are now together, but he is so unhappy in our new place. I found out that when I left, he was self harming. Now that we are together, we are slowly picking up the pieces. We have been seeing psychiatrist and psychologist. Medication and counselling. I am exhausted too and feeling anxious everyday myself. A big, big, big, hug to you.

@Senorita hi sorry to hear that you are going through such a hard time with your child. i have 2 children with complex needs and our psychiatrist during the worst of times said to me that once son2 gets to the age of 23 he will settle down. he is 29 now takes his meds and is so much better in himself. it is not perfect as his autism and schizophrenia takes a toll on him but it is better.
