Friends....

Friends....

I have never had friends that were sincere. All friends I had were connected to an ex that was toxic and so were the friends.
As a result of these interactions I am very wary of people. It seems that the older you get the more difficult it is to meet healthy people.
I have little emotional space to worry about inappropriate people.
Keeping my life emotionally stable is my priority.

Re: Friends....

It sounds like a good plan @janedoe2. I've been lucky with the few friends I've got but have had to isolate myself at times as well. I think you just need to be patient. I've found so many beautiful souls out in the world and most have faced adversity of some kind. However I've found through my MI it is really hard to keep those friendships going as I am unstable frequently. I hope that when I'm well enough I'll be able to make new friends and rekindle old ones. But I think you said it best "keeping my life emotionally stable" is the best key to survival right now. Best wishes 💜😊

Re: Friends....

It's tough when you feel alone. I've never had friends easily and my mi has played havoc with those I've had. Sometimes you just need to focus on staying stable but in the future perhaps try to meet people through your interests. Reading groups, community garden. Volunteering.... Hope your feeling in better space soon

Re: Friends....

@janedoe2. Mental illness can sometimes isolate us from creating or even maintaining friendships. But there are things you can do to help yourself.
Although your friends were associated with your ex - was there a special friend you were close to that you could keep in contact with.
Finding friends as an adult is in some ways harder than when we were young and at school.
I moved from Melbourne to a small country town. I met people through mmy sons school and also through some volunteering with local charities.
When I go shopping - I give myself plenty of time - as this way I can give extra time to conversations with others.
Activities - what do you enjoy doing? Hobbies, volunteering, sports or art classes.
Is there something that you have always wanted to learn - a language or musical instrument.
By doing things you enjoy - you will meet like minded people & friendships can blossom.
All the best
