Recovery after a high energy episode

Recovery after a high energy episode

After about 6 weeks of being very high energy (what some call “Hypomania”) I am now on the other side. My energy is gone.

Its Sunday arvo and I have to be back at work tomorrow morning but I can hardly get out of bed as I am so depleted and exhausted.

Does anyone know of some ways to support myself to recover quicker? Or is it a matter of acceptance and riding it out?

thanks so much for any advice or ideas

Well, my first thought is diet stuff. That's almost always a bit hard to do when fragmented but can really help with putting yourself back together.

There is a great TED talk about how to make stress you friend, if you're interested https://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_friend

In it's spirit, I recommend a pat on the back and maybe some cocoa for making your way, as a reward for making it through the tribulation.

Hey @Cuddlefish , welcome to the forums 🙂 Great you could reach out here.

Are these high energy/low energy episodes a regular thing? Depending on whether there is an underlying medical element, it's hard to suggest what you can do.

Hope things get better for you,

tyme

Thanks for your reply 🙂

No, not very often for me, thankfully. I haven’t had such an episode for years.

I don’t believe there is anything medical- bloods are all good, etc just a crash from going hard for a while (couldn’t opt out of most of it, managed to keep the episode within manageable limits)

All I can find online is the usual sleep hygiene, vit b and avoid stimulants lol I’m across all that.

Nothing is really bad, I’m managing the relentless unhelpful thoughts quite well, it’s just the fatigue that’s got me really really physically flat. The constant tears and inability to do the things I need to do is hard also.

Thank you for the link! I might go have a look at that in a little while.

Diet is a good one, though. I am making moves to improve that aspect of my life.

Cocoa sounds perfect though!

Sorry to hear about the constant tears @Cuddlefish . I'm sure that does drain you.

For me, I have an effervescent multivitamin tablet when I'm really tired. I find it helps a lot. Just put it in water, let it dissolve and drink it in the morning.

Yes, and of course all the normal sleep hygiene, diet etc.

Sounds odd but going for a walk for fresh air also helps!

I hear you!

I’ve had my fake berocca and a walk at the beach (put my feet in water, too!)

Sounds like we have similar strategies

Yes @Cuddlefish - that's exactly what I'd do.

I also wanted to let you know that you can type "@" in front of usernames so that they get a notification e.g. @tyme 🙂

Re: Recovery after a high energy episode

@Cuddlefish For me the worst thing I can do it push myself when I am flat.

I do not get hypomania but I do get a ton of hypo arousal and coming down from that is utterly exhausting.

I accept, drink lots of water, small walks if I can. Fresh air and a bit of cold therapy. Also make sure that I am eating super healthy and doing a bit of light stretching. If I can’t move then I meditate wherever I am. That way I am still working my mental muscles and am aware of my thoughts during this phase.

It’s a tough time. Give yourself a pat on the back for doing this.

@tyme

Thank you for teaching me that 🙂

@Little_Leopard

I don’t know what is the difference between Hypomania and hyperarousal. I don’t really use the word Hypomania in my own life as it doesn’t reflect my experience. Hyperarousal sounds more accurate. Everything in my body upregulates- inflammation, mental arousal, irritability, nerves and associated sciatica… everything goes up except sleep haha

@Cuddlefish

Hypomania is more to do with mood swings and is related to conditions like bipolar for example.
Hyper arousal is related to trauma stress response and is associated with trauma related conditions like PTSD for example
