Multiple Viewpoints: Mental Illness is NOT for Dummies

Multiple Viewpoints: Mental Illness is NOT for Dummies

As a person who has experienced mental health issues from a range of viewpoints and who has worked hard to overcome stigma in the community I make this slightly tongue in cheek comment. I hope it does not offend anybody.

Last week I started an online course about caring for People with Psychosis. It is good to learn that most my knowledge is sound. It has a good range of highly qualified psychiatrists on it and has more of a UK than a US slant, which caters to my preferences.

I am not leaving the forum, but will be logging on less. I dont like divisive tactics or popularity contests (too much of a loner) but dont want to contribute to anything that would cause anyone distress.

I was horrified about the Gold Coast teen drug hospitalisations this week. Rather than hysteria about drug use or the range of other symptoms of human dis-ease I do try to be calm and analytical. I also try and use my stories for the good.

How we go about questions of human living is open to debate ... as it should be.

Regards to anyone who reads this.

@Appleblossom. This course sounds great. I hope it continues to be a passion for you - learning and helping others.
It will be sad tgat yoy wont be around as much - but I do hope you pop in from time to time for a chat.
I have appreciated your advice on many occasions. I'm sorry if I did not give back to you - as much as you gave to me.
I wish you all the very best on your new journey & please - don't be a stranger.

Best wishes for yr course. Having a lived experience will make u a valuable practioner. I worked as a M/H professional for years both before and after my own illness and the insight I gained made me far more effective helping others. Plus, wen people say, 'but u don't understand' u can say 'oh yes I certainly do!' Gives u far more credibility. Best wishes.

I guess @Appleblossom that what I see you doing so well is destigmatising so many aspects of MI. You were one of the first people to get where I was at but it's not just about me. Your responses to the souls crying out to connect always seem to hit the mark because of your wealth of knowledge and expansive experiences. I can understand you wanting more time for you to explore other things and I respect that whole heartedly. I just hope that you know you that you are highly valued here. Looking forward to reading your posts as always and seeing what evolves for you in the future. Take really really good care of you 😊💜🤗💐

I will be watching out for you @Appleblossom 🙂 you're an important person in my life now and will be here listening. I did catch a little of what has been happening lately and understand how it has been difficult! but you as always are true to yourself, and this is part of the reason i respect you so highly.

Well done on persuing your studies, it sounds very interesting. I have done some online study through open universities in the UK and found them to be far better than online study offered in Australia.

Here with you,

LJ

Re: Multiple Viewpoints: Mental Illness is NOT for Dummies

Thank you everybody for your good wishes and support. Because of my little flare up ending up in visiting Emergency on Tuesday .. (The 2nd one in my life - last one at 17) it might take me a little time to get completely back on board with the course and forum.

I am well enough to manage basic care for self and son. And well enough to get him to vote in a local election. Am withdrawing from other engagements for a while and only managing a skype session with psychologist today. That will be a first for me .. but it has been useful to be on forum and get all these ideas about how to manage things.

@Appleblossom. So pleased you were pro active with your health & went to the emergency dept. I'm sure it may have been a scary process, but I'm so glad you took care of you first. Now you can manage more and also look after your son.
I'm sending you my best wishes and hugs. ♥♥♥

Thanks @Former-Member and @utopia

No utopia, you have lead a protected life sorry, I have a lot less faith in our medical system than you ... I did something potentially dangerous in barefeet on the road and police and ambulance were called because a kind lady follwed me home. Nobody listens to me when I say I am in crisis ... At least this time in the ambulance I was aware ... when I was 17 I was not.

In the ambulance I said ... oh did I do attention seeking ... but he said not I needed care. I was also very distressed as a clerk at my local emergency centre ... has been playing social exclusion games like the one I experienced on night shift recently .. I was mouthing off like the best of bogans ... saying I was sick of sucking up to cancer .. cos this lady liked to one up about haveoing cancer and being well plugged into health care and still able to hold down a job ... I think this ambo will think differently about her in the future ... I couldnt help it ... I am not well ... but too easily fobbed off .. even right now .. things are not working for me ...

the referalls the triage nurse gave me were out of date .. so I politely phoned and asked the hospital to take those names off their list of doctors ... then the new clinic ... I was to try ... has apparent problem with its fax machine or number ... I was told I had to nothing ... it was all taken care of ... but then phoned up and told to come in and collect paper referral and visit clinic .. but I am now too heavily medicated to drive and son doesnt have licence ... so now I feel very upset ... and my suicidal ideation is centreing around mental health care clinics .. I will try and be a good girl.

Also trying to get through and have aphone or skyp session with [sychologist at 4pm ... ie as I type .. not getting through .. I will check all connections again.

Very Ill

Sorry the incompetence is insulting .. I have been waiting to be triaged
