Something’s not right

Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

I can get any access to health services that I need.
I have had the worst experience with GP’s. They treat me like trash because my mental health condition is to much and to scary for them.
You would think that GP’s would show some compassion for people who have trauma related dissociative disorders but apparently not. Apparently it’s to freaky and it makes them uncomfortable.

I have not been able to get access to healthcare from a GP for over two years and they will not let me in there without a face mask these days anyway. They do not care that it triggers me and that I have trauma and a mental health condition which is suppose to make me exempt.

healthcare is totally useless. There is no good trauma GPS and no psychologist who take referrals from GP’s any more. Even the emergency department in the hospital system won’t help. If the problem is psychiatric they send you home and tell you to visit your GP (who are useless). They do not care if you have lost sense of reality and can not function. And for psychiatrists and psychologist the waiting list are so long and that’s even if you can get on a waiting list.

I feel defeated. I have tried everything and called everywhere. I keep getting passed around.

just feel so sad and pathetic and defeated. I don’t feel like there is a place in this system for me.

Awww @Little_Leopard ,

I'm soo sooo sorry to hear how hard it is to get support.

While looking, have you looked into our Guided Service to see if you are eligible to apply? https://www.sane.org/referral

Otherwise, you are welcome to contact our drop-in line (chat or phone): https://www.sane.org/get-support/drop-in-service

I hope you will be able to soon find the support you need. Are you able to look for another GP? Sometimes, it's the luck of the draw. I know for myself, I spent years looking. Once I found one helpful professional, I was linked to other helpful ones. But it takes one 'good' one.

Sitting with you,

tyme

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Hey @tyme

I actually had no idea. Thank you for that!

I just applied. I’m not from the areas that the program is running but I think I can still access the online version.
From the looks though, the online version is not as compressive in terms of the allied health stuff. I don’t know though.

I hope that my referral gets accepted!

I did not attach evidence of disability but I can provide it later if asked for it and if I am eligible

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

I'm sorry to hear this. I haven't had experience of not able to speak with GPs like you experience.

You just want someone who is health professionals to help you. If you don't have place to stay try St Bart's or Foundation housing. They be able to help you get into psychiatric help

I've been in psychiatric wards etc, I lived in crisis accommodation before I don't have parents they pass away. I'm living now with my partner.

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Hey @tyme.
I got an email saying that they can’t offer me access at this point in time.

You said that it took you three years to find a good GP. How did you end up managing to find a good one?

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

@Little_Leopard I’m also in the process of finding a new GP. My current one isn’t the same as he was before. I think many people in the health profession burn out. Finding a good GP can be hard but it is possible and can make a huge difference to your healthcare. I feel like a good way to start is by researching up GPs close to your area, looking for GPs that are interested in mental health.

In response to: Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

@creative_writer. Yeah the burn out is a massive issue for sure.
I am so keen to find a good GP who I can talk to and who listens. I don’t even mind if they are not experienced in Mental health. For me it is about the respect and the listening and the willingness to work together to figure things out. Experience would be ideal. But at the end of the day, the willingness to help and the attitude of the GP trumps everything else.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have looked up GP’s on the net and phoned around to ask about GP’s who are good with mental health. I have personally found that they say that are good but when you go in to see them they are rude and clearly have no idea when it comes to chronic mental health conditions.
They like to say that they do mental health but it’s more of a ticking the box kind of thing. I personally have found that many of them are scared of chronic mental health conditions. This is obviously also due to their lack of understanding and stigma (even in the medical community 🤦🏽‍♀️).

Also The GPs that don’t know what they are doing will never admit it In my experience. They just make you go away by being rude and dismissive. This has left me really traumatised and scared to continue looking.

I’m sorry that your GP isn’t working out for you anymore. Have you had any luck in your searches for a new one?

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

@Little_Leopard part of the process is trial and error too, it’s not always possible to click to the first health professional we see. Mental health is still stigmatised and misunderstood. I’ve found a GP but need to ask my parents just to confirm they don’t know her socially. She appears to be from the same ethnic minority group to us which can have its pros but it also increases the risk of encountering her socially.

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Really feel for you @Little_Leopard i know that feeling of desperation when you need help but can’t find the right people to gather around you.

i had a lot of bad experiences also, took me a while to find the right gp, a few different psychologists and the same with psychiatrists. It unfortunately took a lot of hospital admissions for me to be referred and accepted by community mh and I now have a great psychologist and psychiatrist there.

have you tried seeking support through the PHN?

In response to: Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Re: Feeling low, worthless and defeated.

Hey @Bow I haven’t tried the PHN for a few years but now you have reminded me I will try them again. Thank you for that!

Sounds like you know exactly what I am going through. Seems to be a struggle that many people have. It gives me hope though that most people eventually find a good GP and support network.

I hope I find mine soon. I have experienced so much stigma, shame and struggle. I can’t wait to find a good supportive network.

what you and @tyme have said has really hit home. It’s give me some hope and strength to continue the search. When I finally find someone good they will be able to help link me with other good services. Makes sense. Just have to get lucky and keep trying over and over.

How did you manage to find yours out of curiosity? Was if chance or a suggestion from a friend?
