Re: Antipsychotics tablets

All mental health medications are a balance between effects you can tolerate and symptom control.

A lot of it depends on your individual biochemistry and how you respond to the medication (as well as your adherence to taking the pills in the first place).

There are a lot of different types of antipsychotics, both first generation or typical antipsychotics or second generation or atypical antipsychotics. These come with different strengths, and can be used in concert with things like mood stabilisers, antidepressants, etc.

If you go to whoever gives you the meds and tell them you want to learn about them, they will be able to give you real medical advice about them. This will very likely win you some brownie points in terms of they think you're going to adhere to your pill schedule.

You are also entitled to a second opinion.

There is a whole range with different dosages for different presentations. @Sar12345

There seems to be an art to getting off depot onto tablets and then to tapering when ready and stable. Best done with treating team.

Re: Antipsychotics tablets

Don't underestimate the power of saying to them

"I accept that I am unwell, and I would really appreciate your expertise and help in managing my illness. While I am committed to taking my meds, I would like to work towards reducing my meds under your guidance, because the side-effects are intolerable. To support my mental health and prepare me for a life without relying on my meds to do all the work, I am working on stuff with my psychologist and building mental health supports in my life in these ways. Please tell me more about my meds so that I can understand what the lowest effective dose is to work towards."

Realistically, because you relapsed after going off the depo, they will want to keep you on meds for longer rather than shorter - maybe closer to 5 years.

Re: Antipsychotics tablets

Hi @Sar12345 some antipsychotics have different profiles, eg I know of one that is more strongly sedating and sometimes used in conjunction with others if insomnia is a problem, but isn't as effective an antipsychotic if used alone; and there's another that is said to be very effective but you need close monitoring and regular blood tests due to risk of adverse side effects. And the antipsychotic I'm on comes in a range of dosages. So yes there's definitely a range of strengths, between different antipsychotics as well as within a particular one.

So there are advantages to being on tablets as opposed to a depo. Definitely worth discussing with your psychiatrist.

Hi @Sar12345 ,

We are not allowed to mention medication on here. I'm sorry you are suffering.
