Doctors and why they take us for granted

Doctors and why they take us for granted

Is it just me or do others out there seem to get taken for granted by there GP. I recently went to mine after being advised by the pain to clinic to do so.I explained that the pain is getting worse by the day and that ive had 2 falls in the last week as my leg gives way.

the answer i get is well you might need a walking stick.

Not okay well lets find out why your pain has increased or why your leg is giving way.

So im just sititng at home in agony thinking i cant do this much longer while i wait to get assesed by the pain clinic and be told how to manage my pain.

i would like to see another GP that is in the practice but im not sure how my existing GP will respond to this .

Hi

unfortantly the western practices of medicine and health care even mental health are very restricted and genuiralized based on what they are taught and what fits into the health care pracice guidlines its like they have standardized forms ,documents and legal requirements but anything beyond illness and disease they are unaware on how to assist patients .I dislocated my knee back in march and left the hospital in a over sized brace and crutches with no follow up care plan .I then got told to see my doctor in two weeks which i was told to continue wearing the brace for a further 3 weeks plus issues with workers comp not allowing me to acecess physio which furtehr delayed treatment .Which still to this day limits my ability to bend and i an resitriced in what i can do .There needs to be more advanced and experenced training in the medical professional ,people with lived experence who understand because they have gone through falls ,dislocations ,limb and bone injurys that actually undertsnad the proper techniques and follow up care for patients to be able to recover quickly and be treated with the respect and care they deserve ,have a voice and be aware of there medical rights and what support they can access .Especally people who are suffering in agonizing pain daily and just told to treat there pain with mediction that may or may not work .The govermnet needs to support all humans to be able to seek professional and proper care to rehabilite throughout each individuals recoiovery and not just for those who can afford to acess private health care .hope you have a speedy recovery .take care .If you feel you are not being provided with the care and treatment you need and deserve change GP'S

Re: Doctors and why they take us for granted

In the area of Mental Health / ASD - ADHD - PTSD and other neurological conditions that affect behaviors, many of these would be healing centers and hospitals would do well to undergo a complex behaviour program to dial down their own prejudices.

In terms of the lower socio economic ladder I consider overwhelmed GPs a threat to my well being and avoid them at all costs. I require finding one that respects me, that takes the time to get to know me, that allows me the time to speak, that listens to me and does not talk over the top of me. Very, very, hard to find within such demographic.

Pays to shop around and if affected with mental illness and other neurological conditions it might be best to have an advocate help you find a doctor with a mental health interest and or the experience not to openly judge you. Know what you want, write it down so you don't get side tracked - If you don't agree let them know and why. If they are disrespectful thank them for their time and politely leave.

Stigma is such a huge problem on this rung.

I don't want use too many words or put others off, but I do wish to be honest and share with you that your title is well written. I have a good idea re the answer but again... given the over referencing we are conditioned with when referring others to GPs... I do not wish to put others off. In mental health GPs are used as a buffer zone and have done a lot of damage to many of my family and friends I know regarding previous well built plans ... regardless of the accolades re front line workers. The latter a place where stigma thrives and the gloss re online posters lose their shine. Instead we are met with posters of some screaming where such actions are foretold before ever having taken place. Of course depends on the type or demographic of medical center you are frequenting.

Much of a muchness in this conveyor belt age.

Love the title of this thread. Best we can do is prepare before we go and don't give them any more power than they have already been given. Encourage the ones that show respect and leave the ones' that do not. Leave negative reviews on Google and spread the word when it comes to doctors and stigma - any front line worker and stigma.

Wishing you all the best.

Re: Doctors and why they take us for granted

I understand what your going through @SCOOBY87 .

I've had 3 falls in the last few weeks and instead of looking for the issue why my leg gives way they have said I should get a walking stick.

I tell you I'm done with it all if I don't get a decent response from this pain clinic Monday well I'm not long for this world.

I am sick of living in pain and sick of being dismissed

Re: Doctors and why they take us for granted

@Former-Member well said and I couldn't agree more.

Not sure where you are but I have a relative in the upper Hunter that has suffered with mental issues and it has been surprising how much assistance he has recieved from his gp and specialist a few hours drive away.i realise these are not common instances but it is nice to know that some out there do what they can.

My gp has been good to me in the past but he doesn't know what to do with my condition thus why I have been referred to a pain clinic.

But from the talks I've already had with them they seem dismissive of what I've got to say already.

Even the fact I've had 3 falls recently and instead of looking why my leg goes from under me they told me to get a walking stick.

I'd prefer they fix the issue.

All they are concerned with is lowering my pain meds .

I do struggle mentally with this processes but not diagnosed with any issues thankfully and I'm glad I'm not as I do not envy those who are seeking treatment for any mental health issues as there is very little help for them in my area and I'm sure that is the case state wide

Re: Doctors and why they take us for granted

Well I attended the pain clinic and some of it was helpful .

Of course they want to lower my tabs and are going to teach me how to live with pain and exercises and well I guess you know the rest.

The only issue I had was it took me 3hrs to travel 150klm there and after sitting for 4 hrs it took me 4.5 hrs to get home .

I was in so much pain the next day I went to Dr and ER only to be told another ruptured disc .

I am not going back to clinic the pain of the travel is not worth it and now if I have to go back for more surgery well let's say I just won't be doing that

I'm sick of living in pain and it's time to say enough .

Sorry for the rant and thanks for support in past

Re: Doctors and why they take us for granted

@tyme thank you for your concerns.i appreciate the support.

I've just been told after a week of pain that the latest CT scan shows the degeneration but that it's not enough to warrant any further treatment.

So now im just lying on bed can't walk to back yard without the pain growing to excruciating levels and all they can say is that they don't want or that the outcomes of surgery would be of no benefit to me.

Well I just don't know how much longer I can do this for .

And doctors just don't get it !!!

I have been doing a survey every 3 months for Monash uni .the orthopeadic surgeon that made me like I am asked me to do them as a way of getting feedback and improve outcomes.

I asked the young lady that did the survey where I could see results and give me some examples of where the data has helped.

Surprise no changes have ever happened and despite my complaints the surgeon has not once made any attempt to discuss the situation.

I'm afraid I now put them all in the same boat they aren't in it to help people they are in it for the money.
