Worried about my son being taken away. (TW - mentions self-harm and suicide)

Worried about my son being taken away. (TW - mentions self-harm and suicide)

Hi all,

So I recently discovered that despite my efforts my Mr 10 knows alot more about my mental health stuff than I would like him to.

Well the school has noticed he is struggling a little bit and have asked if it ok for him to talk to the school counsellor. I of course said yes because I don't want to deny him what he needs. But I'm worried because I know that when I talked to the school counsellor when I was young about my parents drugs and my mums self harm and multiple suicide attempts and my perverted uncle who was living with us, the school counsellor called children services which lead to my siblings and I going into foster care for the 3/4 time i dont know was in the system alot.

While I don't do drugs like I don't even smoke and drink like 2 or 3 times a year if that, and except for his grandparents house (hubby's parents) he doesn't stay at anyone's house and I don't let people stay at our house not even family cause honestly family is what let me down the most. I also don't let him walk to and from school alone and I stay with him when he goes to friends houses to play. I know I bubble wrap him (my sisters words) but to me it's better than the alternatives that could happen.

The thing is I do selfharm and once or twice he has seen the marks but I usually brush it of as something else when he asks about, and although I thought I would never get that low again since I had my son, I recently had a suicide attempt and he was told I was just really sick and that the hospital in our town ran out of the medicine I needed so they had to fly me to a different hospital. But the other day while he was talking to his cousins through the xbox he told them I went to the hospital because.... blurted out what I did but said I did it accidentally. I was floored and asked him where he heard that but he said that some of the 'precaution steps' my hubby and I were taking were similar to when his great nan did accidentally did the same thing but because of dementia and the same or similar precautions were put in place for her.

Now I'm worried that he's going to tell the counsellor all this and children services will take him. I'm not gonna tell him he can't talk about it especially if he does need to. But given what I went through in foster care I don't want him to suffer the same but I can't protect him from that and to be honest I don't think I would mentally cope if he was to be taken from my hubby and my care.

I don't really know what to do at the moment.

Hi @Little_Leopard, @tyme, @Former-Member, @Former-Member and all who pass by.

@Little_Leopard, I was going to do a reply to your latest message but I can't see it now, just that you replied and tagged me in it. Would have replied sooner but have been dealing with a few things. Hope you are doing OK.

I finally got through the froms so my son can see the school counsellor I don't remember it being so complicated when I was a kid. I didn't even tell my parents that I was talking to the counsellor they found out when 2 police officers and a social worker turned up on our doorstep one afternoon.

But anyway I got through filling out the 2 8page forms so even though it's the last week of school for the term he will do a start up session during the week.

@Twilightsomniac

At least it’s all done now.

If you are feeling anxious maybe you can go in for the first session and talk about anything you feel you need to say.
might take some of the uncertainty away.

Heya @Twilightsomniac, well done on getting through all of those forms! One step at a time ❤️

It sounds like your it was unexpected when the social worker and police arrived and that your parents know now. Sounds like it was a bit of a shock, is that right? ❤️

How are you feeling at the moment?

@Little_Leopardand @Former-Member,

Yes definitely glad I managed to get through the forms, filling out forms is not an easy task for me and i often require help.

Mr 10 is a little apprehensive about it too since he was told he would be seeing the counsellor.

He asked me what he's supposed to tell them as he's not use to talking to adults apart from his teacher and parents.

I told him whatever he wants to talk about and that he can tell them anything but if he doesn't want to talk that's OK too.

Not really sure how this will work out.

And yes my parents were really surprised when the social worker and police showed up, I personally believe my mother still detests me because of that and other things.

She told my siblings that we were being taken away from her because I told lies about her, though except for the 2 youngest who really didn't understand, they didn't believe her.

Hi @Former-Member, @tyme, @Little_Leopard, @Former-Member and everyone else passing through,

Mr 10 had his initial session yesterday, he came home from school said that they started with asking him some questions which apparently lasted few minutes because they asked him what makes him feel better when he's sad and then they couldn't get him to stop talking about his xbox games because he said that after he finished explaining all his games it was time to go back to class.

I'm sure though they have some questions for me about one of his games where he said he likes to create a dinosaur paddock with herbivores and then put a trex in and see who long it takes for the trex to get all the dinosaurs in the paddock.

heya @Twilightsomniac they might have some questions, are you worried about that?

I know it's really common for young kids to be interested in these kinds of activities. I remember when I was a kid I used to do terrible things to the characters in a game called the Sims (the computer game if you know it!). Even at 9 or 10 I knew it was game! To this day I still use video games to help me cope 😊

It sounds like to me, that your son has some great ideas for how to cope and I hope the counsellors can see that!

@Twilightsomniac

That is typical kid behaviour. Heaps of kids do that kind of stuff with role play and online games. It’s normal role playing behaviour. Only a problem if they are aggressive or resentful in real life and doing stuff like hurting pets. Then it’s a cause for concern.

It’s fine that he only spoke about his game. Totally normal and it’s a healthy way for him to “get a feel” of what this therapist is like and if he feels comfortable with her.

He can talk about what ever he likes. No stress.

If the therapist is good and he feels that comfortable then he will eventually talk about anything on his mind that is bothering him. No need to push. It’s about establishing a relationship and trust first.

I know this must be so hard for you to do but hearing your story has bought my faith back in people.
I am surrounded by toxic family who do not put their kids well-being first and I am forced watch it’s all play out in a bad way.

We have been forced to drastically distance ourselves from family because of this.

But you have re ignited my faith! Your love and want for your child to be happy and healthy is very apparent to me.

Thank you for being a light to me.

I hope you are feeling good and things are going well for you 😊
