Friends

Hi all. Has anyone else found that their friends don’t really check in with them, in regards to how they are going? I understand that people have busy lives. I have always been the friend that checks in on my friends and reach out when they are having a hard time. I opened up to a few friends about my recent mental health diagnosis, and they all said the right things at the beginning, but then have gone quiet, only one has checked in on me. Tbh, it feels like a bit of a reality check. Like I’m there for them, but it’s clear they can’t reciprocate. Even my siblings who I shared it with, have not checked in on me. Really I’ve had one friend and my Mum (aside from my amazing partner) who have checked in on me. One other friend checked in on me, I said I was struggling. They offered to catch up, and then when I suggested a couple of times, I’ve heard nothing back.

I feel like there’s this conversation of encouraging people with poor mental health to speak up, so people can support you. But I did, and many aren’t.

Re: Friends

@L12 I'm glad to hear that there was a reason they weren't checking on you, even if the reason is not all that good. And glad one asked how you were 👍

That's a good step in the right direction 🙂

Re: Friends

hi @L12 and welcome

i can relate to how your feeling in regards to friends. it has been like this most of my life too.
i often feel as if im always the one giving but no one checks in on me.
like right now i have a really bad case of covid and its really made me unwell, ive let a couple of people know because id been around them etc but not one has checked in to see how im going etc either but when theyve been unwell or having any issues im usually the first one to ask if they need anything.

theres a saying that goes 'always check on the quiet friend or the strong friend as they are the ones that struggle alone'
i can very much relate to that saying, i have a feeling you might too?

im sorry that youve reached out and its been silent, i do understand how hard that is.

Re: Friends

Thanks @outlander that is spot on. I’m really sorry no one has checked on you with having covid, that can be very isolating and disappointing that no one did. when people know what’s going on and they still don’t check in, it’s really really hurtful.
How are you going?

Yep, that’s it hey. Having poor mental health has made me realise that there is this onus on the person who is unwell to speak up. And very little on their friends or those close to them to check in. I hear in the media “oh I wish they’d reached out to me”, well maybe you should have reached out to them??

Re: Friends

i still have covid, ive still got another 4 days in isolation but if im still as sick as i am now i wont be able to leave iso or be able to return to work or do anything really.

yes i agree, there seems to be alot on the person struggling and if its their responsibility to reach out. it is to an extent of course as you have to want to have help but some people struggle to reach out or when they do they arent met with supportive arms. i know its hard for others who dont experience mental health issues to understand too though.

maybe you could join something like a mental health support group to make some other friends who understand mental health?

Re: Friends

I have definitely had this experience but I think it is wonderful that there are places like this for you and I.
