Loneliness

Loneliness

  • I was listening to ABC RN live radio this morning about how difficult it can be for young people to make friends. The same is for old people, in fact, I think it is harder as you get older. They talked about shallow conversations and deep conversations. People who had deep conversations were more likely to feel connected and enjoy the experience more. I have found that people are scared to have deep conversations and people are more interested in their mobile phones. I feel very alone most days. How do you feel? Is it easy or hard for you to start a conversation?

Re: Loneliness

Hi @Max33 🙂

Yes, I am terribly alone, too. I don't really have anyone I can have conversations with. That's not to say that there aren't people in physical proximity to me. But they aren't the sort of people I can have any sort of meaningful conversation with. We're just too differant. And even when my social circle was much wider, that was still the underlying problem for me; the people were just too differant.

We didn't get one another, we couldn't understand one another. And the deeper we dug, the more confused and disturbed we became with what we discovered.

Yes, deep conversations are essential for the sense of connection we need to alleviate loneliness. But we need to first be placed in proximity to sufficiently compatable people, so that those deep dives endear ourselves to our community, and vice-versa, rather then serving as a poignant reminder of just hope hopelessly contrary we are to one another.

That's just my opinion, though. No doubt many others will disagree.🙂

Re: Loneliness

Hey @Max33 I used to listen to ABC a lot before I got married. Now mostly listen to it in the car, but not in the car much these days .... even my motor mechanic, who did my service today ... noticed the miles were way down.

Yep it seems hard to make good connections these days, but then sometimes things can roll along ... all depends ...

Welcome to the forum

I agree so much with some of your post I will quote you @chibam "Yes, deep conversations are essential for the sense of connection we need to alleviate loneliness. Hello @Appleblossum
Yes, it is not easy to find compatible people. it can be stressful being with people who you have no connection with.

Re: Loneliness

@Historylover I think there are so many lonely people. It does not matter how many people you meet, you need to be interested in similar things to have a meaningful conversation and not feel lonely with someone.

Re: Loneliness

Hello @Max33. I'm alone, too. Totally alone. Here is the only place I get meaningful conversation and it's just not often enough. I don't bother too much starting conversations as people usually find a reason not to like me. I try to keep my opinions to myself, but that doesn't work either as they get to control the 'conversation'. I'm always looking for the Goldilocks zone. I hope I find it soon.

I hope you're doing alright. I send best wishes.

Hello @Historylover

Loneliness

It seems like we all want conversation we can relate to which eases our Loneliness. Occasionally the right person comes along and we don't feel so lonely. Loneliness is a part of the human condition. It is a modern phenomenon. We should be living in tribes with extended family. That way of living has become extinct. Today we are alone in a crowd and in other situations.

Re: Loneliness

I agree with you @Max33. Loneliness is an epidemic, for all ages, it seems; and regarding society's de-tribalisation–I thoroughly agree.

I tried for years to restructure the family I was born into, many of whom lived cheek-by-jowl in the same street, and more distant relatives peopled the suburb and surrounds. All had been wonderful in our childhoods, but rivalry that would curl your hair took over soon after. That devolved into those who were allowed to win and those who weren't. Those who could do anything and not be thought the less of, and those who weren't. Those who could succeed and those who couldn't. It became an established pecking order and no-one dared to move out of order.

It destroyed my birth family to the point that we are all alienated. It's a sad indictment on modern society that we allow this to happen. Now, in our society, from newborn, children are in childcare, our elders are in elderly care, in the middle are those scrambling to get one-up on the Jones at all costs, divorce is rife and children are damaged by it. People's relatives are couch surfing or sleeping on the streets. Others turn to crime because they can't get a fair go. And then there's our lot who suffer mood and personality disorders as a result of our experiences. If others can't see that our society has broken down, they must wear blinkers. And it all traces back to the state of families.

I hope you have a good day today, @Max33. I'm planning to. Take care.

Hello @Historylover

  • You have thought about family a lot like I have recently. A friend told me to embrace the good and the bad and enjoy every day as if it was your last. It would be easier if I still had family. I try to forget the past and focus on helping others. I am not able to do very much so I become depressed. I was glad to receive your reply and that you intend to have a good day. Take care and enjoy the present moment @Historylover because people here care about you.

Re: Loneliness

I stumbled across the opportunity to further my education for free last year, @Max33. It's something I have always wanted to do–to go to university (online), but I always thought it above my ability. I said to someone recently that I didn't make the most of my education, but the truth is my education didn't make the most of me.

I began treatment for depression with a psychiatrist many years ago and he tapped into my ability and made sure I pursued it. When my family broke down and I was isolated/abandoned (maliciously), I ventured into the library to be amongst people, to again feel human. I discovered books while there, and began educating myself. Eventually I bought medical text books from the university and furthered it more. I've never looked back. I like to think that nothing will ever change my path now. It's challenging and allows me to feel fulfilled, achieving (although still lonely...can't have everything, I guess, not immediately anyway. That's still a work in progress).

Do you have interests @Max33? Is there something you've always wanted to try, to learn? Whenever I'm stumped about something, I always go to youtube. It's a wonderful source of information. You can teach yourself anything with its assistance.

I still have days when I am very low, but for the most part, things are improving. I hope you have had an alright day, at least. I send good wishes.

People here care about you, too, @Max33.

Re Loneliness

I am glad you have found an interest you like and can further your education. It opens up a whole new world for you and I wish you well with it.

Did you know that you can watch medical university lectures on U tube? I looked up a medical term and there were 12 lectures on the topic. I still haven't finished viewing all of them so they are saved on my U tube library to view later.

I have a lot of interests intellectually but I cannot engage in the practical interests and hobbies I used to have that took my mind off my worries.

I hope you have a good day and send you good wishes.
