Something’s not right

Struggling: TW suicide

Struggling: TW suicide

I have been struggling a lot lately with suicidal thoughts. It’s become a daily occurrence and it’s been really overwhelming to cope. I am safe right but having to fight this is very exhausting. I feel so trapped, I am tired of living in pain, fear and shame. I feel like a burden to people and unimportant.

@tyme just a thought that popped up. Since the counsellor is referred by the HOPE team. Do you think the counsellor will also know other services too? I still have a good 4 sessions to go. Will try to get on the psychiatrist ASAP too, just need to confirm he is taking new patients, will try to call again Monday, it seems that not all offices were open last week. Can ask about waitlists and being on the cancellation list too.

@creative_writer . The counsellor will probably know less services than what the HOPE team would. But there's definitely no harm in asking. I think it's a good idea to ask.

@tyme true. The acute community mental health team might know more options and might be able to provide short term support. The HOPE team suggested another service that had a few month waiting period, but when I spoke to my psych she wasn’t sure whether it would be the right service for me.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

The 'right' service... only thing is to give it a go. If you are voluntary, you can always withdraw.

I hope you don't have to wait to be an involuntary patient. In my most acute phase, I have been an involuntary patient in the high care unit and it is NOT nice. @creative_writer . I've also been in ICU due to close experiences. I really want to save you from this.

This is why I became a peer worker. I want to give people hope - knowing that someone as close to death as I was can recover. I know you can too.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

Please know that I say this in love and care for you @creative_writer but you really need to jump at any chance you can be offered to get the help that you need… no matter what it may look like. And if that means you need to start putting in some boundaries with your folks to put your mental health first, then perhaps that’s what needs to happen.
I will echo was @tyme has previously said in that I am sure you folks would prefer to see you getting some help than to find you no longer here.- I would absolutely hate for it to come to that.
you may need to ruffle some feathers to put yourself first.
again I say this out of care. I totally understand that it is hard and you don’t want to hurt your folks or go against them and be disrespectful. But you are an adult. And you have choices.

@tyme it is voluntary service, so always possible to withdraw at any point. I really want to avoid involuntary treatment. I think that’s what my parents feared would happen if I reached out for further support. My mum was super anxious when I was with the HOPE team, but getting that support really did help. I have never qualified for involuntary treatment either. The most I have stayed in hospital is short stay. Honestly, it sounds really scary to be an involuntary patient.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

@Bow I’ll think it over and try to come up with a solution. It’s been hard placing boundaries when my relationship has been so enmeshed with them. I was never really given the opportunity to fully separate. A part of me longs to break free, and the only way to do that is to get married, but I haven’t found anyone I want to marry yet.

Re: Struggling: TW suicide

Most definitely scary! It's painful. It's restricting. It's somewhat inhumane. Yet I know it has it's place because I was certainly NOT safe. @creative_writer .

So yes. Services want to work WITH you, not against you. If you willingly seek support, they will very rarely put you as an involuntary patient.

I really also agree with @Bow - I guess we've both been down that path, eh? Hugs to you @Bow . I appreciate you also sharing your experiences.

TW: involuntary stays

involuntary is scary @creative_writer ive been there many many times. My recent battle with my mental health, the longest I’ve stayed is a few weeks (usually ended up on a medical ward due to my eating disorder and that takes time to get to a point of being able to go home) but in a psych ward involuntarily only for a week. But back in 2004-2005, I stayed involuntary for 3 months and was constantly going before the magistrate to be reviewed and have my stay extended. It was horrible!! You walk through those doors and they close them behind you and you really have no say when you will come back out again.
