Help

Hey there everyone. I'm a complete newby here. Feel a bit awkward sharing my situation. I've been with my current wife for over 30 years. We have 2 beautiful daughters together and have been through alot of ups and downs. Things changed dramatically when my wife and 2 daughters were diagnosed with lymes disease. Over time my wife has become more and more angry and abusive towards me. Most of the time I honestly don't even know what I have done wrong or what I said that was wrong. I'm at a point where any day I'm not working, my wife will find a reason to pull me up and lecture me for literally hours and hours saying the same thing over and over. I always apologise and try to settle the situation so I can make some sense of what is actually happening. I often say that I know I have done the wrong thing even though I don't even know what that is most of the time. She has become completely obsessed with an online end times prophet and constantly expects me and our daughters to do everything right in the eyes of God. It gets sooo confusing as she brings up things from the past I have done wrong but adds extra things that never happened to these past failings I have made. My daughters agree that she spends most days telling me that im doing the wrong thing and that im an emotional abuser. She sceams calls me names I won't repeat here. She constantly points out Everything that me and the girls are doing wrong and spends day after day doing nothing but lecturing. There is literally no way I can try and talk to her about anything as she loses the plot and calls me an abuser. I really Ned some perspective from an objective perspective. Please help.

@Rodriguez

Thirty years is a long time to live with someone. Is your wife open to any couples counselling?

Often people who attach to 'end of times stuff' do not go for it, but it is worth trying.

Sorry I cannot give you an objective perspective, we all have our bias, that is oftne why people refer to God as an objective being, but then others bring in his "loving side" over the judgmental side.

Most people try and do their best. It would also be hard for your daughters. Does your wife ever have any insight about how extreme her outbursts are?

Take care

Hi @Rodriguez

Welcome! I'm so glad you found us and well done on reaching out for support. I'm one of the peer support workers on these forums.

I'm so sorry to hear that things aren't going well right now, it sounds like such a difficult and challenging situation. Especially as you and your wife been together for so long in what sounds like a great relationship. For things to suddenly change so much must be so awful for you to cope with.

I don't know a lot about lyme disease except that it can have lifelong effects for those who get it.

I recently listened to a few podcasts where they interviewed families and friends of those who have gone down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole as it sounds like has happened with your wife. It was so difficult for these people to see their loved ones go down this path. They felt helpless, which is how I'm imagining you might feel right now.

I'm wondering if you've thought about seeing a counsellor/psychologist to discuss the impact that your wife's new way of thinking has had on you? It sounds like you're a very devoted partner and will do anything to help support your wife, but the situation must really be taking a toll on your mental health and that's completely understandable. I was also wondering if you've reached out to family and friends whom you may be able to trust with such a tricky situation?

Yeah I tend to play it down. I always do the glass half full attitude. But yeah I'm really struggling atm. I'm doing 12 hr shifts in the cross river rail and then coming home to being basically told I'm a useless abusive piece of shit. She abuses me about not talking to our girls but how can I talk to them when I'm being criticised for hours at a time. I'm not one to give up but it's getting pretty close. I really don't have much left. Thanks for responding. It really easy alot to me. I dont see anyone my family anymore because I gestate to feel guilty for spending time with them. Have a good day . 😊

Hi @Rodriguez

Welcome to the forums. It sounds like you’re in a difficult situation. There is a fine line with end times stuff from it being interesting to becoming ridiculous. Couples counselling could help but the other action that could help is trying to behave differently to your wife.

If she is angry try filling your home with pleasant music, scented flowers and thank her for her feedback without losing it.

Good luck.

Re: Help

Thanks for responding. No she definitely won't do any type of councilling as she thinks they are from the devil. I grew up in a Christian home but never had this sort of judgement and put downs. My mother was a very devout Christian but not judgemental at all. She was a nurse for 45 years and then volunteered helping the elderly after she retired. Just don't know how someone can twist Christian beliefs into such hurtful judgemental words and actions.

Oh that's not good at all! You must be so exhausted and at the end of your patience. I can totally understand.

There's some really good articles around at the moment about people who have loved ones who have fallen for conspiracy theories. I had a quick search just by putting into google "families of people who believe in conspiracy theories". Some of them may help.

Please reach out whenever you need to, we are always here for you. And also take care of yourself. Do something nice for yourself when you can!

Re: Help

No this is a very different situation. You see we have been together for over 30 years. She claims that I have been an emotional abuser for that entire time together. To me if someone was emotionally abusing me for 30 years I would be long gone. The only reason I'm still here is because of our daughters. We have not had sex since the 19th of December 2020. She thinks that sex will bring demonic entities into our house. She literally blames me for everything and doesn't hide the fact that she is,never wrong in the way she handles situations. I will be blunt here. I am not exaggerating she will literally lecture me and or our daughters for 6 to 8 hours a day and then blame me for us being stuck at home. There is no reasoning with her at all. Just anger and hatred.

Hi @Rodriguez

I'm so sorry this is happening. The more you open up about the situation the more I am concerned about emotional abuse towards you. I'll put the contact details for the domestic violence line below to reach out to. I'll also add the MensLine which can offer you support. No one deserves to be spoken to like the way you are. It must be taking a toll mentally each day.

Re: Help

Thanks for that. It definitely has and continues to take a toll on me. I have looked at those sites before but I want to remain anonymous. Can't risk any more stress on my girls. I will be ok. Just will have to work out what to do with the girls. I have done time in prison when I was 19 years old so pretty much no matter what I won't have any kind of access to my daughters. They were pretty serious convictions which were later downgraded when I appealed with a QC. Very expensive. Long story!!!!!! Just don't need any more stress or drama. Thanks so much for your concern and support. It means alot to me. It seems that there is alot of support for women in these situations but very little for men. It's pretty hard to even reach out at all being a bloke. I'm a concretor so it's even more of a sensitive subject. Thanks again. God bless!!!!

See a lawyer and ask about access to your daughters. Just preliminary enquiries.I dont believe God likes some of the more outrageous stuff out there... but it dose not stop people invokiung his name in moral upmanship, rather than spreading charity and goodwill. Maybe there is a way the courts would look at your situation afresh now. Paying for past mistakes should not last a lifetime, though ... I know sadly it seems that is what can happen.

If you want to speak to someone directly press @ and a dropdown menu with profiles comes up.

Even the tough need a rest and a place to call home.
