Something’s not right

My friend was abused - help

My friend was abused - help

I have just discovered that an old friend had been sexually abused when he was younger. He has only hinted at it - & said he doesn't want to talk or think about it.
But I think I knew about it back then. I didn't know what 'it' was. I had no knowledge or understanding of pedophilia then. But I knew something wasn't right.
This may sound selfish and mean (although I don't mean it that way). On this site, I have spoken to others who have suffered from this type of violence - & I would offer a comforting word, an ear to listen, etc.
But wow - this is just so different. This is a friend. This is someone I loved. This is someone I would never want to see hurt or in pain.
I feel guilt for not knowing what was happening. I feel I SHOULD have known. But I know that is not logical. I wish that I had of told an adult - that I thought something was 'odd'. But I didn't.
This old friend from 30 years ago & I, have just found each other in the past few months - via the Internet. So we haven't met in person again yet.
I know the help lines and the services that are available. I think I know the help he needs. But really. He doesn't want to talk about or remember. I am respecting this. But what do I do now? And please don't say - just be there for him.
I feel broken. I feel useless. And I feel guilty because I'm talking about me and how I feel.
I just wish - so many things.
I wish I could take it all away. Stop his pain. But I can't.

What I mean by, a wall up, my emotions just switch off. One minute I feel the hurt etc., then I feel almost numb. (No emotion at all).
I hope it works next time. 😊👍🌻

Re: My friend was abused - help

@Former-Member. It sounds like this has been a very useful coping mechanism that used to work well for you - but has now become an unconscious mechanism. It may take a bit to retrain your brain to not 'flip the switch off'.
& I guess the more you work on those feelings / emotions - whether through EMDR or some homework techniques - you will have longer periods of feelings & less 'lights out'.
I think you have already made huge changes and improvements to get this far already.
Congratulations!
It will come.

Hey @utopia
With those sort of problems the hardest part is thAt unless he talks to you about it there is nothing you can do to help besides be there and be trust worthy

Thank you @ScienceBoy101. I'm hoping that he will know me and trust me enough to know that I just want to be there for him. I'll listen. I'll cry. And I'll just be there for him.
It's painful even thinking of the horror he went through. I'll offer no judgment (there is nothing for him to be judged on - it's never the victims fault). And I'll support him as much as he will let me.

Re: My friend was abused - help

Anxiety and emotions have raised their head again. Not sleeping much. Just keep going over in my head - all the conversation scenarios that may occur when my old friend visits.
Still haven't had confirmation from him that he'll be coming on the long weekend.
I'm frustrated because I have no control at all over any of this. He needs to set the date - I understand that. I'm just not sure that I can stand having to wait much longer.
I have things that I need to get off my chest - from back then. And I can't seem to focus on anything else.
Almost feel like it's becoming obsessive thoughts and that's not part of my MI. Nor is this normally a part of my personality.
Feel like I'm going 'nuts'.

Hi @utopia
Your first 3 words describe your now. Is it worth going to see your GP? Some short-term med might help you.
