My friend was abused - help

My friend was abused - help

I have just discovered that an old friend had been sexually abused when he was younger. He has only hinted at it - & said he doesn't want to talk or think about it.
But I think I knew about it back then. I didn't know what 'it' was. I had no knowledge or understanding of pedophilia then. But I knew something wasn't right.
This may sound selfish and mean (although I don't mean it that way). On this site, I have spoken to others who have suffered from this type of violence - & I would offer a comforting word, an ear to listen, etc.
But wow - this is just so different. This is a friend. This is someone I loved. This is someone I would never want to see hurt or in pain.
I feel guilt for not knowing what was happening. I feel I SHOULD have known. But I know that is not logical. I wish that I had of told an adult - that I thought something was 'odd'. But I didn't.
This old friend from 30 years ago & I, have just found each other in the past few months - via the Internet. So we haven't met in person again yet.
I know the help lines and the services that are available. I think I know the help he needs. But really. He doesn't want to talk about or remember. I am respecting this. But what do I do now? And please don't say - just be there for him.
I feel broken. I feel useless. And I feel guilty because I'm talking about me and how I feel.
I just wish - so many things.
I wish I could take it all away. Stop his pain. But I can't.

@Redraw. I wouldn't ridicule you or anyone else on here. And it would be good to hear all perspectives. That's how I will learn.
But it is up to you how much you wish to share. I will not judge you.

@Kurra. My friend will be opening the dialog - not me. He is very intuitive and I've explained it's his decision with what he is comfortable discussing.
But I am going to bring all of this up with my psychologist this week - so I can know how best to approach things - so that both of us are as comfortable as possible. So I'll definitely take your advice on board & my psychologist and just allow the conversation to flow how it does. We have a weekend, so I'm not going to jump in and demand answers. Yes I would like some. But ultimately it all comes down to what he is willing to share.

Re: My friend was abused - help

When you look at sexual abuse with males it is never going to be accepted by the individual or societally, because it takes everything from you, masculinity, identity, strength, innocence, trust, faith, hope, worth, it takes away everything we are expected to be, there will never be the same strength, confidence, or anything else that others have and to talk about it brings all the losses all that was taken boiling to the surface, you mentioned you should have said or done something now that's, one the whole hindsight thing, and two would it or could it of helped or would it of been brushed off like many other things. Also the same thing affects him he could or would never of said anything, but his not being able to protect himself to defend himself and that perceived weakness likely tears at his mind everyday

Re: My friend was abused - help

@Redraw. Your response is how I've been imagining he has/is feeling. He has learnt some tools that assist him. And he has mentioned that it would be good to talk to a friend. So I will listen and I will not push and I would never judge him or think less of him as a human, as a man. But I understand what you are saying - that he may feel less of - or worried about perceived judgements.
Hopefully he will recognise that I am the same person I was 30 years ago & always willing to listen to him.
I really do thank you for your advice. I think a mans perspective and knowledge on this issue is one that we need to hear.
I appreciate your words of wisdom and will keep them in mind.
Best wishes to you.

Re: My friend was abused - help

As humans we are apex predators, and as such that has been taken away all that inbuilt identity............humanity, making it harder to acquire such attributes that will draw a mate, the individual has become prey rather than predator and as such faces the world feeling that's all they are, people are a danger, talking about it means exposing a wound a weakness to another predator, and in those situations we know what happens in predatory species. It's nice that you are going to provide what you can, so many have no people like that and sit relying on the only person they can 'themselves' because no one else cares, And are treated as if we are weak or nothing.

Re: My friend was abused - help

@Redraw. I think my friend will only discuss what he feels comfortable with. And I think he knows that I'm a caring, empathetic person. I have been honest with him about some of my childhood - re: my dads undiagnosed PTSD. I've also told him of my diagnosis & that I won't accept stigma from others about my MI.
Yes - predators. Even with the best life we will experience lies, untrustworthy behavior etc. Add to that the violent abuse & it must be amazingly hard to trust others and to accept a listening ear, an unjudgemental response.
I'm ready for my session with my psychologist tomorrow. I have my questions ready. And I believe my psychologist can advise me further - as you and others have done here - how best to be supportive without overstepping or creating further hurt.
Your advice @Redraw has been invaluable. Thank you

Re: My friend was abused - help

Hi @utopia 😊
That is very sad about your friend. Sexual abuse is very difficult to get over. Your friend is very lucky to have you as a friend.
It's a step in the right direction for healing for him. It sounds like he might confide in you.
Talking about it will bring some healing for him.
You are very caring and understanding.
I better try and sleep. Very tired today.😴
Are you feeling any better? 💗

Re: My friend was abused - help

Thank you @Former-Member. I'm the lucky one. I'm thankful that he wants to meet and discuss this face to face. There is a history here of him being my first love - & therefore - first heartache. And he is aware that I also need to talk. That I also need to find closure.
So I expect it is going to be an emotional meeting for many reasons. But I'm also hoping that we can share some laughs about our old mates etc.
And I'm thankful. Just thankful for this chance.

Re: My friend was abused - help

Thank you @Former-Member. Just got back from my session with my psychologist. Early morning I dropped in a copy of the correspondence between my old friend and I (all identifying details blacked out) & also 3 pages of questions that I would like him to help me work through. He read it all before my 10.30 appointment - so when I got there, we jumped straight into it.
He spent an hr and a half with me - answering every single question in a way that just made so much sense. The guy is a genius. I feel so relaxed and I know I can handle whatever happens now. Feel happy as if floating on a cloud. So I'm as ready as I can be.
(Feel sorry for the client who had to wait 30 minutes for me to finish my session).
Got home and went to put the notes / questions away - when I noticed that he had written side notes on most of ny questions - so I can remind myself.
There really are some great therapists out there.
