Sport can help

Sport can help

Hi, it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to write. Life is full on for me at the best of times and dealing with anxiety and depression on top of it doesn’t help. I have 5 days a week taken up with work and looking after my grandsons then one day a week I have my grandson here and one day a week I ride. Sport for me is a saviour and my way of relaxing and completely stepping away from life. I was never good at sport at school, I’m the kid that came last even though I tried. Later on in life I became a gym junkie and ran and it overtook everything I did. That wore off then my daughter gave me her one year old purebred husky who is now just over 11. Over these last few weeks he’s had two major surgeries removing 3 cysts 4 tumours and 8 teeth despite receiving the best care and food you can get. He looks like a patchwork quilt and I’m devastated. Along with him I have a horse that my girls got me for my 50th birthday. My daughter taught me to ride and it took a long time and a few serious accidents on her horse before I got the hang of it but finally one day it clicked and I found my sport, the thing I was actually okay at. My days out trail riding really save me. I have to concentrate and just think of us. He gives the best cuddles and listens when I talk and makes me feel free. These two animals are my saving grace from my crazy life. I wish I could say things are better for me but they’re not. Life is still a constant struggle where I’ll feel okay then a few hours later be down and sad and exhausted only to pick up in the afternoon. How many others go through this circle of life and how do you cope? I have no one to talk too as I don’t have friends by choice and I have a crumbling marriage and 3 busy adult children. Please if you have any advice that’s helped you I’d love to hear it. Take care Anna xx

Hey @Anna53,

Thank you for posting about your experiences with animals and your mental health challenges here on the Forums!

Your horse sounds like a great way to pass a day on the weekend and enjoy some time riding together. Lovely that your girls got the horse for your birthday, what a great gift!! I'm sorry to hear that your purebred husky recently had these procedures and is a bit patchworked at the moment. Hopefully, the husky's recovery goes well and is up and about again soon!

I wanted to respond to your question about the circle of life you described with a constant struggle and up and down moments. I have had similar experiences too and resonate with wanting to find an answer to it. The Forums are a great place to ask that question and in the peer community here at Sane, I'm sure that many people experience something similar in their mental health journey.

I will tag a few community guides and members here and hopefully, we can start a conversation to answer your question.

Re: Sport can help

Lifes ups and downs can be rough eh. Sometimes it’s up and down each day…. Or sometimes it’s numerous times throughout the day. You never know what each hour is going to be sometimes. Can certainly relate @Anna53

The forums are a great place to connect with people or just simple to unload. I often come and just write…. And unload stuff that is in my head. I often feel lighter afterwards. I’m glad you have some pets that are helpful.

Hello @Anna53 and welcome to the forum!

Having a horse and learning to ride at 50 is a great achievement so we’ll done! I think horses provide a measure of healing to our mental health.

I am sorry you have anxiety and depression as I can certainly relate to both of those. Sport helps me a lot too but I also think having a caring GP, psychologist and psychiatrist have been essential to assist my recovery and I hope you have access to these.

Take care 💙
