Problems with my boss

Problems with my boss

This sounds like a different post to many but I have mental health issues

I have crohns which is thankfully in remission. Was diagnosed in 1993. Not much info back then. Crohns patients do get anxiety & depression its part of the treatment plan these days

5yrs ago I suffered a perforated small bowel due in part to my Crohns. Emergency surgery, twice, Sepis a spell in ICU. I can out of this alive but my anxiety depression was sky high & I had developed PTSD (diagnosed)

i got back into full time work last year. A job I enjoy Its demanding & enjoyable at the same time.

My boss is very distant with all of us. Doesnt tell anyone anything, info drips out from who knows where. We find out secondhand and put the pieces together

No team meetings he wanders around with a scowl on his face. Stays in his office most of the time.

Our family has suffered mum in care our dad died a year ago. My anxiety /Depression was under control, but came back big time. Its affected my work i make mistakes. Am not normally like this. i pride myself in my work ethic

i tried to tel my boss am having family issues. that I was seeing a psychologist. his reply was 'well no need to go that far" and a grunt. Didnt take his eyes of his computer screen !!!!

The folks i work with are with are good. They know am struggling, they help me out. The boss is distant I wonder if he only focussed on the job being done to exclusion of his employees & our wellbeing

We had an employee start back after a work place injury. This person is disruptive works on chaos and its affecting us. This person has the support of the boss.

one of my colleagues has tried twice to tell the boss this person is abrasive bossy a micro manager. Boss isnt listening perhaps not unsurprisingly.

Its affecting my anxiety and my PTSD am seriously thinking about moving on am in my late 50's so jobs are already hard to come by let alone ageism

I like my current job but am conflicted & confused

Do I try again to tell my boss? or wasting my time with him

Like to hear your comments

Sorry to have written so much but anything less would be half the story

Thank you for reading. RR

@Ricardorider ,

Thank you for your post.

I somehow feel your post is relatable to many. Unfortunately, the points you have raised are not uncommon where staff welfare is next to nothing.

I've been in such workplaces. The hardest part was knowing I hated my job, and the build up of anxiety each morning. I BREATHED through each morning. I debriefed with those I could trust and this made a difference. It didn't mean I didn't have anxiety. It didn't mean I loved my job. But it made it bearable.

You've raised a really good point. That after a certain age, people feel 'trapped' in their job. They are deemed 'too old' to move on. I'm not sure if this is of interest to you, but I have been on many interview panels, and from what I know, people actually no longer put their date of birth on their application. At least this helps you see whether you need to work on your application? Just a thought.

Do you have any support networks around you? Or people you can debrief to?

Re: Problems with my boss

I recommend reading the book "Surrounded by psychopaths, or How to avoid manipulation by others" Thomas Erickson
Maybe she will be able to tell you the answer.

Re: Problems with my boss

The small team i work in talk about the lack of support & info. Nobody I know puts their Date of birth on applications. I do love my job gives me a degree of autonomy I havent had B4. i do have a psychologist see him once a fortnight. I have been in mgt. I know what makes a good boss. I do a lot of deep breathing too when am stressed, it helps

Re: Problems with my boss

@Ricardorider , despite jobs providing $$$, for me, a job gave me something to wake up to.

It gave me responsibility, and a sense of independence. The independence empowered me to make a difference in my life, even when things were tough.

So yes, I absolutely agree with you.
