Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Hey all! I decided to kick start a sweet little space for us to gather and talk ADHD!!

You can read the Topic Tuesday discussion (at which I was a guest) here.

Some of my go to resources:

ADDitude - Online Magazine/resource for all things ADHD

Three Pillars - My preference for explaining the experience of ADHD without relying on the DSM-V (scroll to bottom and work your way up the list)

How to ADHD - A Youtube channel with tips, tricks, strategies, how to guides, life hacks, you name it

Russel Barkley - a world renowned psychiatrist who has been at the forefront of research into ADHD, its neurochemical markers, and its impacts on daily experience, particularly in regards to executive dysfunction. The link is to an hour-long video aimed at parents of kids with ADHD. He also has one for adults with ADHD (with actionable tips!).

This is a space to talk about your experiences, struggles, strategies, and just an all-round safe spot to be a big pile of chaotic energy right here!!

@Jynx

I think it's also possible to have some degree of ND traits without necessarily being to the extent that it qualifies for a diagnosis - it all comes back to how heavily it impacts our ability to function.

Spot-on. I have a lot of Autistic-like traits, but not to a diagnosable extent because I cope well enough to regulate and mask/adjust to 'fit in'. But I suspect some of this requirement to adjust to the world adds to my MH difficulties.

I think having ADHD would drive me insane. I have some "forgetful days" very occasionally and it drives me nuts not being able to recall what I was doing or why. 😅

One of the signs that my partner might be ADHD was the constantly half-finished tasks, things left out of the fridge, interest-based engrossments, heightened frustration at small questions during other tasks. He decided to get tested because he was doing a TAFE course and struggling with focusing on reading/studying.

I would be interested out of curiosity for myself. However the costs and level of demand for assessments basically rule that out. People often have to wait 6+ months for an adult test here, and it will usually cost at least $1,000 for a straight-forward diagnosis (appointment plus report).

I look at it from a practical perspective - if I notice I have a similar difficulty, I look at what solutions/tips are offered for that challenge, and see whether or not they help for me too. 🙂

I had a really interesting conversation with a friend once, where she described to me the difference between Autistic burnout and Depression burnout, and how they can be confused (look similar symptomatically) but essentially need to be treated/solution in opposite ways. I resonated quite a bit with the autistic-burnout recovery concept, because I know from experience the depression-burnout tactics have not helped (and have lead to further burnout). Again, I don't need to be diagnosed to consider what of it I can try implementing for myself to see if it helps any.
