Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Hey all! I decided to kick start a sweet little space for us to gather and talk ADHD!!

You can read the Topic Tuesday discussion (at which I was a guest) here.

Some of my go to resources:

ADDitude - Online Magazine/resource for all things ADHD

Three Pillars - My preference for explaining the experience of ADHD without relying on the DSM-V (scroll to bottom and work your way up the list)

How to ADHD - A Youtube channel with tips, tricks, strategies, how to guides, life hacks, you name it

Russel Barkley - a world renowned psychiatrist who has been at the forefront of research into ADHD, its neurochemical markers, and its impacts on daily experience, particularly in regards to executive dysfunction. The link is to an hour-long video aimed at parents of kids with ADHD. He also has one for adults with ADHD (with actionable tips!).

This is a space to talk about your experiences, struggles, strategies, and just an all-round safe spot to be a big pile of chaotic energy right here!!

Haha @Captain24 ages ago, a friend of mine literally figured out his ADHD cos of all the memes I was posting on fb at the time!! He was like 'hold up... why can I relate to ALL OF THESE?!' 🤣

I think it's funny @Shaz51 has tagged me here as one of the ADHD 😋 because I'm not ADHD (well, I haven't been tested, but it's never been suggested). But my husband is diagnosed ADHD.
I don't mind being tagged or thought of as ADHD though. I think all my close friends concur that I am not neurotypical, even if I may not fit the criteria for ADHD or ASD. 😂 I fit in well with my ND friends. 🤗 It's well acknowledged that I click well with people towards the ASD end of the neuro-spectrum. 😊 Direct & straight-shooters for the win!

Loved your memes @Former-Member @Jynx and agree with @rav3n about how you find them all?!

Yeah, my hubby (and a few of my other friends) have ADHD. 🙂
No need to apologise - I found it funny.

I have at times wondered if my brain may have some elements of mild ADHD because some aspects of it I can definitely relate to, such as always having constant thoughts etc. But I don't have a problem with focusing when needed or a particular hyperfocus. I think I'm just an over-thinker 🤣.

All are welcome @AlwaysMyself - including folks who are unsure, self-diagnosed, or friends/family of ND peeps!

Is it something you've ever been interested in exploring for yourself though? Amongst my friend group at the time I was diagnosed it was like I was the first domino - within a few years about 3/4 of them had been diagnosed either ADHD, Autism, or both 😅

I've always said ADHD is very poorly named. It's not that we have a deficit of attention, it's more like we have an attention regulation issue. We've got more of an interest-based nervous system (as opposed to importance-based) which means for example I can spend 6 hours reading for pleasure and forget to pee/eat/put warm clothes on, but I will absolutely struggle to read like, a dry philosophy book or an article or something I have to read for an assignment, and I'll be sitting there re-reading the same two sentences over n over trying to get something to sink in!

I think it's also possible to have some degree of ND traits without necessarily being to the extent that it qualifies for a diagnosis - it all comes back to how heavily it impacts our ability to function. E.g. a common one I have is walking into a different room and forgetting why I went in there. This is like, a universal human experience though, not necessarily a symptom. However, for most folks I imagine it happens like, idk once a week or something?

For me it happens multiple times a day. It impacts my functionality cos it often takes me twice as much time and energy to do my chores cos I'm wandering all over the house like a lost lil lamb and end up with like, 3 chores half finished... and by then I'm probably also distracted by a random craft activity in another room - making yet more mess 🤣
