Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Wait what did I come into this thread for again? Oh yeah, ADHD!

Hey all! I decided to kick start a sweet little space for us to gather and talk ADHD!!

You can read the Topic Tuesday discussion (at which I was a guest) here.

Some of my go to resources:

ADDitude - Online Magazine/resource for all things ADHD

Three Pillars - My preference for explaining the experience of ADHD without relying on the DSM-V (scroll to bottom and work your way up the list)

How to ADHD - A Youtube channel with tips, tricks, strategies, how to guides, life hacks, you name it

Russel Barkley - a world renowned psychiatrist who has been at the forefront of research into ADHD, its neurochemical markers, and its impacts on daily experience, particularly in regards to executive dysfunction. The link is to an hour-long video aimed at parents of kids with ADHD. He also has one for adults with ADHD (with actionable tips!).

This is a space to talk about your experiences, struggles, strategies, and just an all-round safe spot to be a big pile of chaotic energy right here!!

Nice to find this thread. Newly diagnosed at 52yrs of age. Along with a few other comorbidities, severe depression, moderate anxiety, and insomnia that has me crying most morning before I even start the day to name a couple. I'm feeling quite fragile at the moment almost childlike with no direction, no idea who I am or what I want to do. I'm out of work with serious financial anxiety but also so anxious about taking on anything.new. I wish I just had the time to settle into this, digest it, start meds, get more counselling, see how they go, then decide what to do. I wish I could just step off the merry go round just for a little while and work on me. Can't get Centrelink, because I trained at a job for 2 days that was a terrible fit for me so now have to wait 8 weeks. Can't find a job that doesn't make me want to poke myself in the eye, and the ones I thought I had a chance at I didn't get. Just struggling a bit in the "can't get help/counselling or meds without money"- "can't get money" trap.

@Shaz51 I just had a look through ADDitude, found a mess of articles you could look at!

Also found a video on my fav ADHD youtube channel, How to ADHD. Largely talks about credit score but also has tips on putting systems into place to help better manage your money.

Hope this helps!! 😁

wow , thanks @Jynx , I had a quick look and my husband is lucky to have me to do the finance as he would not be able to do any of it himself -- ( he does not have a clue or even wants to understand ) -- it is me and that is it

will look again for tips for myself through the links

That's a lot to have on your shoulders @Shaz51. I hope there's ways that you can feel supported by him, if you're taking on so much of the labour yourself. All about balance after all 💜

Hello,

I couldn't really tell you what I have done to stay afloat with money over time as I've just sorta winged it and it's all worked out well - I use an excel spreadsheet to keep track of regular expenses and also use a calendar to remind me of their due date (which is in the excel spreadsheet anyway but as a "to do" sort of prompt.

Generally speaking, regarding strategies to manage myself day to day:

- I have been learning over time, with a great amount of protest on my part (lol) that life in most cases had absolutely no interest in slowing the merry go round down so I can pause and breathe for a bit - so I try and look for "things to hold on to" instead of looking for ways to get off

- Earplugs and a weighted blanket / similar things are really useful for anxiety - sometimes remaining still is not what I need however as I'm having a fight / flight response and need to move my body to resolve it (this is the expected evolutionary procedure when this response occurs) so I will clean something or whatever

- Rebates for sessions with a psychiatrist are decent, private health won't cover it in most cases. I saw a psych twice and they gave permission to my GP to prescribe within a certain amount, so this kept the cost down. Overall two sessions with the psychiatrist was about $460 ish out of pocket? (2 years ago) And then around $200 refunded via Medicare

- Dextroamfetamine is covered under the PBS (ie: 200 = $30); Vyvanse is not the last time I was taking it (comparatively 30 = $40 ish?)

- Go easy on yourself and remember that your brain brains differently, I don't spend my time harassing people in wheelchairs about their "unmet potential" in regards to walking on their legs; so I also (try) not to harass myself about doing things that I have learnt (over time) are either not effective for me, or at least very challenging

Hope some of that helps, hang in there
