Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Sam3 thanks for your explanation, and I appreciate all that you said. I'm sorry that things continue to be extremely tough for you and that your management of thoughts right now is dodgy at best. I got your post in the early hours of this morning, but decided not to respond until I was on the PC rather than a tiny mobile phone. I'm way too slow on the mobile and I find it frustrating for anything other than a one line response.

Its good, and very proactive of you, that you have made an appointment to see your psychiatrist today. Oh dear .. it sounds like this 2 week break from work is becoming a real trial for you! I'm a clean and tidy freak when it comes to household cleanliness and general order. Even more so when I am not doing well, such as now. My OCD comes to the fore and everything just has to be perfect, or I suffer terribly. I think for you it will be a welcome return to work in a little over a weeks time. At least then your mind will be preoccupied as it needs to be for your work. Perhaps then you wont put quite as much pressure on yourself to have everything in order at home. And what you do manage to get done at home will likely feel satisfying once more.

Great that you have been able to push yourself to get out and walk this week as well as catch up with friends. It all helps .. so well done. Hopefully you can do the same next week.

I suppose we are not able to change our general temperament. Have you ever done any CBT work with a psychologist? CBT focuses on challenging and changing unhelpful cognitive distortions, thoughts and behaviors. It improves emotional reactions and helps us to develop coping strategies that target solving current problems, issues, thoughts. If you havent already done some CBT therapy, you may well find it very helpful to you.

Yes I often think about things I should be grateful for, but way too often those thoughts get swamped by things in my life that I resent, fear, wish I could change, etc. Intellectually I know I have a lot to be grateful for, emotionally I cannot feel it.

I hope Sam that your session with your psychiatrist goes well today and you are able to find some comfort from it. I will be thinking of you.

Morning @Shaz51 , ahh huh ... so you're a shortie as well. Love those pics you sent .. thank you. Its funny isnt it, how we tend to have a picture in our mind about other people here? I actually had you picked as being taller ... but perhaps thats because of the way in which you are thought of here .. ie you are held in high regard. That probably translates to being tall in my minds eye. I saw you around a lot of threads early this morning ... I am with Sam3 in asking if you're okay.

Sherry 💕

Haha, yes, I’ve been known to climb on supermarket shelves @Former-Member

I worry it will fall on me too. 🤔😳😂

Sometimes I ask someone to help, but often no one is around.

Yes, I have alot to be grateful for @Sam3 but find it hard to feel it. I guess mostly because I often feel so exhausted. 🌷🌸

Hi @Former-Member Thank you for such a detailed response. Firstly how are you going? You’ve had such an emotive tine recently, so I hope you’re taking care of yourself. Your psychologist sounds absolutely amazing.

My psychiatrist appointment was ok - restarted the medication he told me to go off but at 4 times the dose & he wrote out some declarations/reminders to me finishing with assuring me of his “determination to work with you to improve my frustration about my functioning to enable greater resilience & confidence to function closer to your potential”.... so why do I still feel pretty hopeless?! Thanks again for caring.
