Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Yes thank you @Zoe7 , that lovely basket of flowers is beautiful, with all my favourite colours in it too. It did brighten up my evening a little, so your thoughtfulness was very much appreciated.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@Sam3 - thank you for your wise words. No ... I'm not an ass! And my psych was very kind in her email to me. Probably disappointed, but was supportive nonetheless. I have been taking otc headache tabs, as I have not been able to shake it since Wednesday. And I havent been eating much at all, just feel like I'll throw up every time I think about eating. I do not accept help easily, so I suppose thats why I have difficulty in accepting the help that my psych is offering. Its a little bit above and beyond, what she has offered, and I dont deserve any special treatment.

@Former-Member - no I dont mind at all that you felt you needed to delete some of your original message. I understand.

@Zoe7 - You're probably right about my psych wanting to help. She has seen me through some pretty bad times over the past few years. But as I explained to Sam3, I do not want anyone going above and beyond their assigned role. She is my psych, not my carer. And though I appreciate her offer so very much, I dont believe I could accept her driving me to the apt. Maybe to be there would be good? But she is a very busy lady, and I doubt she would be able to fit in with apts at the drop of a hat, so to speak. Actually I am yet to hear back from her about her ability to fit me in for an apt prior to my hospital apt. I expect she is fully booked up, as usual. That was really nice of your psych to take you to the school event, a testament to her care and to you as well. Anyway I will think about things between now and then.

@Peri - glad to read that you are back home after your Melbourne visit, and also that it all went well. Your renewed determination to tackle everyday life with more positivity is very admirable indeed. I hope it helps you to turn your current deep depression around. How are things going with your son since your return? Did I read that your son has a daughter in his care? Does that mean your grandaughter lives with you as well?

Yes Peri the apt was traumatising. It hurt, I bled, and its all too close to my actual trauma. Nightmares have returned since then, very specific nightmares. I was intending to go back on my anti-nightmare meds soon, but I think I may need to start sooner than I intended.

Yes the family visit went well and it has perked hubby up quite a lot emotionally. So thats all good.

As for refusing to have another attempt at the pap smear. I havent actually told anyone, including the GP during the screening questions, but I have had some worrying signs. So I really am concerned that something may be wrong. And when my GP told me (again) in December that I was long overdue for another pap test, he also told me that they did not get an adequate sample the last time I had one done over 3 years prior. So I think its something I need to do.

Peri, we all deal with a lot in our days, you included. No use comparing ourselves to others. You certainly are not pathetic. And thanks for your observation that I actually contribute something to this forum, and not just take from it.

@BlueBay - Thanks lovely, for your kind words. I very much appreciate you too. I know how much difficulty you are going through with everything happening in your life lately. My thoughts are also with you.

@Starta - You've been very quiet and I am concerned about you. I recall I read somewhere that you love coffee icecream, and that you are unable to find it anywhere any more? I like coffee icecream too, and I get a nice one from Woolies. Do you have a woolies near you? Its a woolies brand icecream and its called "Intense Coffee" in a 1 litre container. Hope you can find some.

@outlander - you too have been very quiet. I hope my discussions here have not been triggering for you. I hope you are doing better today than you have been in the past few days. Have you managed to make an apt with your pops GP yet? I know it was bothering you that you hadnt beforehand.

@Maggie - I know you too have been going through a tough time. My kindest thoughts are coming your way. Much love to you and little Mags too. I hope you have been able to resolve some of your accommodation issues, and also your data issues.

@Zoe7 - I hope you hear very soon about your school placement. Waiting with bated breath!

Hi @Shaz7 and @Faith-and-Hope.

Maybe asking your psych to meet you at the appointment to help you get through it is a good compromise @Former-Member She sounds like a very caring person and it is my experience that they don't offer to do these things unless they want to - it is not an obligation they have and sometimes we need to accept the help as we need it. It is something worth thinking about Hon.

Thanks @BlueBay. 💜
I will see what transpires @Zoe7. I think its highly unlikely that she will even be available at the time of my apt anyway. Though she did ask me if I would consider changing the apt. I said I just wanted it done, and that I already have the first available apt. I think what she wants me to do - ie to get in to see her and for me to get in to see my GP for sedation script prior to the next apt - is just not possible. Apts are very hard to get. And given I am yet to hear back from her, I am thinking that she now realises it aint gona happen either.
@Shaz51 - My apologies I missed your tag in my post above. Using the quick reply has its drawbacks! Are you okay up there? You seem to have been missing a bit yesterday and today. I see on the news that weather conditions have deteriorated further in some areas up there and a heap more rain still to come. I know you said you are in a safe spot, but things are getting pretty bad up there. And people are running out of food and supplies too. Really hope you, Mr Shaz and your Mujm are all okay. Perhaps your comms are down and you are unable to get on computer?

All - I took my psych's suggestion (permission anyway - I guess there is a subtle difference) of having a couple of stiff drinks last night. Not sure it helped with either the ongoing headache or the lack of sleep. I just really feel so physically and emotionally depleted. Physically I feel like I've run a marathon and am exhausted, depleted. I know my psych would tell me its due to the body's response to extreme anxiety ... the fight-flight-freeze response. It really is a very physically exhausting process to go through. And it takes time to recover from that. I know to many, it all sounds so ridiculous, but to me its all so very real. And it brings so many thoughts, feelings and physical reactions in the process.

Today thankfully, is a day where I can stay at home. Nothing in particular that I need to do.

And ... the cooler weather has finally arrived. Oh bliss! Cool breeze and overcast this morning. Only expecting mid 20s. Now thats my kind of weather!

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

It is not ridiculous in any way, shape or form @Former-Member It is real and it is traumatic What you have been through makes that so much harder - anyone in your position would be feeling it both physically and mentally. I can so relate to the physical sickness, the flashbacks and the mental drain you have been feeling - it takes a lot to get through it and for you it is not over yet and that just prolonges the agony. There is absolutely nothing ridiculous about the way our mind and body responds to such things and having that trauma background certainly exaggerates all those feelings. I feel for you so very much with all this and completely understand your reactions. They are valid, they are real and they are debilitating.

Hugs, more hugs and much love for you Hon

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@Zoe7 @Former-Member @BlueBay @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51 @outlander @Peri @Starta @Maggie and any others reading along.

I've been feeling intensely unsettled and restless the past few days and I just cannot relax. I fidget, I shake, I'm constantly on high alert and on edge, I'm crying over anything or nothing. I hear my heavy heartbeat thudding away in my chest and seemingly in my head at a rapid rate. My breath catches in my throat and my chest feels heavy. I feel sick, headachy, dizzy and I'm breaking out in a cold sweat. This is what living with PTSD is like for me. And on top of that, you get no sleep, or if you do .. you wish you hadnt. There's a constantly evolving beast within, which changes its stripes in order to trick you into believing its beaten, or at least tamed. But then it quickly reminds you that it isn't.

Trauma therapy has given back some normality in my life ... sometimes. It's given me some perspective and some understanding on the why's and how's. Its also armed me with various methods of coping with, and managing, the symptoms of PTSD. But there are still triggers and times where I feel I have gone right back to square one. And I find it very distressing, knowing that this will never go away entirely. All you can hope for is a lessening of its impact and hopefully a reduction in recovery time. And perhaps learn something new that may help the next time.

It's true that the end of February is traditionally a highly triggering time for me. But it's started early this year ... its only Feb 1 today. I know there have been a number of triggers in the past few weeks which have likely brought this on earlier than it normally would. I need to remind myself of how best to cope and how to turn this around, before it swamps me entirely. So this is where I'm at, and I don't like it.

My clinical psych rang me this afternoon and said she wants to see me as soon as possible. She has reorganised some of her appointments and can get me in on Wednesday morning. I dont know what it is that she intends to do or talk about. No doubt I will find out on the day. I told her I intended to start on my medication for PTSD-related nightmares and sleep disturbances tonight, and she thought that was a good idea. The trouble with these meds is that it can sometimes cause insomnia, and for me with my low blood pressure, increased dizziness. Whats best - snatches of sleep disturbed by nightmares, or no sleep at all - I wonder?

Hugs and hugs @Former-Member
To put it nicely ptsd is shite and so hard to live with. Yes you are right i dont think it ever really goes away just lessens.. eventually. ...

Perhaps you are feeling triggerred alot earlier than usual as you had that test as well. I am glad that youll have your psych appt. She is someone who seems to know you quite well and wants to help as much as possible.

My fingers are crossed that the meds will work instead of making things worse . Sorry im probably not much help but happy reading and hearing what you have to say as much as you need. Sitting with you xo
