Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Dear @Former-Member

No way do you deserve being snapped at or put down. He is being cared by YOU. You are driving and overseeing his meds. Appreciation is the appropriate response. Yes he has a difficult disease to cope with which must be very frustrating and scary for him.

I had a girlfriend once who was suffering from Breast cancer. Right up to her death, she was beautiful and graceful and not playing up her illness. We both connected quickly, at a New Years Eve party as we were both disabled, but it was with gentleness. Thanks for reminding of one of my "friendly" ghosts. We knew each other for 3 years.

Being triggered is often sudden and unexpected.

Hope you have a better day tomorrow.

Thanks so much for your messages and company too @Appleblossom @Former-Member @outlander

So, given that its now 3.15am, and I'm yet to get to sleep, it looks like its to be a no sleep night. Too stirred up, too alert ... too damned tired to sleep now anywsy.

Its a very hot and still night. Silence, and yet I hear every tiny creaking sound in the house, every little insect noise outside. Afraid of each.

I have Holly snuggled close beside me. She's asleep, but I think would sense if anyone were around. Perhaps he's no longer even alive? I havent checked recently. Damned car! Thank god there arent that many of them around.

I need sleep I think Im going nuts here. Must sleep ..

Hi @Former-Member. So sorry to hear you had such horrible one yesterday. It sounds awful.

I noticed you are around via a 'support' on another thread. Did you manage any sleep last night? How are you doing this morning?

Thinking of you 💗

@Zoe7

Morning my friend. Cannot say its good, but it is another day.

Thanks for your usual understanding and calm presence.

Dont worry, I will get back to the GP practice again to make that long overdue appointment. I guess I shouldnt have even tried to make the apt yesterday, when I was already in an unstable mood. Bound to end in tears ... which it did.

Its always hard to get an appointment at my GP practice. It would be so much easier if you could just walk in when you feel brave to see your GP or any other purpose, wouldnt it? No worrying beforehand, no chances to back out. Just a spur of the moment thing and get it done. But alas ... it doesnt work that way.

I will phone them next time to see if I can get either a nurse or one of 2 female GP registrars currently there. Not today though, I dont want to break down again in blubbering tears!

Actually I'm not normally a person who procrastinates or puts things off. Generally if things need to be done, I'm the one in there doing them. But this one beats me every time. But I will get there. After all, I didnt get this calming medication from my GP last week for nothing! I will phone next week, when I feel a little better. Too tired and too triggered to think now.

I hope you have a good day. Perhaps you are making some further progress with your peacock painting? I really should try to get back to some art again myself. Not sure what I want to do though.

Sherry 💕🤗

Dear @Former-Member - sorry to hear you also had a bad night. I hope I did not contribute to that. I have been sleeping badly for some time, just getting an occasional hour or two through most nights. Its pretty exhausting, as well as frustrating. I asked my GP about something to help with sleep some time back. But he was reluctant to give me anything, he gave me a talk about sleep hygeine instead and sent me away with some reading matter and a sleep diary. Cant say it helped much. But I agree with him in that I certainly do not want to become reliant on medication to force sleep. I take a medication to help with ptsd related nightmares and sleep disturbances sometimes (anniversary time or when badly triggered at other times). But I find it can cause insomnia. You cant have nightmares if you cannot get to sleep after all. 😟 So I try to avoid that unless I am getting a lot of flashbacks at night. I dont have very much on today, so I hope I can manage a day time nap. Not recommended in the sleep hygiene notes, but hey ... I'll take what I can get right now. I hope your day is a better one too Mumi.

@CheerBear - thanks for visiting. Yes I do recall 'supporting' one of your posts earlier in the morning. I was browsing and trying to redirect my thoughts for a while. So was reading some of the posts of people on line at the time. It was sweet of you to come and support me too ... so thank you. I managed to doze off into a aggitated slumber for an hour or so eventually. Enough to make my sore tired eyes slightly less sore. A might get some witchhazel and put it on a cool cloth and put it over my eyes when I have a nap later today. Right now though, hubby is stirring so I need to get moving with morning medications and breakfast.

@BlueBay - Please do not apologise for not being around last night. I hope you were sleeping. Thanks for your kind words, they are comforting and reassuring. Having you sit with me and give a big hug, even if only in spirit ... is a lovely thought. So how are you feeling this morning? I hope things have settled down a little for you. I will visit you on your thread later to see whats happening for you.

Thanks everyone.
Sherry 🤗💕

Give yourself a few days even. Dont let black dog get you. You were seriously triggered and then not allowed space to process it, so it blew out of control. It is probably not permanent and calming meds may help. It is important hub sees you as human with needs too, even if he has terminal disease. Gently Gently.

Your medical appointment is closely allied to the trigger so the 2 at once was too much. It wont matter. Do it when you are ready. I did not do Breast checks for a few years as I just could not cope with pummelling and the machine and am careful about who I do the other with.

I used to try and get too many things in each day, but am slowly learning to scale back. It makes for a lot less stress.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

It was pretty much a spur of the moment decision I made last year to have the procedure done @Former-Member My GP had mentioned to me that it was long overdue and I flatly told her it wasn't going to happen. She understand my thinking - much like the same for you it is highly triggering and quite traumatic. The next time I saw her I said lets do it now - I had worked myself up enough about it and knew if I didn't do it then then I probably wouldn't do it at all. Unlike you I have a weekly half hour appointment with my GP so there was penty of time to get it done. I wish you could just walk in and say 'do it now' also - wouldn't make it less traumatic but would allow you to work up to it in your own time. All my thoughts are with you on this one - it is incredibly hard to deal with under normal circumstances let alone with the ones you are dealing with.

I certainly hope that those at the GP practice can help you out with all this and that you get some support to get through it. We are definitely here for you too Hon and although that will not help much with the going through with the actual procedure we can be there with you in spirit and here before and afterwards for you to chat if you need.

Very much thinking of you in all that this entails. Hugs and hugs

ps - planning on painting some more today whilst keeping cool inside with the air con on. 🎨
