Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

It might be nice for others to see the processes as you go with your painting @Former-Member - like a tutorial on how to paint leaves for those interested - just a thought

The painting of your niece is very special and would be difficult to do emotionally - but what a wonderful tribute to her

I think our Lions will win a couple more games before the year is out - and maybe not finish on the bottom of the ladder. If the group stays together over the next couple of years then I believe we have the basis of a really good team - I suppose only time will tell there!

Yes @Former-Member, the doctor`s appt was good but I also had a not soo good surprise , I am now on Ab`s now which is good

But I have a kidney checkup every 6 months and I found out that none of my doctors appts or blood tests or bladder / kidney infections which i have had in the last 6 months were NOT sent onto my kidney specialist

Re: Living with PTSD

That is disappointing to hear @Shaz51 - do you know if there was a reason they were not sent to your kidney specialist?

@Former-Member You never have to apologise to the pea Sherry. I miss threads all the time. 🙂 xxx

Re: Living with PTSD

@Zoe7, I think it is because we always have different doctors all the time and then I don`t remind them to send them up to the specialist -- but todays tests were sent up today which is good

no wonder the kidney specialist thought i have being doing ok

Re: Living with PTSD

Hi everyone. @BlueBay @Zoe7 @Shaz51 @Bunniekins @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope

I just wanted to report in with you, that I have achieved my second tick for the week. No, I didnt get to my gym class as, unfortunately, the timing wasnt suitable with hubbys medical needs today. As my psych said when I saw her last week, routine is very difficult right now with so many medical appointments and other things needed for him. So she said not to beat myself up for missing classes, and that perhaps a short walk may be a better option for the time being. To get out into the fresh air and to take Holly out too. So, I jumped in the car this morning and took a drive into town to one of Hollys favourite walking spots - a large series of parks with a river running along one of the borders. We had a good walk for about 45mins. More than I've managed to fit in for some time, so its progress. And of course, I felt good because Holly loved it too.

Yes @Zoe7, the portrait of my neice is special, so I really hope it turns out well. Perhaps part of my reluctance to get back to finish it, is that I am happy with it so far, and am a little worried about stuffing it up. Actually its not painted, I am using coloured pencils.

Ha ha, yes I think the Lions are a good team in the making. They will give a few teams some stick this year, but will be much better in the years to come.

@Shaz51 - I will give some consideration to posting my techniques pics to the art thread. Though I dont expect anyone would be too interested in them. But will think about it.

Oh dear, now thats a big blunder with your regular blood or urine tests going through to your kidney specialist. Do you see a nephrologist? My husband sees one every 6 months too, just to monitor how his remaining kidney is going. When do you have your next checkup? Hope you're starting to feel much better by now Shaz.

Sherry

@Former-Member Hi Sherry well that is both of us who have been for a long needed walk today. The weather is beautiful isn't it. Am so glad you went out with Holly and that both of you enjoyed your break from the routine of being a carer. Thanks for keeping in touch am always interested in how things are going for you and Holly 🙂 xxx

@Former-Member@Bunniekins Good on you both for getting out walking today. Raining here in Tassie, but it's needed, and I do love a rainy day. I hope the rest of your day goes as well for you both.
