Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Thanks @Shaz51, thanks @Bunniekins. Waiting for the yellow triangle to clear to see what gift you have sent me. Will check back later. Cuppa is ready. Will go outside on the deck with my little adorable Holly and breathe. Then try to get through the nurses to speak to my Mum to see how she's faring this arvo. They were running lots of tests, doing some scans, an angiogram and doing blood transfusions etc.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Ahh @Shaz51 the pic has come through. Nice!

No I dont really read magazines. I sometimes read the newspaper though, which we have delivered daily. Hubby likes to read the paper, although his eyes are really bad at present and he gets totally frustrated that he cant see. He has worsening cataracts, but because of his immunotherapy, the eye specialist wont do anything unless the oncologist gives the go ahead. And he wont. So its hard for him.

I do have a novel I started to read about 18 months ago, which I need to drag out and get back into. It was a good book too, but I just cant seem to get to it.

Our back deck is nice and quiet and we can see lots of countryside, hills, valleys. We are on 3 acres and one of our neighbours have a larger block of around 15 acres where they have a horse, a couple of sheep and a poddy calf. Bit noisy out there at present, they are doing some mowing. So 'the world going by' for me is usually cattle, horses, birds, sheep, etc. Its nice.

Re: Living with PTSD

Hi everyone @Shaz51 @Bunniekins @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Former-Member and others.

I hadnt realised it had been so long since I last posted here. It was just after trauma anniversary that I last posted. A lot has happened since then. Though I seem to have switched emphasis to the Carers forum matters rather than this one, due to all the drama's which have occurred there since March.

I guess as Carers, thats what tends to happen. We neglect our own issues to take up the challenges that those we care for present our way.

I have been coping personally, at least outwardly. But internally I have really struggled. Life is really just too hard sometimes.

It was tough needing to stay in the city during hubbys month long hospitalisation in April. Being in the city, especially on my own, presents many triggers for my PTSD. And with my husband being so unwell, and going through 2 occasions where he was knocking on the door of death, that took a toll on me too. Being left on my own is another trigger. Though hubby has continued to be abusive at times, I do still see him as my protector. He came into my life not long after my sexual assault, and I came to see him as someone who would keep me safe and secure. Psychological and occasional physical abuse aside, he has (in my mind at least) continued to fulfil that role in my life. Given that he has a terminal illness with an uncertain life expectancy, I am going to have to get used to life without my protector in it.

My brother whom I am a contact person for with his SI has also been through a difficult month. He is no longer seeing the psych he had been seeing since the car accident which took away his young daughter. And it would have been his daughter's 14th birthday at the end of last month. As a result he has been struggling badly, and has taken to phoning me on numerous occasions again. Every couple of days he phones and needs to just talk, sometimes for an hour or so. So this is taking a toll on my now very much depleted mental resources. Thankfully his eldest boy who has the drug problems remains in rehab where he is doing very well. Its a 3-month in house thing. So at least that takes a load of my brothers mind. One thing going right.

My Mum and Dad's health also remains a major issue. Unfortunately with my hubby so unwell and needing me 24/7, I am unable to travel to spend time with them. So I now feel I am neglecting them.

So my mind remains in almost constant turmoil, and I have not been sleeping well for months. My anxiety remains high, and there are times my depression takes over. I'm having dark thoughts which worry me considerably. I seem to be having lots of thoughts around mortality lately. I just dont know any more.

I saw my lovely psych last week and we spoke about all of this. She has been wanting to see me fortnightly lately as I go through so much personal upheaval. Her words! But with hubbys needs dominating, its really difficult to schedule appointments for myself. His needs come first. I've agreed to monthly visits, which so far, I have managed to do. Any more than that, then my 10 x MHCP visits will expire with still half a year to go. Cant have that.

Okay, that better be it for me for the time being. Need to get some lunch ready for hubby who just emerged from bed. I need to try to be here more than I have been lately. I know it benefits me to talk about things to you lovely very understanding people. I cant keep things bottled up as I have been of late. Its bad for me, and likely bad for those around me too.

Re: Living with PTSD

Hello @Former-Member

I am not surprised you are struggling with the load you are currently under - I can well and truly relate. It's very draining also - when sleep does not come it times everything by 100 and worsens anxiety and depression. Hope you can sort something out there soon. I personally think you are doing a remarkable job with very little support - that's an inspiration, but I do hope things ease up and give you a break soon to give you that balance for some reprieve.

Yes, life can be very, very hard. For so many, but I treasure the good in it. Hope you can get some much needed rest and self nurture for a bit now. Sitting with you 🌹

First I want to welcome you to this forum it is a safe place. Second, more importantly, I want to acknowledge the important and very brave step you have taken in expressing to us what happened to you You are a hero to other people suffering in silence. You should know that. Without going into details in a different way, you are my hero. Thank you for having the courage to post this post.

Re: Living with PTSD

Thanks dear @Maggie and the super @Bunniekins. Also @Zoe7, I didnt tag you in my earlier post today because I didnt want to trigger you, as I realise I have done in the past. But there wasnt anything there, or here, which should be a problem. So I'm happy to tag you now. But if you decide not to read my thread, thats quite okay, I understand. Just dont want you to think I'm excluding you. You have been a wonderful support to me in the past, and you're important to me, hence the tag this time.

Yes so after talking to my psych last week, I realise I need to start a bit better self care from now on. Since hubbys ill health essentially since November, but life threatening since late March, I just have not had the chance or inclination to do anything for me.

So starting from this week, I intend to start doing things just for me. I have been sadly neglecting little Holly, so I hope to get out occasionally for nice walks with her. Something I enjoy and her too. Its lovely to see the joy on her happy little face when she knows she's going for a walk or a drive in the car to somewhere new and exciting for an adventure. Plus I also hope to get back into the routine of going to my weekly gym class for my pilates/yoga group sessions. As my psych said to me, physical activity is about the best AD you can get.

I have also been very remiss in my volunteering work at the local aged care facility. They are very understanding and are aware of the reasons why I havent been there lately, so there hasnt been any pressure from them. But it is something I enjoy, and I actually want to get out and do things like that. Plus, as my psych says, its important for me to get out of the house and away from hubby sometimes. With the medications he is still on, he continues to be very angry and volatile. There are times I feel the need to escape in order to preserve both my physical and psychological self.

Plus I really want to get back to doing a bit of reading occasionally. I have had a book I commenced over a year ago, and I'm half way through it. Just havent had the concentration ability to get back to it. Every time I've tried, I read a page then have to reread it again because nothing has sunk in. Incidentally my psych said I should exercise first and then read. Something about releasing endorphins or adrenaline? Sorry, I guess I wasnt concentrating too good when she told me that bit.

And my art too - art lessons have recommenced again this term a few weeks ago. I have managed to get to 1 of the 3 weeks. This is a course I do through U3A, only costs $15 a school term, and is as casual or serious as you wish to make it. So its good value and lots of fun. I really enjoy TRYING to do artistic pursuits. Will never be any good at it I suspect, but that doesnt mean I cannot enjoy the trying.

So from this week I hope to start getting back into doing a few of these things. Maybe not all at once, as hubby still has at least 2 medical apts each week. So routines are difficult to stick to. But I aim to try to do at least one of these things each week. I make myself accountable to all of you. That helps me.

Sherry

@Former-MemberI think you are doing brilliantly considering everything that you have to cope with. So happy to see Holly's lil face back it has been too long 🙂 xxx
