Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

@Former-Member

I just responded to you on other post...

am happy to read and write wherever you go...

as heartless as this might sound...it is a good sign that your daughter was able to cry so soon.,...releasing her emotions naturally ...I think that you will understand...

this also demonstrates that you have shown your daughter how important releasing emotions are...another confirmation of how good a mother you are...

again not wanting to sound uncaring....experiencing this trauma together...will help you both on leaving the hospital...

we are all here ...listening...empathising...caring....someone else mentioned your strength...

every time there is another hit...using self-care....getting back up even stronger than before

keep in touch when you can without any extra pressure on you...

all about you and your daughter at the moment

Hi @Former-Member - Firstly ... definitely not a problem if you wish to continue the discussion here on my thread. Its where it first developed and been updated since. So I certainly have no objections. Although I must say I was shocked when I got home just now and saw all the email notifications about activity on my thread! Still that was nice anyway.

Oh goodness yes, I know all about waiting around in hospitals. I did some more of that myself today. Went with hubby for some further brain CT scans and chest and abdomen. Just checking for further cancer spread, hopefully get a good result later. But its been lots of waiting around. Been up at the hospital since 10.30am and only just returned home now for a quick lie down and shut eye. I got no sleep last night so I am desperately tired now.

Right, I'm nodding off as I type. I need sleep. Will catch up later and hopefully by then things have progressed for you Bella3.

Sherry xx

@Former-Member I hope you manage some sleep,,it's hard with so much on your mind though. Once friends know hubby is home, or in the local hospital, they will visit and give you a bit of a break. I'm in bed myself just resting. Take care.😀😀

Hi @Former-Member@Former-Member@outlander@Maggie@Former-Member

@Former-Member - I hope you managed to get some much needed rest and the situation has settled a bit for you. One day at a time now my friend. How is your daughter? Thinking of you 💕

@Former-Member - you may have seen it but just in case, I replied to your post to me on page 33. You don't need to answer, I just wanted you to know that I had not forgotten you. How has your day been?

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member. Thanks for your reminder about your post on Page 33. It's true I had initially missed it with all the activity around Bella3's misfortune with her toe and subsequently her daughter's emergency.

Okay so I do agree with you that everyone has a limit to how independent and strong they can be, especially when difficulties have come over a long period of time. I do accept now that I cant always do things on my own, that I do need some help to get through. And that help needs to take the form of professional help as well as support from my peers.

As for having friends of my own, and not just hubbys mates, that is a difficulty. I guess I have always been a bit of a loner. I always used to have two or three fairly close friends, but I lost touch with them after I married due to the difficulties of maintaining any outside friendships with a narcissistic husband. I guess I just havent really tried since then. Even former workmates are hard to keep in touch with when hubby is constantly checking and dictating. I just cant deal with the inevitable explanations and arguments any more. Actually hubby and I will have been married 20 years this Wednesday.

Hubby was allowed home from hospital on Saturday afternoon, after 20 nights in hospital. Thats a long time. He is a somewhat demanding patient at the best of times, and this time is very wobbly and unsure on his feet, so I need to keep a close eye on him around the house. We have steps, which is a concern.

I was hoping to get back into my usual routine this week which includes my gym class (tai chi, yoga, pilates combination) on Tuesday and my volunteer duties of visiting people in a local nursing home on Wednesday. But it will depend on word from hubbys oncologist. I also need to get in to see my psych and my GP as soon as I can, as I am already way overdue for both. And I do need that little bit of extra support right now, as I admitted to earlier.

@Former-Member, I hope you are okay? I read elsewhere that things are not that great for you right now. Thankyou for being there for me, and so many others around here that I see you supporting. Please take good care of yourself as well. Thanks for the hug, its very comforting. And the same back to you.

Kindest

Sherry

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member

Congratulations on your Wedding anniversary this Wednesday! I hope things go well at home and your husband recovers quickly. Your volunteer work with aged residents sounds interesting - how long do you visit for and what do you talk about? I hear many are on their own. Very sad.

I am okay. Just feeling a bit low wanting to retreat into myself (that's what I meant about disappearing off the planet, sorry if I worded that wrong). Christmas coming up may have something to do with it. One day at a time for now.

Hope you do get some time for you this week and moments to relax 🤗
