Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Hi @Appleblossom.

Thanks so much for your post today.

Good advice about keeping food choices simple.

I do have veges in the fridge and will probably cook up some steamed veges for dinner tonight. I like all veges, and fruit too. Although unfortunately I now need to restrict fruit a little as I have insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar. This is thanks to long periods of high anxiety and stress levels causing high cortisol levels in the blood. No other risk factors, so thats what the GP has decided is the only possible cause. But yes, I will have veges for dinner tonight.

When weather is hot, I drink plenty of water. But as soon as it cools off a bit, I know I dont drink enough water. It is something I need to be aware of and give myself a little reminder from time to time.

When I am at the supermarket in a couple of days time, I will pick up some of those little frozen lean cuisine or McCains meals. They are perhaps not the best nutrition wise, but at least they are something, and are quick and easy to microwave. Hopefully once hubby gets home next Friday I will be in better shape all round - mentally, physically and emotionally.

I have been taking a daily multi vitamin. I know this is not meant to be a substitute for normal healthy eating, but I figure its likely to be of some benefit.

Anyway thanks so much. Hope you are having a nice day. And a happy Easter to you.

Hi @Former-Member. No, I dont have any plans for tomorrow nor the next day. I am catching up with a friend on Monday however. How about you? Are you doing something with the family for Easter?

Hi @Former-Member

I feel for you a lot and can resonate about not sleeping. I am struggling with that at the moment and like @Former-Member said sleep is important. But it's hard.

Hi @Former-Member I have been thinking about you lately, i hope you are okay. Good luck with the house inspection, i so know how stressful that part is. Actually the whole part, selling, buying, packing and moving - it's really difficult. We're in the process of packing boxes and I just can't begin, it's too overwhelming.

Have a nice Easter @Former-Member and @Former-Member. I will be home with my kids. it means a lot to me to have family together, even though i won't have my parents with me (their choice) i will ave my children. But it always brings a few tears.

Take care both of you lovely ladies xxxooo

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Thanks @BlueBay, I appreciate your input.

@Former-Member - sorry you've had such a bad day.

Sounds like a good idea to try to wear out your sisters tomorrow, and thus at least give you a break at night. How old are your sisters? And what do they like to do, which will wear them out physically?

Perhaps on Sunday, you can do something for you? How are all your sketches going from your garden? I loved the ones you were doing before, but havent seen any lately. Perhaps I have just missed them. You would tag me wouldnt you, if you'd already done my little green frog?

Just wondering Caterpillar, do you also have to cook meals etc for all the family, as in your sisters and your pop? If so, what do you like to cook? I hope you get to enjoy some down time for yourself somewhere during the weekend.

ive doen your little green frg @Former-Member im sure i tagged you, but i can re tag you in it

my drawings ive done heaps more now and am up to the background- i wasnt sure whether you still wanted me to tag you as your already dealing with so many things yourself but if youd like me to tag you and keep you updated im happy to do that 🙂

yes i cook 90% of the time for the family but my favourite things to cook are deserts like brownies, cookies, i havent mastered the caramel slice yet but ive tried to do that, i can make triffles and still learning pavlova and tarts but getting there

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member@Faith-and-Hope@BlueBay@Appleblossom@Former-Member

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter weekend. I hope @Former-Member managed to catch up on some sleep. That is what I have been trying to do and nursing a migraine for the last couple of days. That's why I have been a bit quiet on this forum, my physical health has declined but I hope to strengthen once my sleep pattern becomes normal. It all takes time I guess. How are you going @Former-Member. Hope you enjoyed this break with your children @BlueBay and thanks for thinking of me. Am thinking of you both always 🤗💕
