Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Thank you for your long response and advice, @Former-Member . You've given me a bit to think about, in a good way.

Yes unfortunately yesterday was not a good day for me at all. I dont know, I may need to take another break. Things are starting to get the better of me again, and I'm getting to the stage where I dont trust myself any more. Not sure ... I will reassess my feelings on the matter in the coming days.

I'm sorry to read that things are bad enough for you to consider taking another break from the forums. I hope things improve for you, even if you do need to take some time away.

That would be nice, if you write on the Germophobe thread...I'll look forward to it, whenever you get a chance (no pressure at all, though). I must admit, I was surprised when I joined how little there was here on germophobia and hoarding disorder. I was hoping to meet lots and lots of other germophobes! And OCD has such a variety of forms. But it would be good to listen to how your OCD affects you.

The past 6 months or so of change that you mentioned on the forums corresponds to Covid-19, I guess... All those new members, 200 a week! Wishing you good luck with the adjustment, which can't be easy...

Hi @Owlunar

I am so sorry you are in so much pain. It must be very difficult for you living on your own. Please take care and rest up as much as possible. Can your daughter help out a bit?

Thinking of you a lot,

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Thanks @BlueBay

I am taking it easy - and as unpleasant as it is it is something I have been through before and I have no not doubt I will again

But I do have council help coming in to do the heavy work - and I can sit it out

I know you are having a bad time - I wish you had thought in time to get a Jet Star flight for only $19.00 each - how great that would have been - but I didn't know about it either

School holiday - that can be tricky with all the kids - I have been lucky travelling in July before this but I remember - I think it was when I went to the Sunshine Coast last winter - the business class lounge was full of kids but they weren't in the business class area of my plane at least

Still - wth the coronavirus spiking right now it's unlikely you could get a refund with cheap fares - so maybe waiting is a better thing although it is frustrating - I know this myself

All the best though

Thanks @BlueBay for your lovely messsage this morning. Sorry you werent feeling so great this morning, but I was amused to read your post about Little A a while ago. Sounds like she brings so much love and laughter into your life. I will respond to your thread later.

Thanks @NatureLover ... you are very kind and thoughtful, as always. Yes I will get to your germophobe thread, at some stage. Need to get my silly head into gear first. No, the changes to the forums are not related to the COVID thing. Although it does seem to have brought heaps of new members here. Which is great for the forums, and we members as well. The more the merrier. Well maybe thats not the best term to use? But ... you know what I mean.

Thanks @eth ... Yes it is a lovely quote and I thought it very fitting for those I directed it to. Glad you liked it too. How has your day been? Hope you are making some progress with your public housing application.

Very true @outlander ... we do all have our bad days. Trouble is, there seems to be more and more of them lately. Its soo not fair. From reading your Worry Room post this arvo, I can see you are strugging again today too. Here to talk if you need Li'l One.

Yes @Owlunar I have tagged you a number of times, both here and on BlueBays thread, because I have been worrying about you. Sounds like I had cause to worry too. You must be in a lot of pain, which is very tiring in itself. I really hope you can find some relief very soon. Good to know that you are receiving some Council help for while you are lying low. But I know you are essentially caring for yourself, which is clearly very awkward and painful right now. Please dont feel obliged to respond to any of my posts, if you are not feeling up to it. I will continue to tag you though, if you dont mind ... just to let you know that you are being thought of with much concern and affection. Sending love your way.

@Former-Member... I also read your Worry Room post. Sounds like some of your past traumas are coming to the fore right now. Please stay safe and know that everyone here is ready and willing to support you when you're ready. I have really missed you being around as much. I am also concerned about @Lee82, who is also strugging a lot lately. My thoughts are with you Lee, as I hope and pray for easier times ahead.

@Pollyotter... so your birthday was the same day as my friends birthday. Nice coincidence. Did you get the tags over the weekend to the Birthday thread? Lots of members posted birthday wishes to you there, and lots of yummy goodies as well. If you didnt get the tags or lost your way there. Here is the link to the thread to read through for all your messages: Happy Birthday Messages to Pollyotter

Hi @Former-Member ... hope your final day of packing has gone well and you are now pretty much ready to go. Are you excited, or just plain exhausted? I trust all goes well with the uplift by removalist in the morning. I expect it will be an early start for you tomorrow.

@Former-Member... how are things going for you?

@Sans911... I am really sorry about last night. Please dont let my stupidity keep you away from the forums and those who love you. You very definitely belong here, if to be here is what you want and/or need. 😔🌸

So I took a huge step out of my comfort zone and made Izzy a little mad, but I stand by what I have done.

I got sick of the messages why aren't you on fb, you haven't liked any of my stuff on Instagram in like forever, you never visit anymore!!!??!?! So I took a deep breath and in a group message to all my family that I talk to, I told them the truth.

I told them about my DID and my C-PTSD diagnosis. I explained how my DID works and told them about my alters. I explained the triggers and reactions to the triggers because of the C-PTSD. I told them I can't drive, that I am medicated, that Sean has had to move back in for 24/7 support and monitoring. I told them that my day starts and ends with sh everyday and that si thoughts happen a couple of times a week and that in February I try to leave this world 4 times.

I am so tried of hiding who we are because of the fear of rejection. Funny enough the two who are a'holes were the nicest to me in the end!

I hope you all have had an ok day. 💜Nikki

Ohhhh @Former-Member I just read your post to Darkness thread. I am so very proud of you Nikki for stepping out of your comfort zone. You did the right thing for Izzy, even if she was a little mad about it at first. In fact you did the right thing for all of you. You are so courageous Nikki, and you do so much to take care of Izzy, and being her protector. You are right ... there is no need to hide whats going on, or to fear rejection. And how ironic that the two biggest a'holes, have now become your biggest supporters. I am very happy to hear that you have achieved so much today Nikki, Izzy, Kimmy. I hope this can be the start of your recovery, along with acceptance and support from those around you.
