Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Hi @Former-Member etc,

Thanks all for your tags the last 2 days. Unfortunately I haven't been able to respond to you all individually because I am deep in the mire again. Thought my public housing application was finished and lodged (with heaps of evidence documents) on Friday but Monday morning got hit with a request for rather a lot more supporting evidence. Trying to gather it, but anxiety spiking so much doing it that I am exhausted after every effort and really haven't got it in me to be much support to anyone while this is happening. I know you'll all forgive me and will hope to get on top of it before long. They have given me another deadline to lodge by and it's only 2 weeks this time. Waiting til tomorrow morning to speak to my support coordinator about it all.

@eth .. Just bringing your recent post to your thread (as above) to here where I can respond.

I am really disappointed to hear that your housing application needs more work. But at least you have been granted an extension to get it all completed, and it sounds like you dont have to start from scratch again. What a pain this has all been! Who would have thought it should be this hard to obtain what is one of life's essentials, ie shelter? Try not to let your anxiety take over. You have enough time to get it all done, and I'm sure your support person will help you get there. Feeling very disappointed for you though.

Hey @Former-Member the hardest one (of 5) that they've asked for is a Rental Application Diary that proves I've been looking for open (private) market accommodation and getting declined for it. Well I haven't applied for anything that was unsuitable or unaffordable have I?! So catch 22. God knows how I'm supposed to do that, particularly while still in lockdown. Hoping my support coordinator has some suggestions. Thanks for your support.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@eth ... really? Geeze! Surely thats one they could let slide under the circumstances of COVID.

Hopefully your support person has some ideas. Otherwise start applying for unsuitable and unaffordable accommodation. And hope for a quick decline. What a pain, and how flamin' annoying.

Think of your big fire out on the farm and the sense of calm you felt there. 🔥 Things will work out in the end. 💕

Hi Sherry, sorry I didn't reply earlier I didn't know what to say when you said the above. I will admit that fear took hold at the thought of what you might have meant. I am praying that things get easier for you and that I get to "see" you hear as often as possible. You are one of Izzy's biggest and most caring supports and I have become very fond of you. Thank you for all of you support by the way. Sending you huge hugs. @Former-Member

Hey guys. I hope your evenings are going well.

How do you talk courage back into a man who does so good but is mentally drained and wants to throw in the towel? Such a good man and he is being dragged down by people he has helped out of bad situations.

.........................................................

Hi @Pollyotter ... Just bringing your post on your thread to here, where I can respond.

My evening is happening, though I wouldnt say it was going well.

Is the man you are asking about the one you started a new thread about some time ago? I recall a month or more ago a thread where you spoke about someone you know, who had been falsely accused of rape or assault. I'm guessing this is the case you're talking about now?

I really dont know how to go about repairing the damage done to someone who has gone through what he has. Its a sure way of stuffing up someones life thats for sure. How do you go about restoring someones reputation after such a thing? They say that mud always sticks ... and it does.

The fact that its happened to a person who has devoted so much of their time to helping others, only makes it so much worse that this is happening at all. How does he learn to trust again, and put himself in a vulnerable position where this may happen again? I have that problem, as I expect you do too .. but I guess it would be similar from the other side, if you're accused of something you havent done.

Do you know if he has sought any help from a MH practitioner ... a counsellor, therapist or psychologist? It may be beneficial to him to do so. I imagine he would be going through hell right now, and not knowing where to turn. I'm glad he has you to talk to and who believes in him. I'm sorry I dont know what more you can do.

I'm sorry @Former-Member . And thank you for your kind words. The hugs were appreciated too and returned with thanks. I will be okay, so please dont worry. I see my psychologist tomorrow and I will need to talk about a few things which are happening. A difficult session I think. Will see how I go.

Much love

Sherry 💕

@outlander@Maggie@Former-Member@BlueBay@Eve7@Former-Member

Thank you all for your kind messages today, and I am very sorry that I caused you to worry. Although I have to admit that I was a bit concerned about me too.

I am okay now, a little better than earlier. I did contact a help line earlier and it helped a little. And I see my psychologst tomorrow. I'm hoping that will help further, although I know it will be a difficult session. But one thats needed. I'm glad that she is returning earlier than originally planned. She has been monitoring me via email the last few days, and I am very grateful that I have her in my corner. I have been seeing her now for over 7 years, which is a long time. Though she has been only treating me for about 5 years for my PTSD. Something she uncovered, while she was treating me for pain management. She has been very good to me, and for me.

I'm off to bed now ... I need rest, if not sleep. I dont know how much I will be around tomorrow. Maybe in the morning, but not sure after that. My psych apt is midday.

I miss the chance to talk to you @Faith-and-Hope, while I confine myself mainly to this thread. I continue to follow your posts however, and was happy to read that you are ticking off your long list of uni assignments. Go you! Sounds like Nelly has become part of the furniture now at your place, which is lovely. I had a chance to have a good talk with Quinn a couple of days ago. I dont see him as much now that winter is here. I dont know where he is now spending his time. Sending you my love and admiration Faith.

Good night all, I will talk again when I can.
