Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

I'll be okay. Just fed up with persistent lapses into SI, feelings of hopelessness and the knowledge that I'll never be accepted.

I am sorry indeed to hear this. It sounds a heartbreaking place to be. 😞

And please dont doubt your ability and value here as a Guide. I sense that you lack confidence in yourself .. but you shouldn't. Just be yourself ... because that's beautiful, and thats enough.

Thank you so much for your kind words @Former-Member . I will have to ponder the "lack of confidence" question some more...I didn't use to lack confidence, but since this year maybe I do now. I definitely was lacking it yesterday, so thank you for your encouragement, I really appreciate it. ❤

Re: Darkness

My love just thought I would check in. I most likely won't be on here again for a while if at all tonight. I have had a hell of a day, that seems quite an understatement really. I am sorry I can't support you or @outlander or @NatureLover or any of our friends right now, I just don't have anything left for anyone else. Love you 3000 to infinity and beyond Always @Lee82

.............................................

@Former-Member ... thank you so much for your early morning visit. I had a few hours sleep, which is not bad for me. I too wish you a peaceful day, and one which is far better than yesterday. 🌺

I also read a post you posted to your Darkness thread, as above. I am so sorry that yesterday was such a bad day .. understatement! Please do not concern yourself that you are not able to support others during such a time. The important thing is that you take the best care of yourselves that you're able. For me, when I'm feeling really low, I find it very helpful to be here trying to support others and maintaining connections. It helps to distract me and take my mind off my own silly issues. But at the same time, I also know I'm more liable to 'stuff up' during those times, and thus probably should not be here. So for me its a difficult dynamic to try to manage.😔

Getting back to your reply to me yesterday .. saying that you dont mind me bringing my special butterfly over from your thread to mine ... thank you. And I'm really touched that it brought a smile to little Kimmy's face on a day which was plainly so difficult. So I'm really glad about that. 😊

I'm also sorry Kimmy missed my sheep hug from the other day. Its a few pages back now ... so I will repost it here for her to see. I hope she enjoys a nice woolly hug.

Sending lots of love and best wishes for a better day.

Sherry 🌸🤗💕

Helo my Sherry I am going to ak Seannie if he wil give me a shep. I wan one to hugs 💖Kimmy

Sherry, thank you for that lovely reply. I wish something would change for the unconnected 16 yr old. The sh and si is so out of hand that we have Sean to call the gp this morning in regards to hospitalisation, I just can't do this much longer. Mentally we have never ever been in such a state before.

I know what you mean by not being here when things are too tough. We have gotten Izzy into trouble because we haven't thought about what we have posted while in a mess.

How are beautiful lady? @Former-Member

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Oh @Former-Member .. that all sounds so dreadfully hard for all of you. Your teen alter sounds totally out of control right now. Perhaps hospitalisation would be best ... you being in the worst mental state you've ever been in, is not a great place to be obviously. Its possible that things need to come to a peak, before everything can then settle. And if thats going to happen, its really important that it does so in a hospital setting. Sean cannot be with you 24/7, no matter how hard he tries. I am really concerned for your welfare Izzy. I'm really sorry everything is so difficult for you all. I know poor Nikky is also finding it a huge strain in her protector role. Sigh ... how I wish life was simple and carefree.

How am I? I'm not sure. I feel bad, I feel I may not be here for long. I dont know ... I'm all over the place.

I will be seeing my clinical psych tomorrow .. a couple of weeks earlier than I had thought. But I have been emailing her this past week, and she is coming back a little earlier than originally planned. So she wanted to see me sooner than we had planned. I think this is a good thing, because things are getting out of hand for me. I find myself plummeting.

@outlander ... how are you Li'l One? I hope you managed to get your pain under enough control to enable some sleep overnight. How are your sh and si thoughts today? Stay safe Little One. I care.

Sherry 🌸

Hi @Former-Member 🤗🌺

Glad you got through yesterday without complications. How did the roast dinner turn out? What is your fav roast? I used to prefer Lamb, but probably Pork now. With a yummy crackle.

Your pictures from FB are always stunningly beautiful. I have trouble getting pics from FB to accept here.

Talk later.

Sherry 💕

Really sorry to hear, @Former-Member .

I'm worried when you say you feel you may not be here for long. And also that things are getting "out of hand". They both sound very serious. 😞

Hoping that you have a good and helpful session with your psychologist tomorrow...

Please stay safe, Sherry.

Hi @Former-Member

The roast was extra yummy. Roast pork, lots of veggies.
I'd better get moving. Lots to do.
I hope your day goes well.
Take care of yourself and rest when you can.
