Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Dear @Former-Member ,

i really regret making that post now as I did not really express myself very well. I shall be more careful about what I share about myself.

Thanks @Former-Member You are so kind. I'm feeling very overwhelmed, but took prn to calm down. The wait for operation could be 2 weeks. That's why I'm concerned about showering etc etc etc. But I guess I should try sleep now. Take care and sleep well.
Thankyou so much for your lovely message @outlander I can't think right now. Hopefully catch up soon with both of you.

Big hugs to you both and night night. 💖💖🥰🥰

You are such a beautifully sweet person Sherry, thank you for your kind words and tagging Izzy in your post when you returned to the fourms. I was getting quite concerned about your absence. I am happy to hear you are feeling better. We all have grown very fond of you as well and I missed you more than I expected to while you where gone. I know I have thanked you before for being so sweet with Kimmy, but I have to say it again because only Sean irl is as accepting as you and others here of Izzy's alters. Kimmy has a picture she wants to share with you and Lee later so I hope it's works for her. I am so glad you like her butterfly she worked so hard to get it pretty for her friend Sherry. 💖

Unfortunately Izzy was around for maybe 24 hrs then disappeared again, it was like she was testing the waters and didn't cope at all. I didn't cope very well yesterday as we got triggered earlier in the morning and nothing in the toolboxes really worked to calm the mind or body and the triggers just kept coming. Unfortunately the thing the completely made me come undone was her Chiro appointment, I really didn't think I could cope but my neck was out and causing issues so it had to been done but was a disaster and that was at 11 am!!

I am hoping for a better day today as we have a paint pouring date with our neighbour. I hope today is gentle with you my beautiful friend. Talk to you really soon I hope. 💜Nikki

@NatureLover ... I love hugs. And congrats on the Guide upgrade yesterday.

Thank you 🙂 Sending you a warm hug. I hope it's OK for me to visit you on your thread here and follow along quietly...I won't be intrusive.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Of course it is @NatureLover ... I would love for you to be able to do that. 🌸😊

Anyone and everyone is welcome here ... I definitely do not find any visitor intrusive.

And the warm hug is much appreciated. 🤗💕 Actually @NatureLover we share OCD as part of our diagnoses and issues, so we can perhaps support each other around that.

That would be great, @Former-Member , I would really appreciate that.

What form does your OCD take?

Thank you for being welcoming to your thread. I appreciate it also as my thread is lonely now.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Good morning to you @Peri ... its a very dark and wet morning here today. Lots of quite heavy rain coming through. I think its meant to pretty much clear by lunchtime, but for now its very dark and dreary.

Peri ... I'm sorry you are regretting posting what you did yesterday, and that you dont feel you expressed what you wanted to convey. I understand why its often difficult sharing things about ourselves.

I'm just wondering though @Peri ... are you aware that you have the ability to edit or remove part or all of any posts you make? If it bothers you ... you can edit them. Many people do this. I often edit posts when I make typo errors for example, because it annoys me when I make mistakes.

If you are not aware how to edit ... its really very easy. Go to the post that you wish to edit. At the top of your posting square you will notice a little rectangle saying "post options" together with a little drop down arrow. If you hold your curser on that box it brings up some options for you. Those options include ... edit post and delete post. Select whichever you wish you do, and it will take you back to your original post. Just go in and remove or edit any portion of your post. Once you're happy, just click the post button again, and your post will go live again in its amended form.

I hope this is helpful for you. And also, if you would like me to remove any reference to you in my subsequent post, please let me know. I am happy to do so.

I hope you have a nice Sunday @Peri ... I'll be thinking of you. 😊💕

@Former-Member 🌸🌼😊🙏

Yes it all sounds like a very overwhelming situation you find yourself in. Two weeks for the operation on a broken leg sounds pretty extreme. Do you know if thats because of a backlog in the hospital and operating system, or because they need to wait for swelling/inflamation to reduce. I know sometimes they dont like to operate while swelling is very bad after accidents etc. But yes ... I see your point about needing for him to shower over the coming 2 weeks. @outlander made a very good suggestion ... perhaps a visiting nurse can come to your home to help with showering and any other needs your hubby may have. That could include attending to dressings etc if applicable. Is his GP able to recommend anything, or the A&E who treated him at the hospital? Its surprising they did not give you some assistance with any of this.

I hope the prn helped you to calm down enough to get some decent sleep last night @Former-Member

I will be around during the day if you wish to talk about anything more. Happy to help if I can, although I know its in a very limited capacity.

A big good morning hug to you too ... and I hope today is calmer and more organised for you than last night was.

Sherry 💕

Hi Nikki ... thank you so much for your kindness. You are pretty special you know. As Izzy's protector you have placed an enormous responsibility on your shoulders. And I worry about you, perhaps equally as much as I worry about Izzy. Izzy can hand over to you, but who helps you out?

That sounds really difficult Nikki for both you and Izzy with being triggered at the chiro appointment. I guess sometimes, every tool in our toolbox fails us. But we just have to keep adding new tools as we need and discover them I suppose. I like to think that we live and we learn.

How is your neck now, after the chiro adjustment? I hope it has had a beneficial effect, because having a neck out can definitely cause lots of associated issues. I do recall that you have major problems with 'touch', so I can understand how you would be triggered by the chiro treatment. I hope you are feeling a lot better today.

@Former-Member💕⭐🌸🌼🦋

The picture you mentioned that Kimmy wanted to share, is it the one of your new sheep, which you posted not long after your other post? It took a while come through, but I can see it now.

Thank you Kimmy, that is a beautiful photo. I love your new sheep. Phil looks warm, soft and cuddly. It appears that EllaTeddy and dolly (I am so sorry I have forgotten dollys name, so you will need to remind me) are riding Phil the Sheep. How sweet. I would suggest that perhaps you could get a pony next time Seannie is feeling generous. But perhaps a pony would be too big, and you may not have enough space for a toy pony. Can I give you a big hug sweetie? I love hugs and hope you do too. Maybe a wooly sheep hug?

Perhaps by now, you will be on your paint pouring date with your neighbour. I really hope today is a much better day for you all, and that your painting date goes really well. I would love to see any resulting paintworks if you'd like to share. On your darkness thread is fine, I will catch it there if you think to tag me into it. I just cannot respond there.

Thinking of you today, and I hope to talk again real soon.

Sherry 🌸
