Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Just heard about the tragedy in Victoria and thought you might be having a really difficult time with the news also with your past tragedy in your family. I don't expect any response but wanted you to know I am very much thinking of you at this time @Former-Member

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Thanks so much @Zoe7 for thinking of me. I would not blame you at all, for not doing so you know. 😕

Yes when hearing of the road accident in Melbourne last night which resulted in 4 fatalities .. It certainly brought back many awful memories.

Like when young Emma died, it appears to be a freak accident. Adding to the hurt is that Emma would be turning 16yo next week had she still been alive.

And like you, I too thought of @BlueBay who has a son in the VIC police force. I pray all is okay with you BlueBay.

@Zoe7 I have been thinking of you a lot too you know. How could I not? You are important to me. I started posting again this morning. But I have not been tagging you in posts, because I did not want to remind you of me. Giving you space if you like. Nor have I been supporting your posts, as I read that you and @Owlunar do not like that.

Please do not take any of this as a sign that I am deliberately excluding or ignoring you. I do this only out of respect for your wishes. Just let me know if your wishes change.

Again @Zoe7 I thank you for taking the time to post to me, for caring enough to do so. Yes it is hard, I have had a sick feeling in the stomach about it all day. Coming on top of a few other things happening, I'm suffering a great deal.

I'm impressed with how youve been going with your home painting. Well done.

Everyone else .. Thank you all very much for your many posts. It warms my otherwise cold heart. I will respond to you all soon. Maybe tomorrow.

Of courser I though about you with the news @Former-Member I know how incredibly hard that would have been for you and your brother to hear about - and the fact it would have been Emma's birthday next week would be making it even harder. So sorry Hon

The best day of my holidays was the day I saw you back - you belong here, need the support and were very much missed - by everyone including me. I begged you to stay before because I did not want you to leave - so I am sooooo happy you are back.

Yes it does annoy me when some just support posts but it wasn't all about you as I knew you weren't posting anywhere yet - it is more about when we put a lot of effort into posting/replying to someone and they don't reply - I know there is no requirement to do so but it makes me feel that I just should not bother ...you always reply when you are up to it and sometimes it takes you that time to get your head around things.

As for tagging - that is up to you but never think I do not want to be reminded of you because you are, and always will be, important to me. Shite happens and we move on because that is what friends do 💕 Biut that has to be in your time Hon.

...and you do not have a cold heart - quite the opposite - you have one of the warmest hearts of anyone I know 💖

Hi @Former-Member

I'm really glad to see you posting again

And I appreciate your comments to come other people here about the tragedy where 4 police officers were killed - many members of my family have been or are members of the police force and it always slams home when such things happen - and so unnecessary too - an accident that should not have happened

And Emma would be 16 next week - that accident would have been a bitter blow too - stupidity on the roads we all have to use. And my son was 16 when he died - sixteen is such a young age - childhood has passed and adulthood has yet to come - I'm so sorry

I think many people are edgy at this time and why not? It's a very bleak and difficult time for everyone and you have the added trauma of a past event that only has its date every four years - so of course we can be touchy - it's normal - it's true that I mentioned to @Zoe7 that supports are fine but when there are no posts I feel edgy - and it was not all about you. I also don't like it but know it's unavoidable but okay that there people who never post reading the forums. It must work for them and if it helps - why not? I thought about it and I think I like it best when people contribute their thoughts. This is a place to share and I am very glad you have returned and have started to share again

I missed you - I don't spread myself around the forum very much - really keeping to a few people most of the time - other people share more of themselves - but the people I am in touch with become part of my life - and you are

So I am glad you are back - really glad -
