Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

MiOh @Former-Member, you're not horrible, or any of the other horrible things depression is saying over you... causing self doubt etc.

Its a difficult balance swinging from doing ok to finding we've come apart at the seems.
I never thought of myself swinging from different diagnosis states before, but it sure makes sense. Even down to the appetite changes... 😞 I too have shamefully overeaten on tubs of icecream twice this week 🤭 (I never do this), but also salty biscuits... which is self harm with my BP of late. Don't know why I can't control it, just gonna have to go back to not buying it anymore. But I feel quietly relieved hearing someone else experiences this too.

Stay thin if you can, I'm not and my lower frame is painfully disintegrating (adding to life stressors).

Speaking of stress...
You've had a lot of stress lately. Stress triggers default behaviours or regression. I think too, with passed trauma weve become experts at pushing down our feelings, deep deep down, where we forget it's there, and keep adding to it rather than processing. We had to learn this to survive. It's a natural process for most (fight flight I guess) but intended to be short term, to evade danger, not ongoing indefinitely forever... You've had high stressors with the loss of your mum, and all that entails, on top of existing home stressors... Of cause the pressure cooker is starting to spurt out in all directions... 😯

But you know what (and I'm no expert, just lived it my own way), the fact that you're so aware, have insight, have noticed the regressive habits coming in, and now you're talking about it

😁👍... It mightn't feel like it, but you've already stepped into your healing phase 💗 You're clever, and balanced and will be ok, I'm sure of it.

Thingis... don't beat yourself up! take it slow and create some joy moments in each day... just for you.
I really appreciate your post, the detail, it helps me not feel alone. Thank you for sharing. It also gives me the opportunity to dig deep within to offer what I have learned in my own journey, to help you (I hope), but, the amazing spinoff is - it reminds me of what I've overcome before, that I can donit, and how to. I so quickly forget, so... Thank you💐
Of cause we each have to find our own way, no two people are the same, but i like this think there's an overlap there somewhere 🙏
Hang in there Sherry... lots of self care to rebuild your soul. You're 'PRECIOUS' you know 💗

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@Former-Member Hey Sherry dont worry about going to the dentist too quickly if you dont want to. A similar thing happened to my ex and they kept repairing it and it kept coming off :o. Now he just puts up with the slightly crooked teeth (which I have always preferred to perfect teeth in any case :)). As long as there is no pain that is the main thing.

Oh when you next go to the dentist ask about the special teeth guards. They are made especially to stop teeth clenching and grinding. Costly but effective. No urgency though :).

Also try not to worry about your eating. You have been through so much lately. Just be gentle on yourself. You might want to bring it up with your doc next time you see him/her.

You are such a good woman Sherry. You have been there for the pea when I was feeling fragile. If you want to talk I am here particularly in the midnight hours as you know :). Take care. Love peaxxx

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi @Former-Member

Thanks for trusting us so much you have been able to open up and start talking about the things that are bothering you - it is hard to do that and so important - I hope you can find someone to help you professionally -

I can't comment on Eating Disorders or OCD really - except to say that are undermining and exhausting - but tooth grinding - I am a champion at that one - I have lost teeth from grinding them - and I think if you have a kind and supportive dentist this would be a good person to talk to about that - I do have such a dentist -

Yes - stress and tooth-grinding - it's one way nature helps us to release tension - there are things in your life you just have to live with and do your best - you have a lot on your plate with your husband and your mother - whew - yes - tooth-grinding would be way up there on the list -

And I can only sympathize - understand - know what it's like - even though I have lived through so much rough stuff having new stuff comes up in my life - as it does with everyone and we can really be in the habit of doing something in our sleep and how can we control that? I don't know - if I did I would stop grinding mine abd certainly tell you how I did it

One thing I can suggest is that you see a dentist and get a plastic bite-plate to wear at night. Yes - I know that's not cheap and I had one a long time ago - I would often wake up with it in my hand - or worse - somewhere else in the bed - and I was married and sharing my bed then and my husband would be lying on it - aw - no 0_|_]]

That's not much to offer but I do hear you - all the best - you are a fine person - always so careful with people's feelings and work hard -

Sending my best wishes and wish I could say something really helpful

@Maggie I'm having that cup of tea with you now, as I look at a clear sky full of stars. Lovely it is. We are meant to get some very warm weather later in the week, likely over 30C by Friday. Thats too hot soo soon as far as I'm concerned.

@Faith-and-Hope The flowers are beautiful ... thank you. But unfortunately what you say about (allowing) others to like me .. that cannot be ... there is really nothing to like about me. Not one thing! I dont think I even deserve to be liked.

@Zoe7 I know tonight is not easy for you after a difficult after school session re FV. You did well getting through all that. So thank you for still taking time to reply to me earlier tonight. Much appreciated. Yeah ... my methods of self soothing .. definitely not ideal. You can add drinking to the list .. another baddie. And stupid me, I know better. Yes I do know my general patterns, but still dont seem able to stop them. I see my psych on Thursday morning. Some of this stuff, I'm not sure I can talk to her about, although I know I should. When I took hubby to his GP appointment last Thursday, I was in the waiting room and saw my own GP there. Hubby and I see different Drs at the same practice. Anyway he must have just come back from a break, as he called me into his office for a quick chat. He just asked if I was okay, and reminded me I could come and see him any time. I'm not sure why he did that, and it rattled me a bit. Mostly when I see him, while waiting with or for hubby, he just says hello in passing.

@Gazza75 A hard time, yes I suppose so. But life has been incredibly hard for me over the last 2 years. With one thing or another. Everything just keeps building up it seems. And then just as it seems I'm finally starting to get things under control again, it only takes the smallest thing to completely bring me undone again. Sorry to hear you were sick on Sunday. I hope you are fully recovered now?

@Molliex You seem to be finding your way around the forums very well. Thank you so much ... firstly for visiting here, and secondly for your kind and thoughtful words. The calming vibes are appreciated too.

@BlueBay So proud of you lately my friend. And so happy knowing you finally have a very caring and proficient support crew around you at last. That will make all the difference to your recovery. It may seem inconsequential, but a dietician and an exercise physiologist working in your overall team sounds like a great improvement. Well done. Thank you for your kind thoughts and hugs. They are much appreciated right now. And yes ... I always enjoy reading and responding to your posts too.

@Shaz51 Ohhh I do so love meerkat group hugs. I dont feel strong though Shaz. In fact, I feel very broken. Perhaps irretrievably so. I know I'm never going to be normal, I know I'll always struggle just to survive. And knowing that seems like a life sentence to me right now. I feel angry and resentful. To whom? Mainly the man who assaulted me all those years ago. I cannot forgive him for what he did to me, what he took from me. Hubby quizzed me a couple of nights ago about it .. again. I dont want to talk about it. It still hurts, and I dont think he understands that. It brings up too many memories, fears and pain. No ... I'm not strong at all Shaz ... I'm weak. Hubby as much told me so the other day. He said "how could you allow him to do that?" Why doesnt he understand that I didnt 'allow him'? He attacked me, I was injured, stunned, could not fight any more. He doesnt understand. I think he blames me. Now ... I dont understand.

@Former-Member You are so kind .. thank you. I really dont deserve all this apparent understanding. But I am happy indeed that I may, in some roundabout sort of way, helped someone else to know they arent alone. It did help me knowing that you too pig out on things like a full tub of icecream. I dont tend to go for salty stuff, mainly sweet. But you're right .. if you have high BP, then the salt is definitely harmful. Yes its hard having lost Mum so recently. The past few days have been difficult in that respect too. So many times I absent mindedly remind myself that I havent called mum yet today. I had been calling her at least once every day while she was so sick. And even when she was well in previous years, I still rang and spoke to her most days. So I've been thinking I have to call mum, only then remembering that she died. And thats even after talking to my Dad every day, which I've been doing ... makes no difference. I miss my Mum. I should have done more, I wish I had been able to spend more time with her before she died. I feel guilty for not having been able to be there. Thats hard. Dad's not doing well either. It was the anniversary of my little niece's death less than a fortnight ago. My brother has been suffering more again too. Likely now that all the immediate stress of Mums death and funeral arrangements etc is all over, he is falling into a bit of a heap too. The loss of his little daughter in a car accident was 4 years ago now. And then he lost his baby daughter back in April this year. Its been really tough for him and his wife. I've been fielding some extra phone calls from him lately, and I'm finding that difficult to cope with right now. I need to be strong, but I'm falling apart. Hubby too has been worse again this past week. Looking forward to seeing his psychiatrist, neurologist and endocrinologist over the next few weeks. Hoping to iron out a few issues and get him back on track. I dont like that the auto immune encephalitis seems to be festering again. Yes EOR, I will try to hang in for now ... too many people need me right now. Self care ... thats a tough one. I will try. Thank you for being so understanding.

My dear Pea @Bunniekins ... Yes I will bring up some of these issues with my psych whom I have an appointment with on Thursday. I am overdue to see my GP. I need a skin cancer check as I have a couple of spots I need looked at. One when I had the BCC removed from under my eye last year they said was also another BCC and to not leave it. If its like the last one, its one of the infiltrating type, which do spread. But that was at a different skin cancer clinic. This time I will get my regular GP to check, or else refer me to a dermatologist. See what he thinks. Oh goodness, my teeth are far from perfect Greenpea. The top teeth are pretty good, but my bottom teeth are very crowded and a little crooked. But you make a good point .. so next time I go to the dentist (not due for another year) I will talk about one of the tooth guard thingys. Could be a good investment, and thus worth the initial outlay. Yes Pea, I know you're around most nights, in the wee small hours. I often check in and read, but dont always get involved. But it is a better distraction than clock watching and making number patterns out of digital clock numbers! Thank you my friend ... love ya.

@Owlunar You're right, it was hard to write that post. I am actually deeply ashamed at some of these so-called coping mechanisms I resort to. As I just mentioned to Greenpea, I wil definitely talk to my dentist when I see her next, about getting a bite plate thing. Could be worth doing. I guess this anxiety thing will be with me for life. Good to hear that you had a good flight and arrived safely at your destination. I like Downton Abbey btw ... always watched it when it was on TV. Your room overlooking the Coral sea sounds delightful. Enjoy your time there. And .... you have said something helpful ... and I very much appreciate it. Thank you.

Okay getting through all that has got me exhausted. Maybe a good thing. Will soon find out. Good night everyone.

Sherry 💕💤

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

💐💜💕 @Former-Member .... hearing you and others here who are speaking up.

👋 Have done the whole tub of ice cream on occasion, and whole packet of salty stuff .... it’s a classic coping mechanism, and I own it as legit. Salt helps with stress, and if we are burning adrenaline, we will be seeking high sugar foods as high-octane fuel ..... so I take a moment to recognise the big picture .... what is it I am actually needing, and are there other okay-ish options that I can add in to help get through that moment ? It’s Coping Box time. Maybe a heat-pack or hot water bottle, music, turn on a movie if that will work in the moment, pick up a hand-craft project .... layer up the self-soothing stuff ....

One thing I do now is buy the mini versions of things, so I am going through smaller packets and tubs. It can help you identify when you have reached an “enough” point, especially when it’s part of a set of self-soothing choices. You have turned it from something that was feeling out-of-control into a set of choices, and you can choose to open the next mini-packet or small tub .... or change the music track .... or turn off the movie and put on something else .... reheat the heat-pack or not ..... and push the guilt about it aside.

Get a bit more active the next day, if you can, by taking a walk or vacuuming or whatever.

If you think it’s much more than an occasional self-care episode, maybe mention to your doctor / psych / pdoc that you need some support around it ?

Something else I have learned to do is include done of the sweet and salty foods in my regular eating days, which helps to get past them as something forbidden or not-okay. At the end of the day they are just another food, which is providing an element of support.

I hope this helps. Most of you know that we have problems with eating disorders in the house, and wider family environment. That doesn’t make me any sort of expert, but in ed’s guilt becomes some of the driver behind it. Recognising how it works can help you disempower it, maybe (probably) with support. It’s all about emotional pain management, and you have a huge amount of that to deal with.

I would really like to take your hubby by the ear give him a “talking to” with mustard on it .... as I am sure you would like to with mine .....

Big hugs ❣️ Big loves ❣️ Big courage Hon ❣️ Just you keep swimmin’ .... 🐠🐠🐠 .... grief takes time to get through, and it tends to snowball everything else.

why I am saying this is bcause my mr shaz will say " that I am too senative and letting my faher`s abused interferr with my mind now

but they don`t know how hard it is too get it out of your head

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

It seems like your gp was being really caring and was concerned for you @Former-Member - as we all are here Hon I understand that knowing of our patterns but also not being able to stop them - it is incredibly hard when you are feeling so low to even consider what is best for us. I am glad you are seeing your psych this week - you have so much going on and need that outlet to talk and work through things. I also know it is hard to open up when you feel yourself shutting down - that is often the hardest time to talk but the time you need to the most ...very much a difficult position to be in. Sitting with you Hon
