Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

I was raped a little over 20 years ago now. It was by someone I knew and trusted and it occurred in my own home. I was physically injured, concussed, ashamed, afraid, embarrassed - all the usual things.

I never reported it to the authorities and never spoke to anyone about it. I had never been a particularly social person, but afterwards I isolated myself completely other than heading off to work dutifully each day.

After 18 years of almost constant battles with anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, triggers, etc, I finally sought help from a psychologist. Initially it was for pain management as I suffered a severe back injury about 2 years after the rape. So after almost 2 years of occasional appointments I finally told her during a particularly difficult time (anniversary) what had happened all those years ago.

So early last year I was officially diagnosed with PTSD. On my clinical psychologists advice I have undergone a series of Exposure Therapy and CBT last year. It was a long, arduous and extremely difficult process. However, it did help to some degree.

However the nightmares, anxiety symptoms, etc continued. This was probably made worse as last year was an extremely difficult one for me all round. My little 11yo niece was killed in a car accident, my brother seriously and permanently injured, I was retrenched from my job when the business was sold, and I found out that my husband was cheating on me again. So I guess none of that helped.

And then on 29th February this year it was the 20th anniversary of my trauma. It seemed to hit me even harder than usual, I dont know why. There just seemed to be triggering events around every corner, it was awful. I struggled very badly.

My psychologist decided to try EMDR treatment once things settled down a bit. She felt it would help with the emotional content of my traumatic memories. So between April and early September this year, I have undergone 10 2xhour EMDR sessions. I am now on a break to see how things are now.

But in the meantime she wants me to talk to people about what happened, as it is an important part of the recovery process she says. However I find this really hard as I do not have any friends (my hubby is a narsissist according to my psychologist). I have become very isolated other than for my part-time work which I was lucky enough to find in January. I do some volunteer work in the aged care industry, which I enjoy. But I just do not have any friends I am able to talk to. My family live a long way away, and I could never tell them anyway.

Although I am still unable to verbally speak about the rape, I can now write about it, and even think about it to some extent, without bringing on a panic attack. So that's progress. I hope that by discussing it further and by learning how other people cope with their PTSD symptoms, I can further desensitise myself from my traumatic memories.

Hence my decision to try an online forum. I look forward to responses from other people who have had similar experiences to myself. I am definitely more of a listener than a talker, so I hope that I may be able to be of assistance to others here as well.

Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

Hi everyone. I havent updated this thread in a while, so it probably appropriate that I do now.

Thanks to @Zoe7 @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51 @outlander @BlueBay @Former-Member @Appleblossom @Maggie @Owlunar @Peri @Starta @Sophia1 for your messages and 'supports'.

I've really had a difficult time this past week, it's been tough, to say the least. I've tried distraction, keeping busy, tried ignoring or forgetting. But it's all still there and is weighing heavily on me. I'm not sleeping and I feel almost like a zomby day in and day out. Just getting through. Upon reflection I believe there are 2 prominent reasons for my current struggles. I know this is a long post and I hope you can bare with me as I get this out. Its a difficult situation and I am conscious of not saying anything wrong.

The first cause of my current distress is that last Monday I got word from the Neurology Dept that hubby would need to go into the City hospital for tests to either rule out or confirm a reoccurrence of autoimmune encephalitis, instigated by cancer treatment last year. I hate the city, its highly triggering for me. I know it shouldnt be, that I should be over this, but it just is. I was assaulted in a city, and I have difficulty removing myself from that. I am on constant high alert in the city. And this isn't even the city where my assault took place. But that seems to have little relevance, all cities are triggering for me. I know I need to push that from my mind, but I am having great difficulty doing so. It's become a permanent fixture in my head this past week, refusing to be ignored. So I am really dreading that call from the hospital to say 'we have a bed available and it's time to bring him down to the city for admission'. Sigh.

The second thing which has triggered me is related to the changes which are currently being instigated here on the forums. In September 2016, as a member on a different forum, something similar occurred during a period of change. Change is never an easy process, and is made even more difficult when the changes are something which I cannot see a valid reason for. Change purely for the sake of change is never warranted, in my opinion. I am not saying that about Sane, but about the other forum I was a member of.

Anyway, getting back to my own personal experience ... out of nowhere and without any consultation or warning to members of impending changes, all threads with over 100 posts were suddenly transferred to a Social Zone section. After the event, managers created a thread to notify members. Through that thread I argued strongly against such action. I had several very legitimate causes of concern. One was that many of the longer term threads were highly inappropriate to consider putting into a 'social' thread. It felt insulting and demeaning for a thread which discussed SI and highly triggering traumatic incidents to suddenly be classified as casual Cafe chat. It made no sense!

The second issue was that it made me, as a long term member, feel that I didn't matter and that managers were trying to hide me in the back blocks. The reason I say that is because by moving threads into the Social Zone, it meant that those threads no longer appeared in the new posts feed. We became invisible. It felt like managers were trying to hide the long term members. It felt like we were being swept under the carpet and that they did not want us around. We became dispensable and unwanted, perhaps an embarrassment to them. It looked better for them that people came, received help, and left again .. completely cured. 🤣 Perhaps it looked better in their statistical analysis each year? As those of us with MIs know ... when it comes to MH ... the majority of us are going to have issues for the rest of our lives. Perhaps not all the time, but definitely from time to time. MH problems don't just disappear courtesy of a bit of well meaning advice and support from an online forum. We actually need ongoing support from people we have connected with and have respect for. Besides that, long term members have such a lot to give back to an online community. Why would you want to hide them or force them out? They are valuable members in any community, MH or anything else for that matter.

Now Zoe I am not saying that my situation is the same as yours is here, but to me there are many similarities. It was a time of change, it resulted in the loss of fellow members I had strong connections with and who had supported me in the 10 months I had been a member there. I lost contact with many others whom I cared a great deal about and whom I had supported for a long time.

To cut a long story short, my views resulted in my account being deactivated on that forum. It happened totally without warning, just an email from the manager saying that my account was deactivated. The excuse he gave was that I had posted an off-topic post to one of the threads. This meant that I was suddenly cut off from the people whom I had grown to consider friends. It was the only support I had and I was bereft. I guess Zoe, it was a little like you losing some of the moderators who have helped you so much in your early days here, such as Rockpool. Suddenly all that was taken away from me and I was completely desolate at the time. I felt very alone, was having suicidal thoughts, I was angry and confused and generally in a really bad way.

These things always seem to happen when we're down, don't they? Yeah well, it was the same for me. I was already in a low place back then, and suddenly found myself in an even worse place. It was at that stage that I found my way here to Sane, where I have again made some close connections, for which I am eternally grateful.

I might add that the other forum did make some changes as per my strong suggestions, but only after I was deactivated. Those long term threads were subsequently removed from the (highly inappropriate) Social Zone thankfully. That would honestly have been a total insult if they had continued with that. What they ended up doing was to introduce a new section for all long term threads to be moved to once they reached 100 plus posts. This included PTSD and Trauma, Suicidal thoughts and self harm threads. Sadly those threads are still essentially hidden from view, in that they do not appear in the new posts feed. You have to actually go hunting to find them. So they persist in treating long term members as second class citizens, which is really sad. I am pleased to say that Sane do not do that, and I hope they never do.

So when I saw what was happening here with your thread Zoe and also several others prior to yours, it brought back some really bad memories of September 2016 for me. Thankfully the changes proposed here have some merit. But the introduction of change needs to be sensitively done and very selective as to which threads are appropriate to be moved. I know this is not an easy task for managers.

Zoe, when you reacted with such disappointment and distress last week, it brought back so many distressing memories for me. And I have been struggling with that ever since. I feel terribly vulnerable and exposed. What if I get removed from here too? What will I have left? I have held off posting this in case I say something wrong, so I have needed to be careful in what I say and how I say it. Please don't let me have said anything wrong! I simply cannot lose my friends again. I'm sorry but I just needed to say this. Call it self-indulgent if you like, but maybe the timing is appropriate. I just hope this Forum is not going down the same path as the other one I used to be a member of. It would be such a shame. This is a great place to be a part of, and I know that with expansion comes inevitable change. But lets not change simply because others have, or purely for the sake of change.

Hi @Former-Member

i am sorry your husband is struggling at the moment. Hugs.

I’m heating you. I had the exact same response from the other forum. The one you were on. I was taken off the forum and not able to go on agsin. I tried a second time months later but the same manager wrote to me to say no I was not able to go back.

I was so upset abandoned rejected and felt invalidated by my posts.

I hear you about what you’re saying.

Pls take care. ❤️

@Zoe7 Hope you’re ok ❤️

Hearing you @Former-Member

Re city and hospital bed. A lot of country people dont like going into the city for very genuine reasons. I hope you find as calm an approach to managing it as possible. Dealing with trauma is extra hard with the speediness and traffic and sheer number of people bustling about.

Re Threads and serious topics not being social. You were very clear. It was good to read your post as I had been preoccupied and not totally with it. I am sure @Zoe7 appreciates you standing up for the issues.

Hugs

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

That’s super hard for you @Former-Member That you might have to go to a city that is very triggering for you. I totally understand what you mean.

I have to avoid certain places/cities.

Some I have overcome, some I don’t want to go to. For me to face the memories of a certain city would be too hard to handle. Especially the city where I come from.

So I understand and feel for you.

Sorry to hear you’re going through so much and that your husband is so unwell.

So much to handle and with not sleeping on top of it, I don’t know how you get through.

You are a very strong, kind, caring person.

I hope that you can find a way to spoil yourself. Eg, a massage or something you enjoy that can help you relax.

Sorry to read what happened to you on the other forum.

Lots of love and hugs to you. 💜💖🌸🌷

Sitting with you @Former-Member ...,

Re: Living with PTSD (Potentially Triggering Material)

@Former-Member On your first point - having to go to the city - I understand your distress at that - it was much the same for me everytime I had to travel along a certain road to get to my pdoc. Having all those memories and having to go back to an area that you are highly emotional about is indeed very triggering. There is also the added pressure of why you are going - to take your hubby to see if he has a recurrence of the autoimmune encephalitis - that is hard enough in itself without the personal triggers. I really hope that hospital visit comes very soon for you both and you can get some answers to why hubby is so sick at the moment. The sooner you can get through this the better. Is your psych back yet? Can you email her with your fears?

On the second point - I can whole heartedly see and hear your fears. Having been deactivated from that previous forum must have been intolerable for you - so I can see why you have the current fears you do. I do believe though that this forum is a very inclusive and well managed forum despite the latest issue. There may be things that come about that we don't always like or agree with but it is also my view that these things can be discussed openly and effectively with both other members and the community managers. That is where the comparison to that other forum shows a much more positive environment on here and I do have confidence that such issues that you previously dealt with and this one we are presently dealing with will be resolved without alienating or excluding anyone.

It is also so important that you recognise that you have done absolutely nothing wrong here and infact I really appreciate your thoughts and position on all this. Yet again you have shown what a wise, knowledgeable, caring and compassionate person you are. Those attributes certainly endear me to you and I have so much admiration for the way you support others here whilst also going through so much yourself. That is indeed evident in the way you have supported me this week whilst having all this in the background for yourself - compassion personaified Hon.

Whilst the events of this week have not been ideal I do believe the forum is much bigger than just one issue and it will eventually be sorted out with all perspectives and opinions taken on board. Sometimes it is simply that mistakes happen and whilst those mistakes have a significant effect on some when they do we also need to recognise that it is nit the end if the world - all things can be worked out in time and with the right consultation. This is one of those things. I am okay and that is very much partly because of your support so now it is time for me (us) to support you. It has been a hard week for both of us - and knowing more about the history that has caused such distress this week in you is actually good for us to know so we can help you through this too.

You will certainly not lose any friends here Hon - you are one of us, family, community and that is important. There is not much more I can say but - given time this too shall pass - and through continued mutual support we will all get to a better place again.

Sending you so much love sweet Sherry and a really big thank you for all your amazing contributions on this forum
