Food and Beverage Choices for Improved Physical and Psychological Health. {Please keep on Topic}.

Hello to members who have been active in “Henry's Landing Strip and Hangar” thread. I have started this thread on healthy food and drink choices and wanted to invite you, and other members, to have a look and participate if the topic and content might interest you.

None of the information, that is posted on the thread, should be considered or applied as if it were medical advice.

I would like the thread to develop with Australian input, information and personal reflections. The following site, though, is one that I have been interested in for a while and thought that it would make a good starting point. Many of the ideas presented by Melissa Norris, who has an engaging and informative style, are easily transferable to the various different environments around Australia. She lives near Seattle on the North-West coast of the USA, just South of Vancouver, Canada. I find that I have to take Melissa in short bursts, because she packs a lot of information into her presentations. She appears to be both genuine and also practical in her application of the principles by which she lives and that she conveys to others. We don't all live in the same type of environments or with the same resources, but I hope that the thread allows us to adopt and adapt ideas, that others have found useful and productive, in and for our own particular situations. We may be able to offer each other our own suggestions, or references to those offered by others, with which we have felt comfortable.

The initial reference, that I am posting, is to the YouTube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZlceOZeryY

entitled: "13 Ingredient Swaps to Make NOW That Saved My Life"

Melissa K Norris: “Yes .…...... I always say, homesteading is a state of mind, and for people who are moving into the homesteading lifestyle and even those of us who have been in it for a while, we all do have pretty much the same goals of being able to raise our own food, to provide clean, good food for our families, to be more self-sufficient in all of the ways that we're able to. And so when we all have that common goal, we actually all come about it differently in a lot of aspects because we're in obviously different geological or geographic locations, we have different climates, there's different acreages, there's suburban, there's apartment homesteaders, there's large rural, all of that. And though we all have this common goal, we've all figured out because we're at different points in our life and all those circumstances that people will come at it at different angles.”

Some of the links to her videos are included here:

I do hope that we can put some interesting material, here in this thread, that will be helpful in our journey, and that of others, toward the ever developing goal of improved health and consequent enjoyment of the lives that we live.

With Best Wishes

Hello @Smc

Thank you very much for the reference to the site and recipe for banana peel cake. That site looks good, since we often are not sure how to effectively use what may otherwise be perfectly nutritious food "ends".

And, also, thanks for the recommendation regarding caution in using banana peel. I believe that grapefruit, apparently, does not go well with some heart medications. Always wise to check food and beverage restrictions when taking medications.

I am very supportive of the inclusion or addition of vegetables in our diets. Unfortunately, I believe, whether by influence of or in conjunction with the general "western diet" our daily food and beverage consumption is over-loaded with meat protein, carbohydrates as well as refined sugars in their various forms.

All of them have a place, but it is the balance that, I believe, needs to be adjusted for many of us. A process through which I am taking myself at the present time.

Hello @Codex1 , @moxi , @Jynx , @Roadrunner

and others reading this thread

It may be worthwhile reading some of the comments on the 10 & 11 January '22, in this thread, in conjunction with the conversation in the last couple of days, on the "My Mosaic" thread. Unfortunately some of the comments, in this "Re: Food and Beverage Choices for Improved Physical... " thread, have been removed by members themselves {not moderators}, meaning that the full picture is no longer available. However, I believe that sufficient material remains, to be evident that members need to offer and allow each other the same opportunities and freedom of expression that they likewise wish for and expect for themselves, subject to compliance with the Guidelines & Info. Notwithstanding the fact that I do not always agree with the way that the Guidelines & Info are interpreted or applied. However, there are opportunities to discuss any such decisions, whether a member may wish to or not.

I have also included, in some of my posts {e.g., 24 Jan, in this thread}, a statement which requests people to make their own decision about whether they wish to view, read or participate in a thread or respond to a comment or post. As said by others, no-one is forced to read or respond to any comment or post, or otherwise participate in any thread.

Similar issues have developed and been discussed in the "Henry's Landing Strip & Hangar " thread.

Ditto @HenryX! Please have a great day and I'm happy to stay around because most of these threads are awesome. Anyway, to keep with the topic of this thread, I'm having cereal and a cup of coffee. I'm having some healthy food for lunch and dinner as I'm getting sick of eating junk food now lol! It's time to make a change for myself. And thank you again for helping me to come to an understanding of some issues @HenryX, mate you have really made my day!

Re: Food and Beverage Choices for Improved Physical and Psychological Health. {Please keep on Topic}.

@Smcand @HenryX I'm allowed to eat an exhaustive long list of veggies (my diet is very very Mediteranian lol), so I will eat just about anything, with a few exceptions. I unfortunately, cannot eat banana peels or grapefruits until I find out if they're safe on my current meds. And as much as I cannot say no to most spicy foods, I have to eat it sparingly. I'm a bit of a rule-breaker with the curried foods though, so I just take it as the moderation rule as usual, but knowing what I'm like if I think I need to skip a meal with chilly or curry, then I do it. Haha it's a nice workaround without be too rebellious!!!😏🤩

Re: Food and Beverage Choices for Improved Physical and Psychological Health. {Please keep on Topic}.

@Jo-anne-Joy I occasionally use probiotic medication. I was told not to over-use it as it can cause health problems as well. Now, I know there's moderation for everything we ingest of course, but I had no idea you couldn't just choose how much probiotic medication you could have. You have to take it at measured amounts as prescribed and not in liberal quantities. @HenryX I'm lucky to have good medical staff who are aware of the brain-gut connection and they allow me to take supliments occasionally and they review my overall health routines around medications and supliments useage so I don't get unwell. Obviously this situation is different for every person so what may work for me may not work or even be detrimental for you. But at least we all can eat most foods without a problem, and for people who have a restricted diet or eat less variety in their diets, there is always options to suit everybody. I guess the motto is, consult the doctor if in doubt! Otherwise, let's all suggest away. Oh cripes, now I have to ask my pharmacist to check if I can eat fruit cake and stuff with orange and lemon peel in it! OOOOOHHH😟☹️ Anyway, I will make a note of this and deal with this concern. I don't want to miss out on some yummy foods!😿 I just have to keep my stress levels down so I can keep eating properly as stress causes some unwanted eating issues for me. Anyway my peeps, I'm off for breakfast!

Hello @Codex1 and @Jo-anneJoy

Thank you @Codex1 , for your reply, including references to healthy eating,😃 and the fact that there are threads which you feel that you can enjoy and engage in with mutual and reciprocal benefit. I have addressed @Jo-anneJoy also to alert her to your comment above.

I am pleased that you have considered the position. Having been here nearly 12 months, it has taken me a lot of that time to decide on where and with whom I wish to correspond. At times I have also questioned whether I have been in the right place, for my own benefit as well as that of others. It is like any community with different personalities and styles. We can enjoy the company of a lot of members, some more than others, some we avoid as much as possible, so as to neither offend nor receive offence.

I put a lot of thought into how I write and how I engage with others. That input I wish to share with people who I think may enjoy, appreciate and extract value from the content. There are times when I have offered ideas and they have been declined. I then have a better idea of where that person is coming from and, in the future engage or otherwise according to that perspective.

In addition to those interactions and through many on the forum, I have gained a great deal over the last year also.

I most sincerely hope that you will find your future activity on the forum interesting, challenging and productive for you and others.

With My Best Wishes

This is the thread to which I referred in response to your thread

"Re: Schizophrenia and Tea/Herbal Drinks"

in which you asked the question,

"I am aware that a lot of Tea and Herbal teas interact with schizophrenia treatments. Has anyone found a Tea that could likely not interact, that's okay for consumption?"

At the top of this message are some forum addresses of other members with whom you may be able to connect and share information between you.

I will add the important observation to which @Rhye referred, in response to your message. that any suggestions about appropriate food or drink combinations, with medications or treatments, should be checked with your professional health advisor, doctor or psychiatrist.

Hi @HenryX ,

My son with schizophrenia drinks his weight in instant coffee, with sugar. He doesn't eat well either. Every now and then he asks me to get him fruit, but he has never been into veges.

He also won't drink water, prefers cordial and juices. Any advice? He doesn't live with me, I do some cooking for him from time to time.

Cheers Libra 🙂
