3 Books that have made an impact

3 Books that have made an impact

Hey there forumites!

As we ease into those long summer days during the holiday period, the online peer support team have been discussing books we’ve been reading that have made a lasting impact. We thought why not share our love of all things books with the community by sharing recommendations for books that have changed you in some way.

We’d love to hear from the community on the books that have moved you, be they self-help, non-fiction, poetry anthologies, the choices are endless, which is why we thought we’d limit it to a central theme – 3 books that moved you – and why (optional).

📚 I’ll kick things off with 3 books that moved me, and why:

  1. One hundred Years of Dirt, by Rick Morton
Within this memoir the author takes us on his journey of survival and ultimately towards regaining his mental health. This book grabbed me right out the gate – Rick Morton (award winning Australian journalist) takes us down his journey of intergenerational trauma and poverty, whilst at the same time celebrates the love of his family. A relatively short read, but one that certainly left its mark.

  2. Miss America By Day: Lessons Learned From Ultimate Betrayals and Unconditional Love, by Marilyn Van Derbur
**Trigger warning** – this is the story of a former Miss America, who through her healing process, overcame 13 years of intrafamilial sexual abuse and took her story to the world to share with others who have walked the same path. It is a very tough read in parts, but it’s ultimately a story of resilience and achievement. Moving, raw and left an indelible mark.

  3. Wherever You Go, There You Are, by Jon Kabat-Zinn
In a particularly dark period, this book was life-saving, and life giving. Within its pages, Kabat-Zinn introduces the reader to the practice of mindfulness and in doing so, shares hope for living in the present moment, with all the highs and lows that may bring. Big tick!

Now over to you – which 3 books have left a mark on you, and if you care to share, we’d love to hear why.

Tagging a few of my fellow online peer support team and community members who might be keen to share their top 3 with the community:

@Former-Member thank you for sharing

Into the Wild was one of those books that did have an amazing film adaptation, says the person who watched the movie but has not read the book Solo journies take a huge amount of bravery, and I'd be curious to hear more about yours, if you cared to share some of the highlights? (looking at your recent nature post and it's giving me a lot of inspiration!)

Brene Brown is somewhat of a legend isn't she – Gifts of Imperfection was a gift to the perfectionistic side of myself too 😊

Re: 3 Books that have made an impact

Probably unrecognisable if there is such a thing @Former-Member
1 or 2 of the stories in there didnt do anything for me , but with the Ghost on the Rail I could picture myself there, as I could a lot with Robbery under Arms ok separate novel. Just total immersion. To me thats good writing.
I dont really read anymore except for newspapers

another good one is For the Term of His Natural Life, but main theme can be grisly and overwhelming, ie convict prisons, a thing that is somehow forgotten ie the way they were treated @Former-Member

Re: 3 Books that have made an impact

It sounds like a ripper of a book @TAB

One thing that struck me when I read you like to look at maps of country NSW is that our sense of place in modern Australia is quite city centric for so many these days. In days gone by it was common place to roam through the country whereas these days, with all our mod cons, so many stick to coastal borders and cities. This does seem to be changing with a new breed of "van lifers", but that connection to country towns has certainly changed. Anyway, enough of my ranting, thank you for sharing!

Re: 3 Books that have made an impact

from another nameless book of little note read once , there is a 'Long paddock' from queensland to nsw ie old stock route , think can still ride it. Was just thinking aloud as thinking in 1800s people rode horses everywhere lol @Former-Member

How amazing is that @TAB! I wonder if they are still used today? I find myself semi regularly watching Landline on ABC and it would be great to see a story like this on that program.

Re: 3 Books that have made an impact

probably might still be used if people are struggling and cant afford road transport costs for stock, like the people in the book I read were @Former-Member

It probably has been on landline, or that other show on ABC where that women appears in country places;well somewhere over the years, I dont watch them that often
