Setting boundaries with an elderly narcissistic mother for Christmas who also needs more care
Evening all,
I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who has experience setting boundaries for Christmas with a narcissistic mother who lives at home (not with me) and needs more care but is more intent on complaining rather than getting the relevant assessments. She's conveniently decided to bring up needing more care in the week before Christmas although she's been deteriorating for months. I'm feeling stressed about setting boundaries for spending time with her at Christmas. I've told her I'll spend one night with another relative and then her. Even this is pushing it for me ie I'll need to take extra medication to do this. I've told her this twice. First time, no real reaction. The second time I was told how unwell she was and that I should stay with the other relative for two nights. My psychiatrist has told me to stick to my one night plan or if she argues, tell her I'll stay in Melbourne. (She's in the country). I agree with his advice but will still find it difficult to carry it out in practice this week.
Also, I find out tomorrow whether a hip xray she had last week means hospital or not (and part of me hopes yes and she has to either stay or go into respite for Christmas) and I feel a bit guilty about feeling like this.
