Living with Loneliness

Living with Loneliness

Feelings of loneliness occur when there is a mismatch between the amount of meaningful social connection we want and the amount we have. So while loneliness can be caused by isolation, it can also be felt when surrounded by people, and in friendships, family and intimate relationships. It is a personal feeling of social isolation

Loneliness can be really hard to manage and studies have shown it can lead to poorer physical and mental health. Physically, loneliness can cause low energy, poorer sleep, headaches, worse experience of physical pain and addiction. Mental health wise, it can cause anxiety, depression, poorer self esteem and thoughts of suicide. Often this can even lead to further isolation and feelings of loneliness for each person.

In Australia, 1 in 3 people report feeling lonely and socially isolated. This means that there is a chance many of us here on the forums experience loneliness, especially given that many of us have or care for those with lived experience of complex mental health concerns. It’s important for us to share that experience and find connection and support.

Questions for the community:

  1. What does loneliness look like for you?
  2. How does loneliness feel and how does it impact your wellbeing?
  3. Are the periods of the day or year when loneliness is harder to manage?
  4. What have you done to manage loneliness, do you have tips for others?

Re: Living with Loneliness

Signed up tonight and wanted to share my story.

In the past have suffered mood swings, agitation, intolerance, being angry and aggressive, and feelings of being overwhelmed - can't handle any pressure.

These experiences have affected relationships with family, partners and friends and has led to depression and loneliness.

Have been a diabetic for over 30 years and also have brain atrophy and both these conditions can contribute to moods and feelings. I can't do much about the atrophy but acceptance of the condition has been huge and improved my focus/attitude towards people and the world. Fortunately l have a couple of very good friends and family who have been supportive and loyal. I have avoided having a partner for many years as l haven't been a nice person and wouldn't want anyone else to experience the angry me. I miss having someone in my life though. Life can be tuff sometimes. If anyone can relate or has advise please add comments.

Cheers

FickleFred

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hi FickleFred just a brief hello and welcome- Im one of the Moderators here. Im struck by your insight, and honesty around how your moods have affected relationships- not to mention the rollercoaster I can imagine that must have internally. Acceptance can be a real journey to get to- I can see how shifting into that space- has really helped. Glad to hear you have some supports around ya, and I hope you find this community to be a supportive and safe space that I know it can be 🙂

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hi @FickleFred, just read your post from april, and wanted to say hi. I can relate to past mood swings, agitation, intolerance, overwhelm, angry outbursts, low stress threshold reining relationships. I've become a recluse, it's just easier to HIDE away from people, but trouble is, its incredibly lonely in the shame cave. Well, that's my experience anyway. Im use to it now, but good to have the forums here I guess. I get lots of dark thoughts this time of year, sad reality realising not one of my friends or family would cope if I talks them in having SI (having had past parasuicide hospit episodes & all that involves), should try to connect more I guess, but it's not always helpful to. I'm not on the forums much but happy to chat now & then, if you want 🙏

Re: Living with Loneliness

Hi Salvia

Can relate very much.

These problems is such a taboo topic and people avoid us and we avoid them. That is horrible that you have become a recluse. Happy to chat.
